Mirror's Edge Catalyst - Review Thread

Seems like its okay from the scores. Problem is that its competing with a lot of really great games coming out right now, and if you have to chose between an okay game and a great game you're probably not gonna get this.

So disappointing to read about the design problems of this game being exactly what was predicted after the earliest developer comments :(

Mirrors Edge was a diamond in the rough, despite its flaws it was genuinely special, they somehow moved further away from the things that made it great and towards those typical systems and mechanics that fill every mediocre game.

I think it depends on what one liked/disliked about the first. If you thought "I love these mechanics just give me an open world to collect shit in and do time trials" then this is exactly what you wanted from a sequel to the first. If you thought "I love these mechanics and the tight design of the game, but I wish combat was just not even in the mix and I hope the sequel doesn't dilute the focus by adding open world padding" then this sequel is probably not what you wanted.

Yup

I'm completely in the latter group and that's why I'm so disinterested in catalyst

Well, I expected this from the first trailer they showed. It's not a bad game but to me it's not a true Mirror's Edge reboot and doesn't have the same nice vibe from the original. (Impressions from 3 hours of beta & 2 from trial)

I'll still pick it up at launch if not to support this game but to support the IP in general, but I know I'm in the minority with this, so... it depresses me like fuck to say this but, this will probably be the last Mirror's Edge ever. :(

I thought it to be an average-good game when I saw the gameplay...seems like most reviewers thought so too. I'm probably gonna try it out when the price drops

Doubtful

You could beat the entire first game without engaging in combat even once

Is that true of catalyst?
How do you beat that final level server room on anything but Easy without combat? o_o Room was filled with armored gunners wielding LMG's..

I haven't done it myself, but I've finished the original game at least 28 times so my guess would be to get the armed Gunners to shoot at you while running close to the servers so they accidentally shoot the servers themselves.

Kinda disappointed about these scores tbh, loved the first one

But i have already too much shit to play at the moment, i'll grab it on sale at the end of the year

I'm heartbroken.

I don't understand the necessity to put RPG-like upgrades systems everywhere. Specially in a skill-based game like this...

I don't really care for the numbers at the end of the reviews, but the changes in gameplay are what I feared to be a problem for me. I'm still torn after watching the giant bomb quicklook. The freeroaming open world stuff does surprisingly little for me :(

I think people are forgetting the reviews of the first game. This is reviewing better so far.

Mixed like the first game, which I loved.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Day one.

Wait, did people actually expect this to get more positive reviews?
I loved the first one but come on, it's an inherently niche thing and was always going to get middling reviews.

Definitely picking up that CE when the prices drop though.

Same. It's not 10/10 OMG GREATEST GAME EVAR!, but it certainly sounds like a polarizing game that stumbles at times but when it's in its groove, it really soars...

... which is EXACTLY what the reviews for the first Mirror's Edge were like.

I don't know where the idea is coming from that the first Mirror's Edge got reviews that were just as mixed as Catalyst. That simply isn't the truth.

The first Mirror's Edge is at a 79 on Metacritic. That's a full 9 points higher than Catalyst. Catalyst also only has 17 reviews in, and generally scores tend to drop a bit as more reviews come in.

By any measurement, the reviews have been a disappointment thus far.

So basically it's a good fun game but nothing spectacular. Huge fan of the original, should be worth the $47 I got it for, at least for me.

There are PLENTY of low - very low - scores for the original too. It's a polarizing game. Lots of 7s, 6s, and 5s. Variety outright hated the original (45/100). Even the sites I followed that liked it gave it merely "average" reviews, mostly in the 7s.

So if it's a "huge" difference between a 71 (currently) and 79, I guess I just don't see it.

I hope people just had super high expectations from the original and were disappointed this wasn't way bigger and way better. As long as this captures magic from the original, I'll probably enjoy it.

People, remember that the media were down on the original game as well. It is likely that they have repeated their mistake imo.

It's a huge difference.

Imagine if Uncharted 4 dropped 8 or 9 points from Uncharted 3 and sat at an 83 or 84 MC. These forums would be burning to the ground.

A sequel is supposed to improve upon it's predecessor. If the scores were within 2-3 points, I could see. But 8-9 points? That's a huge drop.

I think some people here are putting a bit too much stock into arbitrary review scores...

Also not surprised. I thought Mirror's Edge was a great standalone game that really didn't need a sequel, and nothing they showed since gave me a reason to believe otherwise.

I honestly don't even mind that this is currently at 71 on MC.

Personally I enjoyed the beta a lot more than the original in itself, so because of that alone I shall be picking up the game.

I was day 1 for this having loved the original, but...I might wait for a sale since I have too much already and I can see it dropping quick. I really think the open world was a bad idea
