Mario Land and Epic Yarn stages was considered for Smash 4. Honestly, I don't mind to see Epic Yarn stage however I really like Yoshi Yarn stage so I'm okay with it.
I touched upon this once before, but MOTHER 2 wasn’t delayed because Shigesato Itoi was off digging for buried treasure!
Talk about an intro

I advise everyone not to get too heated up over every little thing they read.

I wholeheartedly support a Mario Land stage if it means glorious corresponding music:

Plus, yes, killer soundtrack. World 1-1, World 2-1 and the credits theme are my favorites.
There's such a candy cotton quality to these tunes, pretty sweet and pleasant to listen to even after all this time.
The Credits' theme in particular I wish would get a remix in a future Mario title.

That column ruled in every way. Highlights:

The randomness of this made me lol

At the start of the project, we had planned a stage from Kirby’s Epic Yarn. However, those plans changed due to the announcement of Yoshi’s Woolly World, and we revamped the stage into the Great Cave Offensive from Kirby: Super Star Ultra.

I'm still sad we didn't get an Epic Yarn stage, but if the trade-off was the amazing TGCO, then I can deal. Maybe next time!

(Actually, I did suspect Smash 4's TGCO was based off of KSSU's aesthetic, as The Tower shares the same white coloring).

Perhaps it’s because so many kids fall into the target age range for the games I make, but people seem to love creating conspiracy theories about me. The truth isn’t that simple, though: I bear no ill will.

Easily the most aggravating subject of any Smash argument (how many times have you heard "ARGH Sakurai hates me and competitive scene!!"?). Argue with facts and logic, not your feelings and/or bias.

A Mario Land stage was planned to be on the 3DS version, but it was replaced by the Game Boy stage.

I wonder what that would've been like? Regardless, we got GB Dream Land, so I'm good.

I always did figure that an Epic Yarn stage would of been redundant with Yoshi's Woolly World.

I wonder why he didn't make a Return to Dreamland stage, however.

Sakurai on point as always

Anyway, looking at the mods on the past couple of pages got me thinking how I really hope people can eventually convert popular fan textures from Brawl to Smash 4. Some of my favorites

oKuSgI5.jpg

Elegant Red Rose Zelda

Anubis Lucario

Friender Lucario

Magic Armor Toon Link (well a lot of the TP Armors being converted for both Links would be great)

Kefka Marth

Just scratching the surface here. I'm also hoping people will be able to figure out how to import whole models like in Brawl. I mostly want to use the Hyrule Warriors versions of the three Zelda characters.

What were some of your guys' favorite Brawl textures?

Ganondorf's model from Brawl haha

But on the side of modding, I quite like Project M's Dry Bowser, even if it would look off in Smash 4. I like PM's Melee costumes for the Zelda and Star Fox crew as well.

Just "Textures"?

Project M's costumes were king. Can't wait to see costumes of the same quality done for Smash 4 as well, especially since we can have over 200 of them and we can give them their own voice clips.

Melee Fox and Falco with Melee voice clips and sound effects LETS GO

I was never into Project M either but those costume mods (and while I'm at it, the Metal Cap cavern stage) were badass.

I only ever dipped into Brawl modding, but the highlight for me was easily one that turned Snake's clothing into a Woody outfit.

Looking at PM's Armored Mewtwo, I just realized how incredible it would look on Smash 4 Mewtwo.

220px-Mewtwo_in_armor.png

The one issue I've always had with the PM alt is that the proportions were kinda off in comparison to above...and well, that's just because Melee/PM Mewtwo's proportions in general were off, lol. Smash 4 Mewtwo's design on the hand is much better looking and accurate to the anime/modern games so his armor would fit a lot more on him here.

I can't find a screenshot, but I always liked using "Joker Snake" I thought it was so cool and clever. Then someone came along and just did a model swap of the Arkham series' Joker, and it just seemed so lazy in comparison.

That and Snake as a Stormtrooper. Yeah it was a model swap, but Snake sneaking around as a stormtrooper was like the MG/SW crossover you didn't know you wanted.

Mewtwo in Melee was based on his game appearances at the time, mostly Stadium. Where he had a freaky huge head, and looked a bit more grotesque.

Smash 4 Mewtwo is based on his FRLG official art, which more closely aligns with his anime art.

I like his Smash 4 design a lot more than Melee. Even as a kid, I thought Melee Mewtwo looked a little off, even if he was one of my favorite characters.

I had a dream where a touhou character was in smash and when I woke up I felt sad.

This will now be my number one desire for a smash game regardless of how illogical it is.

I'm more concerned with stages. Get every single 64, Melee, Brawl and 3DS stage into this game.

As for alt costumes... PM pretty much nailed the big ones. Melee Fox, Falco and Ganondorf are much needed. OOT Link. Super Metroid Samus.

And, of course, this:

I wonder how long it would take to mod Pit so that he permanently has the Three Sared Tresures as an alt. Because I sure as hell want that.

I want Fighters of Light and Dark as well.

KH Cloud and Eliwood for Roy too. Too many options for alts. Too little time.

I like how he responds to the "all Kirby stages come from games Sakurai made" with that an Epic Yarn stage was considered, but no mention of Return to Dreamland.

But at least another mention that Sakurai knows there's a bloat in Fire Emblem in Smash right now.

Leveraging the DLC character system, I'm guessing adding entirely new characters will not be as hacky as Brawl.

Like, full All Star, Classic, Smash Tour, Trophies, etc, would be entirely possible since the system to "plug n play" characters already exists.

There may be a time in the distant future, where a modded Smash 4 has Wolf, Ice Climbers, Snake, Squirtle, Ivysaur and Pichu, and the entire gang will be in one game.

I'm actually sure it'll happen. Back in the early days of Brawl modding, no one imagined we'd have something like what PM became, not only damn near perfect Melee physics but an authentic feeling playable Mewtwo.

Coding Ice Climbers will probably be a challenge but when there's a will there's a way with the smash modding community.

Much like Roy was with Brawl mods, I think Wolf will probably be the one who breaks new ground in Smash 4 modding.

If they can easily import Brawl animations and data, it would be even easier. With Brawl they had to work 100% from scratch.

Huh. so we are all in on Smash NX being a thing. Interesting - I wonder if it will come to pass and if it will be anything more than a straight port with maybe some/all of the DLC included.

As an aside I wasn't aware Smash 4 modding had become a thing - I thought the Wii U was uncrackable. Is this a recent breakthrough or have I just not been paying attention for a long while?

Like you, I'm not getting my hopes up. But I think a lot of people are seeing this to be a Smash equivalent to Hyrule Warriors Legends where it's mostly the same game but with a good chunk of new, exclusive content. So there is basis to hyped :)

As for hacking, I think Smash/Wii U hacking has been going on for a little while, but with the recent exploit discovered, it's really been coming along.

Maturity, bitches.
With Brawl I was more of a fan of reference textures since often 1. they weren't ugly OC costumes 2. a lot of vector hacks broke the game.

When the scene comes along a bit further I may look into making some of my own. There's already a few colour schemes I know I'd like to see.

Man I was so sure we would get at least 1 major costume/texture change for each character this time around. After seeing Little Mac's vastly different alternates as well as costume changes for Zero Suit I thought for sure Dry Bowser was just a stones throw away.

Since this new game is rumored to be more or less an enhanced port I don't expect Ridley as playable but please Sakurai give me one of my most desired features! At least one major costume change for everyone!

Project M really was on point with those things.

I guess it's all subjective, but the only ones I really see as ugly are their take on Melee Ganondorf and the ZSS costumes in the last version. Falco is on the borderline and OoT Sheik's hair is unfortunate, but that's about it.

To be honest the only alt costume from them I wasn't so crazy on was their Jet Set Radio alt for Sonic.

382px-JetSetSonicPM.png

Dunno, thought it looked really goofy and tacky lol.

It'd be kinda like somebody gave Pac-Man a Klonoa or Lloyd costume or something.

Look at the time, here's some more Smash 4 mods.

Ia5dZ6Ph.jpg

Well, what do we have here?

LZq8EGKh.jpg

Basically, a hazardless no fun allowed version of Jungle Hijinxs! No barrels, no additional plane to jump around in the background, just a simple and clean layout. It goes over the omega version of the stage.

LYzHs4Yh.jpg

K. Rool Returns...sort of

Just a little bonus, I downloaded Mario's long lost blue cap Jumpman color.

KIhWtL1h.jpg

Pretty identical to that other Jumpman costume I have, only obviously the cap is blue, his sleeves are slightly more brighter and the shoes are darker.

Whaaaat? The ones in TheDinoman's post are butt ugly? Among others.

I think their work looks a lot better than the Brawl models, Brawl in general has a really ugly washed out look that most of the PM additions don't have.

I never specified his post. The Samus one you posted looks awful though, as does JSR Sonic.

Yeah, If Smash NX is going to have new contents so I'm pretty sure that we wouldn't see any more Fire Emblem Representative.

Texture mods should look better in general for Smash 4 since the textures are easier to edit:

https://tcrf.net/Super_Smash_Bros._for_Wii_U#King_Dedede_Textures

Instead of having the shading baked in they now use normal maps. Dedede's gloves are a solid block of yellow colour now so you could even recolour that with Paint!

Though I wonder if someone will try to fix Ganondorf's clay face by adding in some baked shadows like his original TP/Brawl model.

They could, but it'd probably be a bit too much effort for a fairly mild improvement, especially since some of the issues with his model (like the larger eyes and noodley hair) can't easily be fixed with texture editing alone. I hope it won't be too long before we get a Hyrule Warriors face import...

Ladies and gents, the product y'all been waiting for.

OE9PWMOh.jpg

You can't tell from this image, but what I'm playing on is a hazardless version of the Pyrosphere stage. No Ridley, no bugs, no robots, just simple and clean once again. It goes over the omega version of the stage.

uwKCc1eh.jpg

Thought this looked cool so I took a photo of it

To be honest I actually don't hate Ridley as a boss hazard that much. I've had fun at parties with him tearing and blowing everyone up. That being said we really should of been given the option to turn him and the other hazards off while retaining the stage's general layout (instead of the omega stages...), so it's nice to have some mods that rectify this.

A bonus, that same fellow (Vaanrose I believe) who made that lovely Jumpman outfit Mario also made a color scheme for Luigi based on his SMB2 art.

RSZIiWFh.jpg

...but, let's be real here, we all know what this color is REALLY based on.

aO9vZYQh.jpg

That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!

lol

Ridley's the only stage hazard I think they went too far with and even then it's the fact that he's so broken (not to mention the entire context surrounding him) that I ultimately just find it hilarious.

And I know that's from the SMW cartoon, but they actually did make Brawl mods alts based on the CD-I games, including Ganondorf as the King of Hyrule. If only they had voice packs!

I typically love traveling stages and learnable, pattern-based stage hazards and can't stand the boredom and blandness associated with Omega stages, but I personally draw the line at bosses. They're just too intrusive for me. When it comes to Pyrosphere and Wily Castle, I only ever play their Omega versions. Those are two of only four stages that's true for (the others being The Great Cave Offensive and Kalos Pokémon League), but man I wish there was an option to play those stages without Ridley/Yellow Devil but with their platforms intact. Seems like such a waste to only have a choice between dealing with those damn bosses and the complete boredom that sets in when playing on a flat, platform-less stage like Final Destination... especially when you main a character who benefits from platform-based options.

These mods are definitely a step in the right direction, but only a tiny portion of Smashers will ever bother with learning how to install and use mods (and I'm usually not part of that portion, heh). Smash Wii U is almost perfect for me in terms of what I personally wanted it to be, but I would be overjoyed at the inclusion of a boss toggle for Smash NX.

I've talked to a lot of people who seem to think Smash NX is going to introduce a total deluge of new content, like most/all of the 3DS stages and like five new characters. I don't think there's any way that's happening, but I could definitely see a couple more stages along with, like, the Ice Climbers being added. I don't think there's going to be a ton of new content in Smash NX, though.

How comparable is this to installing Project M or the Homebrew Channel in terms of difficulty? I'm interested enough in having a Ridley-free version of the regular Pyrosphere to play on, but I don't want to go through the trouble if it's a serious pain in the ass or if it could put my Wii U or Smash save data at risk in any way. Is this a temporary/"benign" mod like Project M that goes away each time you turn the game off, or is there some risk associated with installing mods like these?

I just see boss stages as them framing Smash into different contexts (review Sakurai's Yellow Devil explanation in the April 2014 Direct to see what I'm talking about), so I adapt to them pretty easily alongside most everything else. It helps that most of them are actually really easy to take down, which is another problem with Ridley: he just keeps going no matter how much you pound on him, and that he's so absurdly huge/powerful doesn't help matters. In fact, I don't think I've ever successfully KO'd him before he flies off.

Omega stages are a great compromise to allow more 8-Player stages (and I play that mode quite a lot), so I don't mind them either. If anything, I find their flatness to be a refreshing cool down from all the wacky set-up I enjoy.

It's not that hard, it won't mess up your Wii U and or your save data or whatever. Just follow the instructions in the first pastebin and you'll be fine.

Smash Bros. has too much content in it to be properly monetized by Nintendo. That's why you have people making mods for alternate costumes and stages.
