NPD Sales Results for May 2016

Bit late to the thread, but I am guessing that Doom did a lot of its business in digital sales. It has already hit 586,436 copies sold on Steam according to SteamSpy. But glad to see it be such a huge success.

And GTAV sales will never die. God damn.

Doom?

Just between Steam sales and NA NPD it's already over 1.1 million sold through. That's a damn nice start and that's not accounting for retail in any of the other markets or console digital.

So yeah DOOM is doing very well for itself

SP games far from dead, face it Doom pretty much is MP is garbage. Ratchet did great as well. Rumours of another dishonored , Wolfenstein, Evil Within.

I think will sell less than Uncharted 4, if that is disappointing I guess it depends of people expectations.

Why would you think that?
3 sold over a million first month. 4 is being helmed by probably the best director the series has ever had.

What will likely be a new standard in visuals + Balrogs epic direction means if anything it will sell more than 3.

Batteries the CRISIS!
Another news i forgot to mention from aquamarine: :p

All Nintendo games sold under 35k this month, the bigger Nintendo game was Pokken Tournament.

Nintendo sales were -38% down MOM and 29% down YOY.

Sounds like StarFox Zero tanked after launch month ... dem impressions

I didn't know people believed there was no market for SP games anymore? However, I wouldn't doubt if Overwatch was #1 in that short amount of time if you include digital sales. PC gamers love Blizzard and it's mostly a digital platform.

People have been saying it yes, even publishers like ubisoft but that's not surprising they want to push online to sell DLC and micro transactions. There will always be a market for good SP games.

So with Doom Selling 525k in its first month alone, along with steamspy having it at 580k+ or so before deep discounts ( http://steamspy.com/app/379720 ) it should definitely get sequel since bethesda greenlit a Wolfe Sequel; which will be debuted this weekend at their press conference.

And you're not even accounting for NPD-region digital sales that aren't tracked. If you assume that digital sales account for 30 percent of total sales, it gets you to 830K. Plus, ROW sales. It's doing pretty damn well.

It's too early to say anything about GOW IV. It's going to be one of the most important game for Sony so we have to wait and see what happens ( marketing , focus , quality of the game itself etc ).

I don't think a sequel is in question. The game sold really well. It is basically DSIII from last month.

Oh I just want a rotating iD SP fps on an annual basis and it rotates like this: Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake. Everyone gets a 3 year dev cycle.

With both Wolfenstein and Doom doing well hopefully this ID other properties a shot at revival. Would love a Hexen game in today's age, want more fps games with rpg elements.

All the games in the top 10 have multiplayer, I don't get your point.

Challenge is can market growth match development cost increases, or will market embrace SP games done on a budget.

Sony has a bit more than 50% of the market, while it had more than 75% in those days. While Sony is doing very strong, it isn't at PS2 levels yet. That was a whole other level yet.
Yea it won't get back up to PS2 levels, I mean GTA was an exclusive back then lol. But if Neo is another success and MS doesn't gain any traction back outside of the U.S, Sony has a chance to creep back to 60% again.
I think Nintendo will go for a different audience again.

I expected Uncharted to break the million. It's a little disappointing, but I guess WW numbers will give no reason for sadness for Sony. Cutting out donut drake was a huge mistake.

God of War will do fine in NPD. It has god and war in the title.

The QB news from zhuge is tough. Whoever says that MS would be happy with the product is a strange person. Satisfied about my limerick.

MS really only has to gain the US and UK.

if sony coincides god of war with neo's launch it could be to the title's benefit

True.

DOOM: it will almost certainly get a sequel. Gonna pick up a copy within 3 weeks.

As for U4 - it will have looong legs like all Uncharted and ND games. It will end up with a pretty incredible sold through number.

I really don't understand how people expect Microsoft to "gain back" the US or the UK.

What you are suggesting when you say that is not only does Microsoft have to improve their sales well beyond what they currently are, but Sony has to stop selling, well anything.

We are now at 1.7m deficit in the US and at least 500,000 in the UK. A lead that has built up over 3 years.

What convinces people that at the point of a console generation where the hardcore matter much less, that new iterative models from Microsoft are not only going to overcome this deficit, but also neutralise the network effect of people buying consoles soley because that's where their friends are playing?

The only thing that has a chance to do this is a full generational reset. There is no way interative models, even ones 4* the power can do this.

Much like the PS3 last generation, once you fall behind far enough and more importantly, for long enough, there isn't any turning back. To put things into perspective, even holiday 2014, where Microsoft essentially had a fire sale, shrunk the gap in the US by 700k, would need to be repeated nearly 3 times over for Microsoft to "gain back" the US and UK.

Ratchet have MP? Doom has MP but come on.....it's bad and tacked on how many are really buying/playing it because of that? Evil Within, Dishonored, new wolfenstein are all rumoured to be coming and a new pray. A game having MP doesn't mean much when it's like Dooms.

Chamber

love on your sleeve
God of War 4 is going to do great. I don't doubt the quality that Cory/SSM will bring to the table and it'll likely be the flagship game showing off what Neo can do and thus will melt everyone's face off.

Unfortunately that's not true. Multiplayer means far too much these days.
I'm happy Doom is a success though.

Disagree, outside a few big titles MP in these games is dead after a week. People dedicate their MP time to a few big titles throughout the year. Doom would not have sold any different if it never had MP at all.

No problem with your opinion as I know shit.
Does one of our wizzards care to make an overview of best-selling titles where we can see how many of them have multiplayer? My belly says it's about 75%.

That has nothing to do with my point,k that SP games are not dead, that's all, I never said there are more of them then MP games.

Whats funny is I used to be a major member of that forum. We are talking loooots of posts. But I left there for here. And now vice versa is happening. Maybe I need to make a new account. There are some great people over there. GAF will always be my true home though

Let's do it the other way round. Take the biggest flops of this gen. They are mostly single player.
Of course a single player game can be successful, but it's getting harder and harder to convince people to fork out cash for an experience that is over in 6 to 8 hours.
It's saddening for me, too, as I nearly exclusively play single-player stuff, but it is how it is.

Asynchronous multiplayer is all the rage these days. Since Demons Souls we've seen a transition away from a split between single player and multiplayer to where both happen at the same time whether you think you're playing alone or not. Then combine that with joint world games like Destiny and The Division where single player is just multiplayer alone, it's pretty clear that single player only games are sort of an archaic aspect of gaming (which I love).

I think Ratchet has the benefit of being a very budget conscious game (it's an incredible sold and well balanced, concise game with no content bloat whatsoever) and a budget price that helped it overcome its purely single player status. The critical reception was a big help too.

Edit: the other solution publishers have used is open words which create content (and thus value) literally just out of space, where travelling to and from game activities actually becomes the game activity whether it's fun or not.

Gaf is usually a great place to post ( outside some topics like the new PS4 Neo one etc )

I haven't been there in quite a while so I have no idea what it's like now days. This was several years ago when I was active there.

2008 - 2010 were good times

Gaf is usually a great place to post ( outside some topics like the new PS4 Neo one etc )

Oh don't get me wrong I adore GAF. And yeah I bounced out of that particular thread quickly lol

Twilight Princess opened higher than Pokken, but Pokken seems to have better legs here.

I wonder how close it is 1 million WW.

Wait, the biggest Nintendo game was Pokken or biggest Wii U game? If Nintendo, then...that's almost surprising...

BeforeU

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
What surprises me most is that Minecraft sold more on PS4 than it did on Xbox One... is that usual?

Very very rare. Not usual at all lol infact PS4 Minecraft selling less than 360 version is normal. I guess this month was weird.

MS fucked up so bad from one generation to the next. PS3 had a rough start but recovered. Not sure where they go from here. I guess they are hoping the scorpio saves em.

It will depend on three things:
Will it be way cheaper than the Neo?
Will it be way more powerful than the Neo?
Will it release way earlier than the Neo?

You'll need at least two Yes for changing Xbox's luck at least in the US.

MS has to hope sony messes up for another 360 repeat. The world wide strangle hold is a huge advantage to sony.
