[Update: Phil Spencer says no 4K mandate, devs can make 1080p game with Scorpio]

...I don't understand this whatsoever, why would a 1080p TV not show the advantages of the Scorpio? Won't the games look/run better by default?

This is absolutely a non-story. There's no chance it'll do nothing for you if you're on 1080p. Even just a 4k output on 1080p looks noticeably crisper.

Phil's just trying to prevent owners which don't want to upgrade from feeling screwed.
Downsampling us not automatic, for instance if you run your PS4Bone games on a 720P set you won't get a 900P/1080P image dowsampled to 720P, nor would you get better performance because the game will render at 4K but the TV will only receive a 1080P signal. That support has to be built in.

instead of bringing better/more stable framerates to 1080p games, they bring sub 30fps games... BUT IN 4K!!!

Surely the only thing that stops this from improving 1080p games is that they've made that choice? If it can play current games at 4K then surely the resources are there for them to use on 1080p screens?

What he said here is plain wrong. Of course it can benefit someone using a 1080p TV. WTF MS you need to keep your messaging on point and consistent.

All we want are exclusive original games on a place we can't get or experience elsewhere. Stop diluting this with idiotic statements.

I think it is make sense because they seems very promise of 4K gaming from Xbox one games.

Easy to reach 4K with no improvement graphics, just upper resolution.

Spencer: There won't be Scorpio exclusive console games

"For you and I, we usually think about generations in terms of what games will it play?" Spencer told Eurogamer. "This thing will play Ryse: Son of Rome, a launch game for your Xbox One. And we'll have launch Scorpio games as well that are playable on an Xbox One, Xbox One S and Scorpio and look great on all three of them."

The Xbox boss also reiterated that "there won't be Scorpio exclusive console games. Absolutely not."

Still running a 1080p TV? Then you should forget about buying Xbox Scorpio.
That’s the message from Xbox boss Phil Spencer. He was asked by Eurogamer about the thinking behind announcing the new Xbox One S only to an hour later reveal a brand new machine, Xbox Scorpio.
“You should buy [the Xbox One S], because Scorpio is not going to do anything for you,” Spencer said after asking the reviewer what TV he had – in this instance a 1080p set. “Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don't have a 4K TV, the benefit we've designed for, you're not going to see."
“Clearly, you can buy Scorpio, and if and when you decide you want to buy a 4K television to take advantage of the increased performance, obviously the console will be ready for you. For us in the industry, it's easy to think that most power is always the thing that wins. If you look at last gen, what won? The Wii won. The Wii sold more than we did on Xbox 360 and the PS3, and it wasn't the most powerful console out there. Price is critically important. Wii was a good price and it had a great experience.
“Scorpio is for the person who's got a 4K television, who's really focused on 4K gaming. It's going to be a premium price over what we're selling this one for, and both of them will exist in the market at the same time. Scorpio is for your 4K gamer. And that's what we designed it for.”
It was speculated yesterday that while it seems Xbox Scorpio will have a quite significant power advantage over PS4 Neo, that advantage will come at a cost – that literally being the cost, which could be some $100 more than Sony’s new machine.

More tales from their arsehole. They knno nothing about the neo, nothing on pricing for either

Phil clearly means a price premium over his own products, ie Xbox One! FFS.

I wonder why he's coming out and saying this now, when before hand he's all "Oh it's up to the customers,we're just giving choice"

Maybe the slim is selling way below projections because of Scorpio? Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

A few days after E3:

"We've decided to put plans for Project Scorpio on hold until further notice to focus all of our gaming efforts on the Xbox One.

Please buy the One S."

So VR games are releasing for Xbone?

I don't give a shit about 4k, I just want the games to run at higher frames and/or have higher settings!

Unsold!

why? I swear to god if Sony goes the same route. I want 1080p 60fps with all the bells and whistels and not 4k with shitty fps.

700?! You are crazy if you think that. That would kill off the scorpio. It would be another ps3 situation. Don't know about 500 either.

400 isn't premium. The Xbox S is 400. A native 4K console can't be 400. Unless AMD wants to go bankrupt or something.

At this stage I'd rather the just announce that they fucked up making the Xbox One and are restarting the generation with Scorpio.

I don't want my games being the same as my original Xbox One which was subpar to begin with, I want something better.
Impossible due to the original PS4 now being the baseline. Designing for both systems from the ground up would divert the developers' resources too much.

I thought the Neo was the same? just 4K ps4.

Actually, no.

Here's the interesting, somewhat confusing thing (for some people) PS4 Neo isn't intended to be a PS4 that runs games at native 4K resolution. While it might not be impossible to have simple games bumped to 4K, for the most part Neo will render games at 1080p, at least that's the minimum resolution. But here's the good part, new PS4 games shipping in October have to have a Neo mode. That means many games will have better performance, possibly better visuals. Older PS4 games can be patched to take advantage of Neo's hardware, but that's up to each developer if they decide to update their old / older games.

WOW. Incredibly stupid move.

They are putting such incredibly big limmitation on what [expensive] Scorpio can do now. It will mostly render everything that Xbone and PS4 do, but only in 4K which is... whatever. It's a boost, but resolution dick weaving is not as important after "good antialiased 1080p" is achieved.

This laser focus on "4K-only" console is a mistake.

Ok so according the Spencer the "S" is aimed at those with 1080p tvs right?

Why are they emphasizing 4k video playback and HDR then lol (HDR is something only on 4k tvs anyway)

It's obvious that he's simply trying to do some sort of damage control, but maybe the best form of damage control would have been to simply deny the Scorpio officially until nearer the time, especially if it's not due until the holidays in 2017.

I would argue that the reason Phil is speaking about it is to monitor what happens online if people hate the idea/gets confused at the idea that this will only benefit if you have a 4k display they can change the messaging at E3 2017 whilst going dark from then till now.

There are probably no development guidelines in place yet for this device. So the fact they are stating no improvement - until Devs get back and say we aren't developing native 4k the. It will just be scaling that will do the 4k part.

jmaine_ph

With the UWP arent these games supposed to scale? When they said that were they only talking about framerate and resolution?

Now I'm wondering how big the audience is for

1. Owns 4K displays

2. Is ready to drop tons of cash for gaming

3. Doesn't want anything to do with PC gaming

Exactly. This looks like it's trying to target the PC enthusiast level of consumer, who well... will most likely opt for PC anyway?

seems like a pointless console to me then. no plans to buy a 4k tv, at least not until it's the standard and every game/movie/series is in 4k. even then i might not, cos i cant even tell the damn difference between 1080p and 4k from where im sitting (bad eyesight). i can very easily tell the difference in games though when devs use extra power for better framerate, bigger polycount, better animations etc..

i honestly dont know a single person with a 4k tv or anyone who even plans to buy one! i've thought they were a much bigger flop than 3d tvs... but MS must know better than my anecdotal evidence. still seems like a bizarre strategy and i cant see it working for them, especially if Scorpio is more expensive than Neo.

This really doesn't go in line at all with what those people said in the Scorpio introduction video. Oh and it said "most powerful console ever".....so all that power just for 4K?

How on earth are they even going to sell this to people during a new event next year if it's just a 4K benefit? Something is really wrong here.

1) Scorpio will have better frame rates, better graphical fidelity, VR support, 4k native resolution
2) Nahhh no point buying Scorpio unless you have a 4K TV

3) Scorpio might have exclusive games, it's up to developers
4) Scorpio won't have any exclusive games.

5) It's up to developers how to use the power
6) But it's only going to be a 4K resolution difference from original XB1.

7) Xbox Slim is slightly more powerful, Gears of War is taking advantage of extra power.
8) Xbox Slim isn't more powerful

Honestly what the fuck... MS should have their messaging on lockdown after 2013 but it's actually just as bad.

This doesn't even make sense. Even at 1080p you would benefit from a heavily downsampled image and thus incredibly much cleaner image quality.

For Scorpio to not have a 4K/1080p/720p toggle with variable IQ/effects based on your TV's resolution is pure idiocy. Sounds like Microsoft at the beginning of this gen. Have they learned nothing? This is like a no-brainer, seriously.

They're going to 180 this by the end of the week.

Yep, their games need a Scorpio mode, or owners of Scorpio will envy that the same Multi-platform game on a weaker PS4 Neo looks sooo much better in Neo-mode. Which apparently does more than "just" delivering higher framerates or resultion.
