CDPR would love Xbox One+PS4 cross play for Gwent, just waiting on Sony

So what's the excuse this time for Sony?

It would be cool for them to do it but... why do they need an excuse? They have no reason to allow this to happen considering they are the market leader. They don't really have anything to gain from this besides squashing potential Twitter/GAF/Reddit angst.

I think it's too soon to allow this. They should start with rocket league and see if it hurts sales in any way. They have every right to refuse this, you have every right to be salty about it.

Time to see what Sony thinks.

I remember reading how this could affect sales by keeping people on Xbox since they can play with their friends who only own a PS4. So, if someone planned on getting a PS4 to play multi with their friends, and they own an Xbox One, they wouldn't have to.

Interested to see how this all pans out. Before someone calls me crazy, Microsoft has less to lose and more to gain from this. It could help prevent some people from buying into another ecosystem (PS4)

Too bad there's no reason for Sony to accept cross-play considering the position they're in.
If its ever going to happen this is the best timing for it to happen particularly with something like RL and Gwent - in all honesty its more likely to happen with Sony in the position they are in rather than if the roles were reversed.

So is the narrative going to change now from "Sony has always been open to it, MS was the hold-up" to "Sony is the market leader and they don't need to do it and no benefit to do so"

Just want to make sure I'm up to date

Sounds like you got it right. :|

I think cross platform play makes sense for some games (Gwent for sure, since it's 1v1) but plenty of other games I could just see it creating weirdness. Like playing with, but not being able to view profiles, message, group up, become friends, or perform any OS-specific function unless Sony and Microsoft cooperated in a meaningful way to support cross platform play, which I don't think either of them have any intention to.

Does Sony even have a reason to do this? Isn't this like giving up the advantage of a larger userbase in competitive games? They would basically be giving xbox access to a larger playerbase which can be considered a selling point of their own console.

They don't, but they've already said they're all for cross-platform play so they'd look really disingenuous if they flip flop on this one. Especially considering their 4ThePlayers schtick. Barring any legitimate reasons of course like some unfair burden (between MS and Sony) it puts on them or something.

Pretty much.

Obviously Microsoft will keep talking about cross-play as there are only advantages for them in it, and people will get mad at Sony for not opening up.

If they don't do it, it will only make XBL and PC more appealing, while PSN less. I could now play with my friends on Xbone and vice versa. Why would I ever want a game on PSN over that option? Even more now that MS has taking a stronger initiative with cross play for PC and how PC has been gaining greater traction.

Their benefit is not being left with their dick out when it comes to these titles like Rocket League, Gwent, and so forth. It could also benefit them too, where gamers now will become more invested into their console.

I think Sony will give in and agree soon - especially since in the past they were saying they would, but MS wouldn't.

I wonder if they simply thought that MS never would agree?

If this continues, they will pretty much have to go ahead and let it happen.

Of course, I'm still waiting for my PS4 to allow external drives to actually install and play games, so maybe not.

Sony could benefit from cross play, think about the online population of Hardware rival, Guns up and Killstrain.

Which thread did the "Ball's in your court, Sony" originate from? (not the Sony one, but the one that is being mocked / referenced..)

How about being the good guy?

There already is cross platform play for Rocket League on PC and PS4.

PS4 already does cross play with PC.

Funny how this is being spun against Sony. MS knew this was going to happen.

Not that I am shooting down cross play. If it comes, which it more than likely will, then great.

But this is as disingenuous as attacking MSFT's "Play Anywhere" slogan.

But at this point what is the spin? Rocket League works on PS4 and PC, on XB1 and PC, and now they want it to go between XB1 and PS4. Microsoft says okay, Sony hasn't yet. CDPR is the same story with Gwent. What is being spun?

Except for the fact that Rocket League has had cross-play between PC and PSN since day 1, just like Final Fantasy XIV, for example.

Cmon now Sony fans on here blasted MS for a long time for their stance on cross-play and that Sony was always welcoming with open arms; you had to know ithis was coming

I think Sony will do it but this thread should be fun for awhile.

The FF14 devs already commented on it and MS is still throwing stones in their way with unnecessary rules.

On a serious note, what rules are there now? Has there been an update on this after MS said they would finally allow cross-play?

The poster I responded to said XB1 will be more appealing if Sony says no to this. But PS4 already does cross play so nothing will change.

Oh dam! This would be really cool. Hope Sony does the right thing here.
I don't get this whole "ball is in your court Sony". I think the whole cross play notion is cool in the mind of the average Joe, but from the perspective of a game console company, it is dumb.

The whole point of these consoles is to get you into their ecosystem. Why on Earth would the market leader want to disincentivize people from buying their console? From getting those that made the mistake of buying the "other" platform to want to buy their console so they can be where everyone else is?

I doubt MS would be cool with cross play if they were dominating the market.

Yeah, but it looks a lot worse when previously Sony was saying that they were open to it, but MS wouldn't agree. It would look pretty bad to suddenly say "oh, we changed or mind" or "we were kidding!". lol

LewieP's post from the Rocket League cross-network play thread yesterday:

...

At a policy and ideological level Sony have been open to this for far longer than MS.

People suggesting that the ball was in Sony's court were implying that they had been the one holding it up all these years, when it was clearly Microsoft.

Read the actual quotes here. Sony have already said they will allow this, but there are a variety of technical details they need to ensure they've accounted for.

When Microsoft made the decision to no longer forbid cross platform multiplayer, they had time to get their policies and procedures in place before announcing it, now Sony is doing the same. But Sony were always in principal open to cross-platform play.

So yeah, who knows, maybe it should have been up and running all along, maybe they're working on it *right now* but are encountering problems. We shall have to wait and see.

I really wish this was a thing last gen so I could still play bad company 2 in full lobbies, tried playing about a month ago or so and it was mostly dead. Just conquest with max 8 players in total, was pretty shit. Soony needs to jump on this, as do other companies to maximize the online population of games.

Yep. They got their policies in place ahead of time. Even Rocket League was delayed for months for cross play with the PC until it was finalized on MSFT's end... they claim they are doing this for the gamers, yet announce cross play for all platforms and consoles, without speaking to other console makers first? Knowing how long it takes to do the policies and procedures?

Does not sound like typical 'handshake' business sense if they was your true goal. A PR move which could have been avoided (internet bitching) if you reached out during that time of doing your own policies. They knew what they were doing.

Your move Kaz!

He can't even keep his Twitter account away from xbox fans, you expect him to let those people into his console network?

lol

Will be surprised if it doesn't come later on, could be just focusing on getting consoles out first because there's no real card game competitor in that space.

That's the next step I'd say, once Sony sorts it out we'll start seeing things like this. Cross platform parties will happen at some point I'm sure, just need to get over this first hurdle before we get to that IMO. EA, Ubisosft and Blizzard already have their own account systems they just have to integrate it directly into the game. Smaller/indie devs might have a problem there but a cheap workaround would be to just have a key-locked party system (enter name/ID of party, enter key set by party host, then you're in party). I do think it'll come though
I don't see this ever happening

i agree its a bit of a cheap shot but its just more of an annoyance of how Sony is drifting from there original message. When launching the PS4 there stance was that they would be pro consumer and do everything in the vein of " for the player" but since reclaiming the market leader position they have quickly shifted to shut out services that would be great on my PS4.

Have they shown any gameplay from this yet?

I know it's supposed to be more robust than simply, "extract Gwent from TW3 and sell it as a standalone, multiplayer title," with a story mode, quests, and the like. Any details on this yet?
