Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

I think it will get a stage but not this stage.

Oh for sure, I just mean initial confirmation was probably best for off-stage, which is what this is.

I suspect its actual reveal will be on-stage, probably at PSX (when most your eyes are sony fans).

If they announced and showed this at E3, what would they be showing the public without alienating the current userbase?

Showing games at 4k doesn't translate to streams on YouTube very well, although 60fps for current games would to some degree.

Sony has to release a 4K capable player for the mainstream, but they have to be careful how they do this. It is an interesting development and one that seems natural.

I'd be more than happy to buy a new console every year, but I don't think I'm in the majority. What happens to rev1 users 9 years in, if the platform is still current?

When was this rumored though? All I know is that Sony said all games must be built with Neo support by October-ish. That never meant it was being released in October. That's why PSX makes the most sense, talk about it in December, get it out by February.

Well it was from that. Games released in September, need a Neo patch, games released in October, has to be day 1.

Kind of makes sense for a release, but yeah, jumping to conclusions all round.

They do not need to show it at E3. They are not launching a new console platform. It is a more powerful box in the same echosystem, playing the same software.

Same goes for MSFT.

Man, some of you are just embarrassing.

God, you're right. I'm going full PC now. Console gaming is DEAD.

It would be interesting to see what the people who trashed Nintendo for this reason say about this now

oprah-shade-birthday.gif

The difference is the WiiU is dead and buried, and it's expected that Nintendo would be smart enough to announce new hardware.

MS and Sony do not have to do this, as their sales are still going strong. It's not that complicated, and there's certainly no hypocrisy going on if that's what you're implying.

Man the people that have already traded in their PS4 waiting for Neo are going to be getting thirsty.

I was looking at trade in price at Game the other day.

If they traded them in without a release date, specs, or even confirmation of the Neo's existence, then they deserve the parched throats.

Of course God of War 4 will be there! The Neo is a PS4 that runs games at higher settings, it will have no exclusive games.
Not just higher resolution but also higher fidelity. Actually thinking about it we might get footage from the Neo version of GOW4 at E3 since the game won't be out before the Neo is out.

My LG in game mode is 64ms. Not that bad for console gaming. There are also some 4K tvs with even shorter delays.

Here is a decent site to check on your model and others:
http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/

Here is a Samsung with great response time in game mode.

Thanks for the link. I was looking for input lag resources for 4K 60 - 65 inch panels.

It makes sense if you don't think about PSVR and the time/money spent in that. I was skeptical of Neo releasing this year only because I've heard how much Sony invested in PSVR. Releasing the Neo at any point this year would very easily/quickly overshadow the PSVR release simply because you could do more with Neo than you could PSVR for the prices.

They can't reveal this and sell the psvr.... Psvr cost 399-499. They can't add a $400-500 device to that and expect people to bite. Next year they will sell it as an upgrade..

So either a gamescom and October release or perhaps they are redesigning it now to be more of a generational leap in power to match the Scorpio and it will be next spring.

They aren't redesigning it. They'll have a few designs on the go at the same time. They'll go for the more powerful design now to combat Scorpio

lol @ people thinking that no Neo means no games for PS4 at this E3

This changes nothing for both current gaming and PSVR [which runs fine on PS4].

Not even close to the same situation. PS4 has sold through more than the Wiiu and Xbox 1 combined. Nintendo is fading in the home console space, they needed to bring the noise. Sony only needs to keep showing games and support for their well-performing console.

I have the 60inch Samsung SUHDTV and the input lag is practically non existent. It is so nice and snappy. I play a lot of CoD, Overwatch and Battlefield on it with no issue.

I don't get why people are surprised Neo isn't going to be at E3. It's not going to arrive until October at the earliest, so all it would be doing is spending the next 4 months cannibalising PS4 sales and taking focus away from PSVR.

They made the right choice.

No Scorpio or Neo, this e3 is gonna be lame af

How can it be lame if there is amazing software on display?

I'm a little bemused by the thirst for new consoles but not the thirst for new games to play on them.
Like y'all would rather see a box that is touted having 6Tflops etc and a bunch of tech demo bs?

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” he said.
Doesn't this mean that some PS4 games won't work on NEO? How's that possible?

I'm ok with this, its better to know than be disappointed at the event. That said, now that the cat is out of the bag, why not just mention when it is going to be shown.

At least it exists and will co-exists with the original PS4 as expected. I hope this means we also get a slim PS4.

Doesn't this mean that some PS4 games won't work on NEO? How's that possible?

It just means not all games will show improvements.

Personally I think the main reason for upgrading to Neo will be PSVR. So I reckon that in the end, PSVR Will cost me about 800 euro's after all. I hope it will be worth it.

Not sure if already posted, but there is more in the article on the motivations for this, and the kind of model they seem to be projecting.

The plan marks the first time that Sony has improved the processing power of a PlayStation midway through the usual console cycle, as it looks to keep up with the more rapid pace of product launches in the smartphone and PC sectors.

Mr House did not go as far as Xbox chief Phil Spencer in saying that consoles would become more like PCs, seeing regular improvements to their components rather than jumping between generations as they have for the last 30 years, he saw an opportunity to deliver “some additional benefits” to both consumers and developers within what is usually a five to six year lifespan.

“The consumer is attuned to a different cadence of innovation in technology thanks in great part for the upgrades cadence on mobile phones or PCs,” Mr House said.

So the model may not be one of endless generations as much as revisions within generations at a small number of technological inflection points.

Also:

Both PS4 variants will also support its forthcoming virtual reality headset, which will go on sale later this year.

Developers should also see a “seamless” experience between the two versions, he said, requiring a “small but manageable” amount of extra work when creating a game for both.

As with the current PS4 and its forthcoming VR headset, the new console will be “standalone profitable at the time that we launch it”, Mr House said.

...

The investment required to develop the new PS4 is already accounted for in Sony’s latest financial results, he added./QUOTE]

Doesn't really take away from my hype for E3, for a while I was convinced it would be a no show. It was only somewhat recently I began to think there was a decent chance of it showing up. I want to see more from the many already announced games, and see what will be revealed (Dead Don't Ride, GoW, Spidey). PS4k can wait a few more months.

But Sony doesn't have declining sales and flop system sis so truly they don't need to be dragged. Plus with the added benefit of having third parties including many first party titles themselves, they aren't on the brink of extinction and actually need to show this system, unlike Nintendo. Sad, because Zelda might be the only thing y'all get this year while the PS4 is still well supported into 2017

I was considering doing it just this afternoon, before E3 announcements dropped resale values. This thread has saved me from a grave mistake. In that sense, good on House for managing expectations and getting this out there ahead of time.

What I'm wondering is will they secretly show new games for 2017 that are displaying NEO mode graphics just for the WOW factor without telling us?
