I'll write more at some point I'm sure...

But it wasn't a terribly good movie. Poor storytelling technique abound. Cast wasn't utilized well.

Maybe a C- for me. The ~6.4 average feels about right.

Really? I hope none of these people laughed at the South Park episode about queefing or laughed at any fart joke in any comedy over the past several decades.

It's amusing to me that much of guy humor can revolve around dick, fart, and shit, but a queef joke is getting called out as much as it is in this Ghostbusters film.
South Park & Ghostbusters
Thats exactly the problem.

I think technically the first joke is about face bidets and anti-Irish fences.

Pretty much what everyone is saying, one youtuber said it was like watching 2 girls 1 cup.
Starts off ok then the shit comes.

A man using pornography as a frame of reference when discussing a movie led by women that he didn't like. There's gotta be something to the psychology of that concept.

I was ready to give the movie a fair shot. I don't care what gender the Ghostbusters are, I just want a good movie.

The first joke is very important for a movie. It sets the tone for what we can expect to see. It is the pickup line, the first kiss, all sorts of things like that.

The movie opened with a queef joke...

Fart and queef jokes are just so horrible. HORRIBLE.

So you wrote up that whole thing about how important the "first joke" is and somehow forgot that the "first" joke in question is a good 15-20 minutes into the movie, after many others?

Interesting enough he ain't the first, perhaps the first went straight over their heads.

I a Actually thought the best jokes in this (and the originals) are the ones that sort of fly by and you can miss them if your not paying attention.

The beginning of the new one is brilliant for that. The deadpan delivery is great. He's saying super funny shit during the tour but if you aren't paying attention you'll completely miss it. Similarly in GB2 there's a spot where Egon deadpan says "I'd like to examine the mother gynecologically."

I literally Lol'ed at that when researching it recently, but my kid just sat there oblivious.

In comparison the fart joke, the blowjob ghost, or the middle finger bit fall flat for me in comparison. They're just too on the nose and obvious for my personal taste.

I also thought Leslie Jones did a really good job of capturing that sort of humor. Her interaction with Rowan was hilarious, as well as trying to walk out of the concert with the ghost on her shoulders (and her ghosbusting on her own beforehand).

I'll agree with these, not my type of humor either. The movie didn't need them at all.

South Park & Ghostbusters
Thats exactly the problem.

Because the original Ghostbusters didn't have South Park-style jokes that alluded to blowjobs? Because "Dickless" isn't the type of insult Cartman would lob at someone in the show?

I don't know why one would assume being a Ghostbusters fan also means they're a fan of "guy humor."

I'm not assuming every Ghostbusters fan is a fan of "guy humor," but given that GB1 had a few jokes in there that were pretty low brow - and that jokes involving flatulence aren't exactly an anomaly in American comedy - I'm saying that I hope none of the people loudly protesting about a throw away joke have ever laughed at similar jokes in the dozens of male-starring comedies that have featured such jokes.

Or are we going to argue that Ghostbusters is a franchise that's always been comedy for the thinking man?

First tragedy, then farce.
Super liked the movie.

I felt that mostly the action scenes fell really flat. Like they tried to do slapstick like they did with Spy, but it didn't work with the CG as well as it did with live action.

I would have rather they cut the budget for that last scene (why in the holy fuck did they have to transport people back to 1920s time square? what was the fucking point of that? seemed like lots of unecessary CG at the end for a scene that mostly fell flat.

The dance off in the post credits worked out better as a gag. I would have preferred they do something there instead of the CG fest at the end. Kept it smaller. Felt like they were trying too hard with that whole final scene to throw in action and it both was not funny and wasn't a good action scene.

Yeah.

I actually enjoyed the final battle, but I don't think it was necessary - especially if it would have saved them 20 mil (or however much it would have cost).

Saw it, loved it, the online rage over a fart joke in the face of the original having:

  • Venkman leering at and outright hitting on a female student
  • Ray getting a blowjob from a ghost
  • Venkman bringing Thorazine on a date

...is a little confusing.

But what about the Terminator franchise? Terminator 2 alone made more than the first two Ghostbusters combined, and that's with an R rating. The franchise has over twice as many movies as Ghostbusters, so it hasn't been out of the public eye for nearly as long as Ghostbusters.
Terminator 3 happened and crippled the franchise in such way that the next movies tried to soft reboot the franchise instead of fixing the issues of the first three films.

No it didn't, it had sarcastic humour.
And I'll pretend you didn't compare the original Ghostbusters humour as South Park style humour and leave it at that.

I ain't even bothered by it, I love South Park and Films like Ted
But trying to make out it the same as the original to defend it is reaching, the original isn't even Adam Sandler comedy
It more in line with something you'd find in an episode of Stargate SG-1.
There a serious tone with a hint of comic relief
It's not 10 year old fart and fanny or dick jokes.
And I can't believe people are trying to make out....no sorry blatantly telling people it is same.

You don't have to pretend - I never said the humor was the same. I just said that a few of the jokes were low brow, lowest common denominator stuff - no different than one queef joke in the new one that keeps getting brought up.

The new one isn't 10 year old fart or dick jokes either. There's one queef joke in the film. If a ghostly blowjob isn't enough to deter your enjoyment of the first one, then one queef joke shouldn't be able to do the same for this one either. If you don't enjoy the comedy overall, that's fine. But the queef joke isn't indicative of the general style of humor in GB2016.

Does Jay hate everything? I mean the other guys are hating on it too but I feel like every Half in the Bag session is Jay bitching about everything. Even when Mike likes something Jay's like wuuut

He compares it to Pixels. Absolutely not.

I had a great time with this.
The ghosts/bad-guy were a non-element but the casting was perfection and the jokes really funny.
Sequel teaser at the end made me hyped for a sequel as the ghost element might become interesting again.

The RLM guys can be a little full of themselves sometimes, but they're usually on point. I do feel like the quality of their reviews has gone down over the years, (they put a lot more personal opinion in than actual analytical discussion) but I still enjoy them.

Even when they decide to throw 5 minutes on nonsensical story in.

It didn't help that they spent the CG Budget on turningTime Square back to the 80s (it wasn't the 20s lol) and then decided to obscure the whole thing like some Video Game random battle fight area complete with a cloud of mist obscuring the rest of the environment and preventing the GBs from leaving the battle area during the final like 5 minutes of the fight

I like Mike and Rich. Jay tends to be a little whiny sometimes, but I tend to agree with his opinions more and share his taste in movies.

I'm still baffled how Mike hated every single Roland Emmerich Movie but enjoyed ID2... but at least he admits he likes it because it was "schlock."

Damn, I basically completely forgot about that. It's like somewhere on the cutting room floor there's stuff tying the movie together.

She made a "Everyone should refuse to see this" video and said everyone paying for it would be to blame for a Back to the Future remake. I guess she went see it because she felt obligated.
If she actually said that then she's a fear mongering idiot because the creators of BTTF have been explicitly clear that no sequel, reboot, or remake can EVER happen while they are still alive. And you can bet that the moment they die, BTTF will be remade and it will have absolutely nothing to do with Ghostbusters at all.

Did you get to the movie 20 minutes late? There are literally dozens of jokes before the queef joke. The first jokes of the movie are actually very subtle jokes played straight, much like the original Ghostbusters! Which also had some extremely crass jokes in it as well as some kind of weird gang rape chant at the end. Imagine that!

Let me see how many I can remember off the top of my head that come before your panic attack about fart jokes.
Opening joke is about face bidets
Followed immediately by a joke about anti-irish fences
After that is a joke about enslaving elephants
We then get a sight gag to explain the falling candle
Lots of slapstick with Garrett trying to escape the house
Next up we're introduced to Erin and we get a gag where it looks like she's giving a lecture but there's actually nobody there
She tries to shake out her nerves and Ed Bagley Jr catches her
Jokes about how she didn't write the book despite her picture being in the dust jacket
Joke about the book being on audiobook but Ed doesn't need it because he knows how to read
Now we move on to introduce Abby, beginning with a joke about the delivery boy
Joke about the helmet Abby is wearing
Joke about her soup only having one wanton in it
Joke that it's even cut in half with no meat just a carrot
Introduction to Holtzman
Pretty sure there's a joke in here too but I don't remember it
THEN the fart joke.
So there are actually at least 15 jokes before the fart joke.

I agree with the CG.

It wasn't the 20s but it wasn't the 80s either. It wasn't made specifically clear but he brought back ghosts from every era. They turn the movie posters in the background into Taxi Driver (70s movie) and Isle of the Snake People (60s movie) there are ghosts from just about every era of American History in that sequence. Which makes sense given that the original plan for the bad guy was that he was a mass murderer and when he died he brought back the ghosts of every other mass murderer in American history.

It was okay imo, not really that funny but not particularly bad either. Basically it was perfectly average. I never laughed hard but it got a few smiles and chuckles out of me.

Just watched Comic Book Girl 19's review- she gives her immediate thoughts quickly, then goes beyond the film review to dig into the controversy surrounding it and where Sony went wrong with how they handled the marketing and hyping the troll war, essentially. It's a really solid video.

tl;dr she didn't like the movie at all.

It should be said that she is very critical and not a fan of easy entertainment that's just for fun. She didn't like Jurassic World either. She completely ripped apart the Game of Thrones big battle episode this season that everyone loved. I subscribe to her and like her because she is very critical, so she has interesting takes, but she is critical. Any remake would have to probably be both good and wildly different to get a positive review from her. They can't be going for something just to make money. She isn't going to tolerate a remake that is similar but inferior.

She made a "Everyone should refuse to see this" video and said everyone paying for it would be to blame for a Back to the Future remake. I guess she went see it because she felt obligated.

It's hard to tell what percentage of the down votes was sexism and which was because the video was horrendous.

Unsubbed to her quick a while back cause she's annoying.

But man lol she's a freaking dunce.

I've said before, the more folks talk about a Back to the Future remake, the more I want it. Travel back thirty+ years to the 80s or something. So much can be done.

I'm telling you movies are the only place where people lose their fucking minds over remakes. No one freaks out over covers of songs or remounts of plays but remake a movie and people go ape shit like it's the fucking apocalypse. Either just don't see them or give each one a chance on its own merits... either way shut the fuck up about remakes. They've been a thing for as long as movies have been a thing, nothing is thst sacred and that's a good thing. This idea that remakes are what an affront to your geekdom or something is so very very very sad.

It's telling that this animosity really heated up when 4 women got to be the stars. I also think it's no coincidence that the people who wanted this to be a watershed movement against remakes/reboots are among those who most downplay the sheer amount of sexism that came as a response to it and go after Feig for daring to respond. These are the people who address the sexism not to condemn the sexism but to rile up anti-reboot sentiment by insinuating that Feig and Sony are calling everyone sexist and attacking fans. It's fucking nonsense.

Anti-reboot people were never going to like this movie and were never going to give it a chance. That's fine but they should be honest about it and shouldn't resort to fear mongering about Back to the Future, or dismissing people who liked the film as to scared to admit they hated it.

I'm more confused about her as she made a video Bascially saying "don't watch it" but then watched it herself.

She's adding to the problem of more remakes being made but shrug

Agreed on all counts. I don't really understand why anyone is waiting to reboot BTTF though when they can simply make a time travel movie whenever they want. I mean they could literally remake BTTF in everything but name and people would just be like "Why did they even do this when they could have put the BTTF name on it since that's what it's obviously trying to be" (aka the opposite of Ghostbusters "why didn't they just make this movie without the Ghostbuster name" can't win can you!?!)

I'd love to see a spiritual successor or sequel to BTTF using today's technology and going back to the 80s. I feel like a movie like that would probably do pretty well too because 1) it'll scratch the BTTF itch and 2) all the 80s kids are adults now and nostalgic for their childhood. It's not like BTTF owns the time travel concept.

I'll hopefully be watching this film sometime this week. I am expecting it to fall short of the original but to be much better than the shitty second film. If Ghostbusters was a sacred cow it was slain back in the 80s and anyone claiming that the vitriol against this film is down to an anti-remake backlash rather than misogyny is being disingenuous.

Funny to see the top rated comments in CBG19's video. If you lie down with dogs...

Also after Zero Time Dilemma and a certain conversation in that game, hell yes, give me another Back to the Future!

And it's not like every movie in the series are classics either. 2 and 3 are alright but they aren't close to one in quality.

That's my favorite thing I think, people get all freaked out about corporate cash ins when usually the sequels teeter on that to begin with.

Ah, so THAT'S why that post is so upvoted on the subreddit.

She could literally be their poster child.

She hits all the talking points, right down to there wasn't that much sexism Sony just made it up and everyone actually hates this movie they're just too afraid of the real harassers, it's hillarious.

Meanwhile Leslie Jones is getting driven off twitter but sure it's not sexism or racism, people just don't want reboots. Fuck off

BTTF remake is going to happen guys and it'll be your fault.

BTTF would never ever do anything like sellout and merchandise like other movies.
