Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

I mentioned GoW4 because it was rumoured that it would be one of the launch titles for the new console, alongside Deep Down. So, I thought that, if they're not showing Neo, they might wait on GoW4 too.

They could just show the non-Neo version at E3 if they want to reveal the game...

Someone earlier (possibly insider?) posted that E3 message is PS4/PSVR, and the Xmas product is PSVR, which is why Neo's not being pushed now.

Made perfect sense even if it's not true.

sell a ton of PSVRs to early adopters (most likely initial buyers) at Christmas, then being Neo out in the generally quieter spring. Or hold it off until 2H17 and do a full refresh like the rumoured scorpio with a bigger chip once yields have improved

So it wont be at E3, but you can bet any games we see their will be showing the NEO version (or PC version). The regular PS4 owner can just expect an automatic downgrade from here on out of everything they see.

So they now have the burden of officially stating there's a higher spec PS4 coming, with none of the advantages of showing it off with the titles on show at E3? Seems a bit backwards to me.

Hope and pray Microsoft show off Scorpio anyway, they'll have the advantage of being the only hardware at E3.

Agreed. I don't agree with all of the "to announce it now spells doom and gloom" type posts. If Xbox could have Scorpio out this year, I feel they'd absolutely have it on the E3 show floor.

You guys think just because it isn't shown at e3 it won't be out this year? They'll either have heir own even or reveal it at Gamescom in detail. And release it shortly after. Games releasing after septemeber need to have a NEO mode. It's be out after that

I'm happy it won't be at E3. Unless it's kicking off a new generation, I'd rather not spend time on hardware during the presentation.

As a non-PS4 owner this makes me not know what to do :( Was hoping for some clarity out of E3.

Want to play UC4, want to play No Man's Sky in August...want to play The Tomorrow Children... but don't want to buy a PS4 if Neo is right around the corner.

But is it? :/

Same here, we (UK) have had some brilliant deals recently and I have passed. Well will keep waiting...wondering how much the premium will be

Well, well....Very interesting language. I wonder if all gaming sites/podcasts all saying 100% it will be at E3 had anything to do with this announcement? Pretty big step to take to announce a console while no details at all are given.

Have to say it real sounds to me like the Neo plan (before leaks) was to treat it like a slim and announce/launch it within a month. The only difference being the current PS4 continues on.

I just can't see this strategy working though. The extra logistics and cost of making two consoles as well as compromising both consoles because you have a existing 40 million user base makes little sense to me.

The line about Neo being aimed at the hardcore and 4K TV sounds suspect to me. There is no way they developed the Neo just for the hardcore niche.

I also now doubt the iterative console model will come to pass if they sound this defensive already.

That would be stupid at this point. Sony is right for doing it this way. They can talk about it (same as I think MS would talk about it) but they need to focus on PSVR sales and PS4 sales. The Neo is just the icing on the cake and will be talked about later.

This is going to kill the hype. No point getting excited for all these games when we still have to wait on the new system to play them on.
Why would a console that's a bit more powerful kill hype for upcoming games? It's not like the enhancements will be that drastic from the rumored specs.

I'm okay with this, E3 belongs to games, not hardwares in my opinion.

Meh. I won't be forking out for a fucking 4K television for this thing. Guess I'll stick with my rusty old PS4 for the forseeable.

There is precisely zero chance that this machine will be capable of native (and not upscaled) 4K rendering for video games.

It will be out this year I think.

They will do an apple like event where it's announced along with pricing and all the details you would ever need. It will then either be "out now" or out in the next couple of weeks.

Considering its base functionality will be identical to that of the ps4, it's the only way they can do it without cannibalising a high degree of ps4 sales.

So they are not going to phase out the current ps4 so that is good. Keep one for the price conscious and another for the enthusiast.

The fact they are keeping the current Ps4 and Neo is enthusiast means to me they are going to take the more powerful Neo option that Osirisblack mentioned.

Which makes more sense, no point in having 2 consoles (cheap and enthusiast) with 50-100 bucks difference.

Give us some Zen.

FFS. They might just postpone the entire E3 to 2017 at this point.

Well, upside is that we are getting a PS4K

What is wrong with them not showing Neo and focusing on their extensive, exhausting, and incubated first party lineup? Literally Sony has a gamut of studios that have had projects that are essentially in hibernation. This is the perfect time to really flex that muscle.

I'm with you.
It sometimes feels like people forget hardware is nothing without the software.

And honestly so far the software output from a lot of studios has been ok-above decent.
Rather have my E3 Sony presser focused on games than a new slightly updated console that just shows off better draw distance or whatever.

Translation: We aren't going to announce the Neo because we'd like to sell a few PS4s before we have Neos for the market.

Sony have the PSVR due to release this october. It's quite expensive and needs all the spotlight it can get. So they address right now the fact that PS4 Neo is real because people would have been very desappointed if it wasn't announced at E3. I think this statement was needed and is a smart move.

But why confirm its existent thou.

Probably so they can make sure the "we're not abandoning the regular PS4" sentiment can get out there, since everyone already knows the Neo is coming. While that may be true, we all know anyone that's going to buy a PS4 for the last month or so has been waiting to see what happens with the Neo. Nobody wants to get burned.

How are you jumping to that?. We've just seen two of the best looking games this gen launched last month running superbly too.

The way he frame it, make me think they are not going to kill traditional console generation, which is fine by me.

Still right from a business point of view.

Anoucements of new hardware should be made only a couple of weeks in advance.

Otherwise they loose sales on the current PS4.

Good luck rendering games at that resolution. With 60 frames per second. For 400 bucks.

I could see it doing so for 2D games like traditional anime fighting games, indie games, or games with intentionally simple, artistic 3D graphics. And the Atari 2600 classics bundles, gotta have 4K for those. No doubt the "AAA" games aren't going to hit that at all.

Better late than never. Their 1st party output has been pretty lacking.

Yum. This is true stuff, too quiet considering all the muscle.

Well that's a surprise. Figure it would have been front and centre with 1st Party Games all shown on Neos.

Guess that means no scorpio either. So much for a new hardware filled E3.

More like throw people a bone and stop the slaughtering of journalist and gamer questions about Neo if they remain completely tight lipped.

Maybe MS is about to go and announce a 2017 console now as well, and Sony don't want to have no response/a response that seems reactionary after E3.

Depends on when they plan on releasing the Scorpio IMO, if it's significantly more powerful than the PS4K, showing it off first seems quite advantageous. But yeah, if it's not coming for a while, sadly they'll probably not show it.

Why does everyone keep saying they'll announce at Gamecom? It seems like it would make way more sense to announce at PSX. Hit the core audience that would even consider buying this in the first place, place it after PSVR to not kill sales of the headset, then announce a PS4K/Horizon bundle or something similar.

Putting the PSVR and Neo out at the same time seemed so weird to me and like a bad move even from someone who was considering buying both. With all the money they've invested in PSVR I think there's no way we see Neo coming out this year only so that they can focus all their marketing minds/dollars on pushing VR units while the base PS4 continues to dominate. Then throw the Neo in early next year once VR sales start to even out and discount the base PS4 to move more units of both.
