Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

What backlash? Sony is in the driver's seat this generation. Why would they intentionally take a bat to their kneecaps this early in the year when they can take their time and unveil it later? The pressure is on MS to unveil Scorpio and reboot their generation as soon as possible, not Sony. Also, this doesn't confirm anything. If production is currently going on, they can reveal it at Gamescom and still be ready for a holiday season launch.

I think Sony will delay it till early next year IMHO. Simply because PSVR will be given the limelight this year. Also gives Sony more time to have more Neo Mode games ready.
Also Sony are leading they don't need to rush out at the moment. They will probably try to match the Scorpio specs I think.

This is for the best, VR needs to be the hardware focus for the rest of the year. Having said that, I do think Neo/Scorpio in the same calendar year is favourable to Microsoft, especially if the rumoured specs are to be believed.

If that's "announced", then NX was officially announced over a year ago.

I know what you're getting at, so maybe we should rather talk about "reveal" than "announce". I asume there won't be a notewhorthy impact unless they show the console itself or announce reveal price and launch date.

Wii U's been clearly impacted by the NX announcement ever since last year.

Some more quotes which were left out of the OP-

Both PS4 variants will also support its forthcoming virtual reality headset.

Developers should also see a "seamless" experience between the two versions, he said, requiring a "small but manageable" amount of extra work when creating a game for both.

As with the current PS4 and its forthcoming VR headset, the new console will be standalone profitable at the time that we launch it.

Interesting part about this, is that not all journalistic mediums are equal. This type of information never gets released during an interview with the most prestigious gaming mags.

Only the financial times and WSJ.

As far as hardware is concerned, what more can Sony offer?

A TV Tuner and DVR capabilities like Xbox One?

Man, wouldn't that make Microsoft feeling good enduring all the hate for introducing the console as a media box first?

Sony has Playstation Vue, I think that is their strategy with something like that. It has DVR etc. I actually like it alot i quit my cable and im using it right now.

A shame, I want the excitement of new hardware reveals damnit!

I'm encouraged by what he said about a large majority of games supporting the Neo. Yeah, from October or November all games coming out will need to support both, but what he said gives me hope he's referring to the entire catalogue available right now.... does this give us hope that ALL of Sony's first party games will likely be worked on to enhance for Neo? Maybe their exclusive games too like Bloodborne?

And as far as practicality goes I see no reason why a few folk at FROM can't revisit the game and make it take advantage of Neo for some raw performance improvements, enhance their AA solution etc. It would be a boon to be able to say your game supports Neo, it will make people eager to go back to the game and play again, maybe buy the DLC, and of course appeal to new PS4 Neo owners wanting to play games that take advantage of the spec bump hence they're more likely to buy games supporting Neo as opposed to those that don't get patched.

Seems like a sensible thing to do, go and revisit past games and let them make better use of the new hardware and get your game back in the limelight to achieve a few more sales.

Also, I'll happily go back and replay games like Infamous should they give us those insane graphics but at 60fps solid.

I didn't even realistically expect this coming out at the end of this year. Way too soon. Sounds like Fall 2017 at the most, with PS5 hitting 2020.

Man the people that have already traded in their PS4 waiting for Neo are going to be getting thirsty.

I was looking at trade in price at Game the other day.

They do not need to show it at E3. They are not launching a new console platform. It is a more powerful box in the same echosystem, playing the same software.

Same goes for MSFT.

Man, some of you are just embarrassing.

Why would they acknowledge it now if they are not announcing it at E3? Wouldn't it hurt the PS4 sales from now until Neo release?
That's what I don't understand. I'm waiting for the neo regardless if they show it or not. Personally I was hoping they would show some games running off of it. Maybe the mainstream gamers don't know about it?

I'm buying a 4k TV today, so little bummed out that this probably isn't coming out until next year, but ah well.

That said, if this allows Sony to change up those leaked specs GB got and maybe juice it up a bit more in light of the rumored Scorpio specs, then I'll gladly take that with a 2017 release.

For what it's worth, I saw a very good increase in image quality on my PS4 games when I bought my 4K tv. It upscaled very nicely.

Cool

I don't like a new, better version being announced, but at least this gives me more time to finish the games I already own

This is planned years in advanced, it is not a reaction to scorpio leaks....

If you read osirisblack first Neo leak, Sony had 2 options on the table, Neo or Neo with big bump to CPU at more cost and they had not finally decided on which option.

If that is true, and Sony went with the more powerful CPU (zen lite maybe) then it might set them back a few months....

So no, its not decided years in advance.

Is there even a 4K TV that doesn't have atrocious delay?

My LG in game mode is 64ms. Not that bad for console gaming. There are also some 4K tvs with even shorter delays.

Here is a decent site to check on your model and others:

Here is a Samsung with great response time in game mode.

this is basically a cold war or arms race between Microsoft, Sony, and even Nintendo.
Everyone is holding the new consoles cuz they are scared of what the others will do.

I'm here waiting for the same backslash Nintendo got for not revealing NX at E3

It would be interesting to see what the people who trashed Nintendo for this reason say about this now

That's odd. Are they sticking with this year or will they delay and match Scorpio spec wise?

This feels like a modern Cold war, so exciting.

There goes fall 2016 release.

And why?
This is not a new console. It's just a new model in the PS4 family. Like the n3DS or simply a Slim with updated hardware.
They can release it a few weeks after annoucing it.
E3 announcement didn't make any sense since the beginning, people just want to have big announcements at E3 regardless if they make sense or not :D

This is exactly what I knew would happen. And when everyone was freaking out about feeling shafted, I'm like, how? The software is made by the same company? Why would the neo have completely different tools than the OG Ps4? Very glad that's not the case and it will just be a easy porting job.

Wait, people were really expecting a new next-gen type console? lol

I hope him saying they are supporting both doesn't mean they won't kill off the original PS4, replace it with the Neo and then add a new version down the line.

They need to be full in on the iterative consoles.

People are going on the rumoured release date of Sept/Oct. PSX is in December.

Jeff Rigby has you covered with PS4 firmware updates.

When was this rumored though? All I know is that Sony said all games must be built with Neo support by October-ish. That never meant it was being released in October. That's why PSX makes the most sense, talk about it in December, get it out by February.

Didn't Sony say last year that Paris Games Week is their EU event from now on? Will they even have a press conference on GC?

GC was only 6 weeks after E3 last year which was too close for Sony for 2 different conferences. This year it's back to 10 weeks so I could see them going back to gamescom.
