I'm hoping they offer that in a red and gold/cream Famicom color scheme someday. My Famicom has kind of spoiled me on that front.

Edit: Wait it only does HDMI?

That's kind of a bummer. I'd love a system that HDMI, RGB/Component, and S-Video/Composite all in one. I guess you could get converters for that kind of thing.

Under $200 is all he's been willing to say at this point, which kind of makes me expect $199, but I guess no one really knows for sure.

I'd be in if it were analog RGB at that price. NOLA's point about HDMI is kind of a turnoff since I'm #teamCRT and #team240p

Man, I really dig the look of the AVS. I'm pretty happy with my NES and CRT, but if this comes in under 200 I might pick one up just for the option of easily playing on other modern TVs.

  1. Conquest of the Crystal Palace
  2. Clash at Demonhead
  3. Little Mermaid
  4. Punch-Out!!
  5. Wrath of the Black Manta

I'll get a post together and open voting within the next day or two.

If the AVS had composite or component out that would definitely be a plus, but I don't really need that since I have the original NES for my CRT. Mainly I'm just keenly interested in having an HDMI option for my living room and that online leaderboard stuff is a sweet, sweet bonus.

I'm in for $185. I've been waiting years for it.

The controller may not be pretty but it's wireless and you can still use your own controllers. Everything I've seen from it, the video quality surpasses anything we've seen so far including yes, RGB modded consoles.

I know there's the CRT crowd out there and I like it too but equally a fan of pixel perfect clean sprites.

Wrath of the Black Manta? This game has always been a curiosity to me. I loved Ninja games back in the day (who didn't?) but the bar was set fairly high between games like Ninja Gaiden and the Shinobi games, and so forth. I rented Manta when it was new, and thought it was just crap. not fun to play, character looked dumb, graphics looked ugly. Not a "bad" game but just another forgettable me-too effort. I like how the dev actually got sued (I think!) for plagiarizing lots of the images used for cutscenes.

I played it again years later (probably within the last decade at some point) to see if I was missing out somehow and my feelings were reaffirmed. Strangely I have heard people talk positively about this game more often than not. I am not one to rain on other's parades (well, maybe IRL, sure) but I just don't get the love for this game.

Street Fighter 2010 - I remember when this game was new as well. There was a lot of hope-pre-release, that it was somehow gonna be kinda close to at LEAST one of the games it's title was referencing - but alas, no, just a cash-in. But what we dd get, at the time, was definitely interesting. I remember being pretty confounded by it when I first saw the game, did not really like it (the gameplay was quite bizarre) but something about the game was hard to ignore. The music is actually pretty top-tier NES (seriously!) but that's not enough to suck one it. I don't know, I stuck with it and actually got quite far (maybe not quite to the end, I don't remember) but it was one of those games where once you unlocked the "rhythm" of how to play, it was actually quit enjoyable. I'll never say it was a great game, or even "good," but far from crappy or lower-tier for sure. It was a product of it's time, Capcom trying to do something different and actually making an honest effort. I could play this again :)

As for Wrecking Crew, one of the originals that has always slipped through my fingers. Sounds lame, but as a kid I thought the box art looked stupid and the premise seemed dumb as well. I guess I should give it a chance, though, a lot of those OG NES games are usually pretty rad!

Lastly, has Blaster Master ever been up for nomination for the game club here?

Will be interesting to see how it compares to the Analogue NT in terms of video quality.

Actually, I'm not entirely sure it comes with that controller. Might be an optional purchase.

I just watched this documentary last night:

Nintendo_quest_poster.jpg

It's free to stream on Amazon Prime right now. It's about a guy who has to collect the entire North American retail, officially licensed NES library in 30 days without using the internet.

It started off kinda poor/amateurish, and the video game history sections are a bit perfunctory for anyone who knows about the NES, but man, it actually got really good in the end.

I don't want to spoil it. But, I started off hating it, but ended up loving this movie by the end.

I really wished they were more transparent on how much money the guy was paying for each game as well as what his budget was (he needed to use only his own money during this challenge), but otherwise, it felt surprisingly familiar.

It was like watching a retro-GAF collecting thread in movie form. I recommend people watch it for free if they have amazon prime and a few hours to spare one night. It's probably not worth paying to see though.

I love Blaster Master, one of my favorite NES games. Hugely nostalgic game for me, used to play it at a friend's house mostly just wandering around the first area since we didn't know where to go. Great soundtrack too.

Watching that documentary right now, why doesn't he include Flintstones 2 in his "top 20"?

Also wasn't that impressed that he got a big chunk of the games right off the bat from people he already knew, including several hard to find games. It's getting better when he's going to stores and such though.

Wow. I think I'm gonna need one. And at that price point to boot, huh?

RetroUSB does good work. Love love LOVE my Powerpak from them. I play all my Famitracker tunes live on it.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Wrecking Crew is the shit! One of my favorites on the console, for sure. The 'programmable series' was pretty ahead of its time! One of the first games I can recall with a "level editor". And the music is pure Hip Tanaka funk!

I just realized something...I never played Blaster Master.
I've only put in about half an hour on it, I plan to try and complete it some day. I also need to play Strider, those are probably my two biggest blind spots that everyone seems to have played but me.

I'm assuming that since this does Famicom games that anything with an expansion audio chip will play, right?

Yes. Technically it's a "clone" console but it's a hardware clone. It uses a FPGA to pretend to be (I don't want to use the term emulate) NES/Famicom hardware.

The games and accessories don't know any better and in theory should have 100% accuracy. If there ends up being any issues, a firmware update can correct them.

Case in point, he posted a video of Castlevania 3 being played and someone noticed the lighting sounded just a bit off. He replied and said he knew what was wrong and now it's flawless.

Expansion Audio:

The corrected audio is in one of the comments.

Watching it right now. What is the name of the app they mentioned that is a video game database that ranks games by how common they are?

EDIT: Found it, it's called NES Collector. Looks neat, but not for $3.99 neat.
