Nintendo Aims to Have First (Second) Movie Out in Next 2-3 Years

Which Nintendo franchise should be made into a film first?

These are awful suggestions. If there is a Nintendo movie I would hope it's something that taps into Nintendo's whimsical stylings without doting on particular properties whose stories fit games better than film. I'm thinking more Wreck It Ralph rather than e.g. Spirits Within

why not both?

just like disney is doing with marvel, having the movies being more like hearted, and the netflix series more mature or something

Nintendo Cinematic Universe movies that finally lead to the SMASH BROTHERS movie we have been wanting for the last forever years.

Wasn't there a rumor of Splatoon 2 taking awhile to come out (around 2 years)? And didn't Josh Thomas tease a Splatoon movie? Hmm...
Didn't they make high quality CG renders Callie and Marie's concerts? hmmmmm......

I'm looking forward to them. They can at least be funny going by some of the dialogue in Nintendo's games.

Do we know what happened to the rumored Netflix The Legend of Zelda series?

The Smash film ends with live action and you realise that the whole universe was a Mom and her daughter playing with Amiibo's the whole time T_T

I'd honestly hope they don't go through with it.

Nintendo games have always been great on the strength of their gameplay and normally don't have great stories, barring The Legend of Zelda. What makes Mario great isn't the fact he's a complex character with a narrative arc, its the fact he jumps in creatively designed levels. The plot merely exists as a thin excuse for gameplay to continue. The same goes for a lot of Nintendo's stable; Pokemon, Pikmin, Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Punch-Out, Fire Emblem, etc. The only other title aside from TLoZ with a big emphasis on plot is Earthbound and even then Earthbound's distinct weirdness would be a tough sell for anyone.

I'd be down for a CG Legend of Zelda movie, but the issue of the silent protagonist is always going to be an issue with films based on games. Pokemon would be a good source for a film too, but how do you replicate the experience of the protagonist being a literal self-insert for the player in the context of a film? Punch-Out would be fun if it weren't for the fact Rocky cornered the boxing film genre. I'd rather not see Nintendo try and adapt their IP for the big screen because the whole reason their IP is so beloved is because of the gameplay i.e. the one thing movies cannot do.

What Marvel is doing is magic not even its direct competition (DC) can replicate let alone a video game company that has never written a compelling enough story to put to film ever.

Well I think what I said about text to spoken dialogue problems with Zelda would be twice as bad with Earthbound.

That being said, Earthbound has always been about the experience rather than the story. It's pure art in video game form. One of the few. Too much of it's magic comes from actually playing the game, experiencing it, and creating individual, nostalgic memories.

The existence of this video does make me believe it is possible to do a proper Earthbound project. But I still think it's improbable.

I don't put any stock into what that guy says regarding that sort of thing.

So the final episode of the hero of time link to wrap up the trilogy. I honestly have no idea which ip they have that will translation well to a movie. Dk is the closest to a standard kids film you see but don't think he's got the brand power Nintendo wants to work with.

Serious suggestion, get Genndy Tartakovsky on directing (and writing?) an animated Mario film. Just look at this footage he directed for an animated Popeye film (that's been cancelled/in limbo?)

I believe Sony said "we're doing Popeye, but not your way!" and now someone else is making the film. But now he's finishing Samurai Jack, so everyone wins!

I think Genndy could do a good Mario film, but he'd do an EXCELLENT WarioWare film.

So the problem people have with a Zelda film is how to handle Link? He'll just talk. He's allowed to, and him talking in a film isn't going to take anything away from the games.

Allowing him to talk doesn't mean he's going to return to the days of WELL EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUSE ME PRINCESS, which I'm sure Nintendo is well aware of and would avoid.

Can't wait for the post credits DK Rap. Miyamoto will be the Stan Lee esque character with cameos in each film.

you are saying like if nintendo will write the shit themselves, this is a licensed movie, so anything can happen

I really hope this doesn't mess with Wreck-It Ralph 2. I'd rather have Mario show up there then have Sony make a Mario film.

At least you can talk. Who are you?

Ah yes, just seen that the writer of Ratchet & Clank is now in charge of it. *pulls collar*

WarioWare would be like GOTG-tier. Gotta set up that universe first before you go there.

Didn't the Sony deal fall through?

Avi Arad said it was “just the beginning.” of negotiations with Nintendo, despite courting them for a very long time. If this were happening from Sony, I think we would have heard something concrete.

Wreck-It Ralph is Disney. Didn't the Sony deal fall through?

And there was a Sony email leak that had hinted Nintendo is going to partner with Sony to make a Mario film, which could get in the way of cameos in Wreck-It Ralph 2. Also we are not sure if the deal fell through or not.

Wreck-It-Ralph already had Mario related cameos…

He won't?! Disgraceful!

I doubt Nintendo would ever agree to a contract in which a cameo prevents a movie production by a different studio

It'll depend on how Angry Birds, Warcraft, and Assassin's Creed does. If at least one movie succeeds they'll make a movie... too bad there's no reason to show any confidence in video game movies though.

I'm not sure about the live action stuff doing well. Angry Birds? Maybe.

Good things about games with no to little story, or Zelda always having a different kind each game is that they can adapt things much better. Most game movies are often just a retelling and restricting themselves from being something more. Even if Nintendo were to focus on a specific IP, they have much more room to tell a new story.

I will say the Star Fox short tie-in was great and handled very well even though it retold the opening of the game. But it was a short and nothing more which is perfectly fine so it didn't overstay its welcome. Sometimes a short or short series or show is perfectly fine to tell what's needed as well. I hope Nintendo does make more anime shows too.

They're also working with partners so not all of it is in house. I do hope that Nintendo's movie does well though. I don't think I will see the Angry Birds movie but I did actually get some good laughs from the trailer so it may not be all bad. May not be for the critics, but for the fans of the IP.

Which is possible because Mario film rights were still with Nintendo then? I don't get this argument. Sony making a Mario film could potentially stop future cameos.

I can only hope! Rich Moore has expressed interest in wanting Mario to have a bigger role in the next film. I'd be worried Sony would be against it if that got in the way of their own Mario film.

Live-action Zelda beginning with Ocarina of Time, then Majora's Mask, then Twilight Princess.

Animated Zelda movies beginning with Skyward Sword and then Wind Waker. Could also do Phantom Hourglass.

CGI Splatoon movie.

Animated Mario movie series.

Super Smash Bros. animated TV show (or anime).

Kid Icarus anime.

To quote myself

I think the dialogue and the quirky aspect of many Zelda characters is much harder to adapt as a cinema experience moreso than Metroid which has much more common sci-fi traits.

To further clarify with an example, it's why I think voice acting can be very dangerous for Zelda games as I don't believe the written text translates well to spoken dialogue.

Blatant cashgrabs should not be the only reason to make movies. That's how you end up with soulless pieces of crap.

And yet soulless pieces of crap are generally much better business than allowing something as batshit insane as the Mario Bros. movie to happen again. It is perfectly OK for a film to be made for the express purpose of generating revenue and hopefully a profit: that's why 95% of films get made in the first place.
