Sony confirms PS4 Neo, [Cites smartphone cycle, waiting until enough games post E3]

I wouldn't get too worried about games running at 30fps on one console at 60fps on another. It's much more likely that devs will go for more eyecandy over framerate

So basically "screw what the person actually knows something said my theory is what counts." I guess our conversation is done.

What the hell are you talking about? If you are referring to the post earlier about the possible two specs and Sony deciding which lever to pull, we have no clue what those higher specs could be. While the person in the know has done us a solid, it's all speculation at this point. I would think you would be reasonable enough to consider that before going, "You don't take what the insider said as complete gospel!? Conversation done." Shit's disingenuous as fuck.

So if we're at a 0% likelihood for a Neo reveal @ E3, how likely do you think a Neo showing would be at the following?

  • Gamescom?
  • Paris Games Week?
  • TGS?
If it's shown at any of the above, when do you think it'd release? (If announced at Gamescom, Paris Games Week, etc...)

There is a time frame where MS doesn't care if ONE sales are killed completely. Wonder when that is though.

Said it before and I believe it but I don't think they give a shit about the ONE at all. They only work on the software side of it for the scorpio as well.

Just logic. If it came out this year, E3 would be the perfect stage to reveal it.

Disagree. Too large of a gap between announcement and release that could hurt sales over the summer months. Even then, they have enough to focus on with PSVR for their hardware fix during this E3, save Neo for later.

I'm thinking September so that would align the best with TGS. And I'm going with an early - mid October release.

Uh... hm. I was planning on picking up a PS4 or "Neo" based on E3 information on the latter sometime this year, but I suppose now I should just wait until the Neo is finally confirmed?? I'm really unsure. This seems like a mistake.

Shinobi said he heard Gamescom. TGS would definitely be out of the question due to it not being the console demographic it once was.

That puts it in a good window of late August for the full reveal.

Thow blows my mind. Even though I understand that it is true, it is always a shock to me to hear. I won't even watch a DVD if a Blu-ray is available. The quality is just so much better.

Which is why I guess I am the market for the PS4 Neo.

The people who still watch movies on discs don't choose discs because they're better quality. They get discs because they can't access/can't afford streaming services. Maybe no home broadband, or no streaming player. Or they have these things but don't really understand them. If you asked them, they would have no idea what 5.1 audio even is.

The amount of people that want discs because the quality is better than streaming is so small as to be virtually non-existent. The idea that 4K Blu-Rays will ever seen meaningful adoption is laughable. They will be restricted to a very small subset of home theater enthusiasts. You will never be able to rent them.

Better shadow resolutions, framerates, drawn distances, foliage densities, physics calculations, lighting, shaders, etc., are all an option with more than double the Flops.

If games are hitting 900p/60 in multiplayer (like Battlefront/UC4), 1080p/60 in DOOM, I can see them hitting 1080p/60 in the Neo. My X1 scaler is God Tier, so I am content with 1080p native for all on Neo.

Okay, so it's just more visuals. I'm currently playing The Witcher 3 on PS4 again and the game looks great. Too many gamers who care about visuals more than anything else. Visuals don't help the gameplay or mechanics. And that is the difference between base PS4 and Neo PS4...one will clearly look better than the other. People purchased an PS4/Xbox One because cross gen games would obviously look better on the current gen consoles. It's the same thing.

Who is being screwed over? If you're ok with your ps4 don't upgrade. People will buy the cheap model or spend a little bit more if they want a premium experience.

You said it yourself Uncharted 4 looks fine. So why would anyone feel screwed over?

People who don't care won't buy it. People who do want it will buy it. There won't be this mass hysteria. It's actually pretty simple

The 40m consumers. Uncharted 4 looks great but once Neo gets released, developers and especially publishers aren't going to care about the base model just like they didn't care about last gen when releasing cross gen games.

No, why cant a consumer pay more money to have uncharted 4 run at 60 FPS.

It does not mean your game will run worse, its only if you have some issue with others having something better than you that they paid more for.

How do you play Witcher 3 knowing some guy is playing it at 1440p60 on his dual Titans ?

What will you do ? Buy a PC, someone is always better than whatever you have.

What do you do when someone overtakes you in his Ferrari ?

LOL. I'm playing The Witcher 3 on PS4 right now and why would I care if someone is playing it with better visuals? Better visuals doesn't make the game better, just look better. No to buying a gaming PC. I'm a console gamer but if this idea catches on and replaces what consoles have always been, I'll most likely quit gaming because sorry, it's just not worth it.

Prepare to be pissed. Though I'm not confident NEO is strong enough for 1080p 60 in most titles unless they upgrade the cpu.

I'm already pissed. LOL. You're not confident games hitting 1080P/60FPS with Neo? If so, that kind of says to me, why do it?

Fair enough. I think maybe we are talking about two different things. All I'm saying Sony is apparently considering to different tiers of spec for Neo and as of now it still hasn't been fully decidedly. You seem to be saying it is too late make changes to try to compete with what whatever Microsoft is looking doing in late 2017. Where these two subjects intersect is with Sony choosing the higher tier spec in order to stay as competitive as possible power wise while also maintaining their own roadmap/timeline. Trying to match a product that is supposedly releasing a significant length of time after yours while making a profit is highly unlikely and not something Sony will pursue.

Yea I can't see it being announced at TGS, that would be.. odd. But if I were to mark it in the calendar, I'd say sometime in September. Unless they're gonna release Neo games earlier than I thought (Late September)

Could it happen that basic ps4 versions will decrease their standard actual quality because developers will have to focus (also) on a high end version of their softwares?

The Witcher 3 only runs at 30fps, often way below that. A more powerful console would help with framerate which makes a significant difference to gameplay. If devs are lazy they'll just increase resolution a bit and let it run at 60fps and call it a day, which I'd be more than happy with.

Common sense. PSVR is SIE's primary focus this year. PSX will be the best time to show the Neo. Not E3, where the focus should be on games/hardware priced and ready for release this year.

And how would that make sense according to the rumours we've heard so far?

That is the dev kits that are already in the hands of developers and the late September deadline for Neo compatible games. You think they have decided to wait till AFTER the holiday season is over to launch it instead?

If they choose the cheap option with jaguar then Neo will struggle with 60 FPS on some tough games for sure. If Sony splash out and add Zen then all will be fine IMO = Balanced power.

Personally, I want zen and will pay £ 450, once I can get 1080p60 for all games if developer gives option, I dont need anything more. 4-5 TF is enough for the GPU, the CPU is the concern (and bandwidth) imo

I have a 4K TV, and I can honestly say for gaming 1080p is more than good enough for me.

I would only want more power if VR takes off. Neo has a chance of getting to that level I desire very soon and will be good until ps5/6 whatever.

And I agree, I only play on console, I dont PC game. If Neo has cheap Jaguar I will consider moving to Scorpio and keep Ps4 for exclusives only.

That's not really how it works. The upgrade isn't going to be enough for the "Eye Candy" to be that much more. It's really just going to be a bit of a boost for reaching higher resolutions and frame rates.
I mean, think about the practicality of it. Since there's not going to be any "Neo" specific games, they're forced to make stuff that works on PS4 and most devs aren't going to want to go through a bunch of extra work when they can just unlock the frame rate and boost the resolution then call it a day.
Which is why I had to laugh at all the people thinking that the Horizon trailer was Neo footage. They're hugely overestimating what kind of visual performance the machine is going to provide.

I thought that at first when he said that in the past, but I seen people stating he said Gamescom in this very thread.

So I assume he updated. If so, then I stand corrected. TGS is still a hell to the no, lol.

Paris Games Week seems quite late. It's on the 27th to the 31st of October this year. So a conference would be at the earliest... the 26th?

It's very much possible that they could have the consoles out two-three weeks later, before Black Friday and the holiday shopping season starts. But still, late.

I say GamesCom as they have announced 2 PS3 redesigns there. It's a good time and it would be ready for the Christmas season. I say at the beginning of September just in time for Destiny.

Late August reveal.
Late September release.
Mitigates any possible hit at retail by ensuring a steady stream of product gets purchased both months.

If it's Paris Games Week instead, same release philosophy.
Announce it late one month. Release the next. So late October unveil for a Black Friday launch.

It is still a PS4, not a new platform. An enthusiasts version. It would be preferred timing for them. Your enthusiasts are the the initial early adopters who will sell this out in preorders anyhow.

I'm all for streaming...but it terms of overall quality, disc based entertainment is still the way to go...4k streaming is marginally better than a 1080p Bluray when you consider bitrates you're getting, but on the audio front it's no contest...

I agree and I would follow the same strategy if I were calling the shots, I'm just .. hmm.. anxious to see if they can pull it off. A global roll out in such short a time, that is.

I do, shrugs. If it is a movie/show I like I always get the disc.

This. Plus the best quality for movies/shows we like.

Also, it's obvious that the percentage of people who buy discs for better quality is not virtually non-existent like he says, even if streaming does very well too and is growing rapidly. And yeah I would imagine one of the reasons DVD still sells so well is that they are dirt cheap, and then since most blu-rays are combo packs I wonder if they probably count as both.

If Neo mode is not 60 FPS for most games, nobody is going to spend the extra cash on Neo are they, whats the point ?

I could put Money on MS bringing the power, no way will they be gimped again.

if you're expecting a ton of 60fps games on neo while 30fps on PS4, you're gonna be disappointed

you expect "neo mode" for games to be 60fps?

I expect them all to have 1080p resolution and maybe unlocked framerates. I also think that most multiplayer games will lock the framerates to whatever the PS4 can handle to stop people complaining of competitive advantages of the Neo.
However I DON'T think that it's a box that magically turns all games 60fps, no. And if you read what I said, that was never implied. However, I expect them to run smoother in general.

Same. I just wish they would make the SG1, 10 season box set in Bluray to replace the DVD one I have, sadly I do not think it will ever happen due to the old masters. However, I do notice the streaming quality has improved over the DVD versions (when I re-watched streams not too long ago) on some of the early seasons, as in, they made them widescreen with better fidelity vs. straight 4:3 rips, which I found odd they have not done so at a retail release as far as my knowledge.

Sony's Conferences at TGS are normally like 3am ET in the states...I don't see them revealing an upgraded system when one of their largest markets is asleep...

So yeah, I agree with you..

I wont be, because if the Neo is not capable then I would just switch to scorpio. If neo is gimped I dont see the point in upgrading. Pointless. Hello Phil...

And the types of games I buy, AAA big selling games, most are Frostbite or 60 FPS with adjustable resolution and as such will scale automatically or from acclaimed developers who would offer more.

The type of dev that may struggle would be the type of game I would not even care for anyway to be honest. The only game I have concern for is destiny 2 as Bungie are stubborn as hell..

Most 3rd party big games I buy are also on PC with those options, if they dont offer those options to console as well then to hell with them.

PSX.
And think PS4 Neo will be relased along Horizon or GoW IV next year.

MS would be insane to announce Xbox Scorpion at E3 if its not out til 2017. Would obviously harm Xbone sales.

But I suppose Xbone can't sell much worse.

I feel like sony could get away with just dropping a release window. They could say "Along side the PS4 we will be introducing the PS4k this fall. Details will follow at a later date." That is all it would take to manage a growing contingent of people caught in limbo on whether to upgrade from OG PS4 to Neo or people deciding to buy in on a vanilla PS4 or wait.

Well this certainly makes me a bit less excited for the Sony Conference. I really thought they would at least talk about it a little. Guess they will wait for an exclusive event. Similar to what they did with the PS4 reveal?

I guess it is smart to wait and see what MS shows and maybe adjust their strategy if they have to.
