There are tons of new assets shown in the trailer.

There's a ton of new assets in that trailer.

I'm glad Sonic has a chance to finally get a decent faux-retro game to stand up alongside the likes of Mega Man 9, Fantasy Zone II DX (yeah, that's a remake, but it might as well be a new game) and Castlevania ReBirth.

I would have just rather they try and do a proper new 2.5D game and not fuck it up like they did Sonic 4.

The physics on this seem 100% spot on (which they would be given the context) so why not take that - the most important aspect of a Sonic 2D game, and put it into a 2.5D game?

Eh, either way, I'd say I'll be buying this.

As a gamer who's not big into Sonic aside from the Adventure titles, why is this a big deal? Didn't Sega do this with the episodic content and it failed miserably? How is this different?
It's different because Christian Whitehead already has proven reputation with 2D Sonic games; as he worked on the phenomenal ports of Sonic1, Sonic 2 and Sonic CD. His involvement shows that Sega is serious about nailing the 2D gameplay mechanics with Sonic Mania.

They were recreated in the Retro Engine, IIRC. So they weren't exactly "ports".

Well yeah, but they weren't new level designs and mechanics and bosses. They were already good Sonic games just remade/ported/put on a new engine. I'm just worried that it will have the look and feel of a classic game but bad level designs and bosses like the Sonic 4 games, the last attempt at 2D Sonic.

Guarantee you a 2.5D game would be met with groans at this point in time. It's associated with trash.

The trailer made me incredibly happy and teary eye'd. This is going to be a day one for me no question about it, just looks so great.

Pixel art? :(

Couldn't we get HD sprites or vectors or something? Why are 2D games always relegated to this? Unlike a lot of indies, Sega has the budget.

This is about as "high budget" as pixel art gets. Super detailed, super fluid animation. Pixel art does not mean cheap.

Oh wow, I completely forgot about Amiibo.

There's pretty much no way this isn't coming to NX with Amiibo support.

In fact, if this is an NX launch title, I'll place bets right now that it's by far the best selling retail SKU.
I'd be shocked if they don't use the Sonic Amiibo for the likely NX version in some way (maybe to unlock Modern skins for the playable characters). Same for whatever Sonic Team is working on.

The game looks great. Also, that title screen animation is mesmerizing.

I really hope Sonic Mania will become such a huge success that SEGA decides to resurrect some of their neglected series (Streets Of Rage, Golden Axe, Shinobi, etc.) in a similar manner.

- Because it's not made by Sega
- It's made by a guy who did better ports of their Classic games than Sega did
- It looks like a Genesis game
- No Shitty friends (yet)
- No talking (yet)
- Sonic isn't an NBA center (might be a power-up)

I'd say it's more 32x with how excellent the animations and colors look.

All the talk about will they/won't they on NX is so tiresome.

Buy some other consoles kids, damn.

Looks fucking fantastic. Pre-order where?

This is the absolute best route I'd say. It looks fantastic, IMO. Anything else (which, IMO those routes are ugly) won't actually do what they are setting out to do, which is recapture the love from fans who played the original 16-bit releases that looked like this.

As a gamer who's not big into Sonic aside from the Adventure titles, why is this a big deal? Didn't Sega do this with the episodic content and it failed miserably? How is this different?

Sonic 4 used ugly pre-rendered visuals, physics that were not only not faithful to the Genesis games at all, but just completely busted all around, and was farmed out to a developer that's mostly put out middling handheld Sonic titles, the best of which have a completely different design philosophy from the Genesis games.

Sonic Mania's being built by the people responsible for the excellent mobile ports of Sonic 1, 2 and CD (The latter of which also got a fantastic HD port), uses faithful looking 2D spritework, and is pretty much being designed by people that have pretty much disassembled the original Genesis games back to front. They're probably the best possible people to have making this short of reassembling the original development team for the Genesis titles. (Which is never happening.)

Hidden Palace in Sonic 2 mobile was actually mostly original level design outside of the first area of the level. Had a new boss fight, too. Was a generally inoffensive level from a design standpoint, all things considered.

I'm not doubting the quality of the artwork. I'm just soooo tired of pixel art in general.

The only reason I brought up money is because whenever I ask why there aren't more games with high resolution 2D artwork, "budget" is the most commonly cited reason.

Yea, despite the background of Taxman and Stealth, this is not a ROMhack, this is actually using new assets.

That Popcorn Machine reference actually has me giddy.

This is what Sonic 4 should've been. Glad Christian Whitehead is getting a project like this, and cool that the MajorMagnet devs are on it in some capacity I like them

Music in the trailer was spectacular.

I want to try and get a Streets of Rage spiritual successor off the ground just to get an excuse to allow these guys to make the music for it.

that puzzling face

I think of special mention is the all-new Hidden Palace in S2 Remaster being a showing of original content too.

But you see sonic will sell better with Nintendo thi must be know over and over again.

Tired if the nx speculation as well. It actually getting announced would probably help with the situation

I can personally vouch that Taxman and Stealth are slavishly devoted fans of the original games and that at least Stealth knows the entire classic Sonic engine like the back of his hand.

Questions about level design and style aside, these are guys who will definitely bring the right structure and design ethos to a classic Sonic game.

Eww. Even the good Mario World hacks are mediocre at best.

Id take a retail release from the dude who made kaizo Mario.

Also that hack by the guy who made the Mario world level editor was pretty sick!

They don't need to. There's already Super Mario Maker for amazing fanmade stages.

That's what I'm saying. Hire the best level designers who made sick Mario maker stages, let them make a full 8 world 2d Mario with Mario world physics and even prettier graphics.

Shit would be awesome. They've done fucking worse with the Mario IP lol

I think it's silly to think that Sonic Mania will not be on the NX, the console has yet to be official unveiled or even have a proper name. Whenever it is, then it's reasonable to question it.

SEGA and Nintendo have a pretty close relationships so odds are it is coming to the NX in due time.
