Mirror's Edge Catalyst - Review Thread

Sounds more or less what I was afraid of once I heard it was going to be open-world.

I'll still probably pick this up, but I'm content with waiting a bit.

Mirror's Edge will forever be a great idea that will never be a great video game.

It'll take another dev/publisher combo to bring the idea to its fruition, I think. It may not look quite as expensive from someone else, but I bet you it will be more fulfilling.

But who knows when that'll happen.

Wow. 74 for the original game, and 86 for the enhanced edition re-release. What happened? Did the game change that much? Was it just not part of the zeitgeist and it paid for it?

I assume reviewers jumping on that positive word of mouth train to not make a fool out of themselves. Try re-releasing Demon's Souls today ;)

I could be wrong but I don't remember seeing a lot of calls for this to be open world. The feedback or complaints seemed to concentrate more on the combat side of things.

This gens status quo – reviews all over the place. All the doom amd gloom in some of these posts, Dying Light’s meta was 74 and it was a damn fun game.

I think it depends on what one liked/disliked about the first. If you thought "I love these mechanics just give me an open world to collect shit in and do time trials" then this is exactly what you wanted from a sequel to the first. If you thought "I love these mechanics and the tight design of the game, but I wish combat was just not even in the mix and I hope the sequel doesn't dilute the focus by adding open world padding" then this sequel is probably not what you wanted.

If you loved the original Mirror’s Edge, you will likely love Catalyst as well.
Financial Post - 6/10
However, as with the original Mirror’s Edge eight years ago, this reboot isn’t all that I imagined it could be.
TheSixthAxis - 7/10
At its best, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a joyous flight across the rooftops of a gorgeous city, with a grace that belies the weight and impact of Faith’s movement, but DICE seem to forget this on a few occasions, dragging it down with combat that brings the free running to a halt.
IB Times - 3.5/5
If you loved the original Mirror's Edge, or enjoy the concept of free-running around a beautiful city without the fear of falling off a skyscraper or crotching yourself on a railing, Catalyst is most definitely right up your alley.
ZTGD - 8/10
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is the follow-up no one ever thought would get made. It is clearly a passion project for the team at DICE, and it finally feels like it lives up to its ambitious design.
Game Revolution - 3.5/5
If you're a fan of the original Mirrors' Edge, this will probably be a no-brainer, but Catalyst would be an easier recommend even with the clunky controls if it had been sold cheaper, perhaps as episodic content.
Xbox Achievements - 75/100
It’s a solid game as far as playing the story missions are concerned, but like Faith herself it can sometimes fail to find its legs elsewhere.

Payed full price already,,,, now pre loading,,,

I liked the first game,,, amazing concept and gameplay,,,, not among the highest rated games ,,, but I do not care about that ,,,

It is pure gameplay in an age when people want playable movies,,,

DICE missed the point with this game. I dont get it. Why didnt you just make more of the first fucking game and try to clean up the story a bit?

I feel a little bit dead inside as we're probably living the death of Mirror's Edge.

I don't think this franchise deserved it.

Based on my 6hrs with the EA Access trial, I walked away from the game with the impression of it being an 'Ok' game. Doesn't do anything horribly wrong - aside from the boring characters and story, but doesn't seem to excel at anything either. The running and platforming all work well enough, but it never Wowed me. I'm going to rent the game just to finish the main story. The only side missions I enjoyed were the Dash. The delivery mini-games didn't make sense when the customer yelled at you because you failed to deliver a flower in 30 seconds. It's a rental for me, and then I'll download it from the EA Vault once it gets added by this winter.

I always argued for Mirror's Edge to have freer components, but adding up a lively hub system instead of a collection-based open world.

If you want a good story, you should just buy a book instead of playing video games.

Do you really think if they had just churned out a more polished version of the 2008 game that the reviews would have been kind? They would have dinged it for just being "more of the same" and "too familiar".

"damned if you do, damned if you dont" is a shitty defense. I hope you bought the collectors edition of this game since you think its so great.

lol wow

If they're gonna put so much story/character/dialog into a video game, maybe they should make it good next time

This. It's fine if they don't want to bother making a good story, but if so then don't have long drawn out story sequences? Every cutscene in the beta just had me groaning and wishing it was over.

That's their fault for wasting money. Stories just aren't for this medium.

I'm taking the piss over the story. Of course it should be better, and of course it should be better with the money they dumped in. I don't understand how you can put a stamp of approval on such an inept story.

Yep, even the best story of this year (some claim) is just a retread of National Treasure 2. Still got a long way to go for game storytelling as a whole.

There's no question that video games tend to have so-so stories. But there are now games with millions invested in them. They can afford good writting.

I'm excited to play it, given how long it's been since the first, but I can't yet say whether it is great. I can say I wanted an open world, rather than a linear game like the first.

There are reviews that literally say "this game is basically the same as the first one" and gives it an 8/10. 8 years later and it's basically the same. I can't think of another franchise that does this.

Yeah but the first game was amazing so if you loved it (like me) this is a good thing. I played and loved the beta and I don't care about reviews here.

See, the problem with me parodying the stupid comments about book and video games is that inevitably, someone comes along and agrees with me.

So people are going apeshit over the 7's it's getting? Dat metacritic scale huh?

So it won't be GOTY but it'll probably still be a good game if you like that sort of thing (I don't, myself, but come on guys, some of those reactions are laughable).

The horror!

This seems like IGN journalism.

Called it: this game might supercede The Division as Most Devisive of 2016.
Theres nothing decisive about it. DICE took an original game, rebooted the story to make it even worse, shoehorned in open world mechanics, and added a garbage skill tree system.

They fucked up. Period.

How come Metacritic hasn't been updated yet? There are more than 20 reviews up already... Are EA purposefully blocking Metacritic to post up the aggregate score?

You sound angry. Have you played the game?

This is a very naive comment. Instead of asking narrative directors and game creators to aspire to achieve a level of excellence in storytelling, you're instead willing to give them a pass. Very naive indeed.

Only reason I'm disappointed by the reviews is it means more people might not give it a chance, unless EA makes a major marketing push.

Worth noting the original's metacritic score was only 78-79% and it was close to my Game of Gen 7, so I'm honestly not worried about the scores. I love their movement system, and I can't imagine the combat being any worse than the first game :b

EDIT: ^Beaten like a rented mule

Disappointing reviews. It's not bad enough to get me to cancel my pre-order, but it's definitely sounding like a let down. Here's to hoping I enjoy my time with it!
