Xbox One S Thread: The S is for Sexy

Has anyone found any information on when/if all of the controllers will support Bluetooth?

It looks like the Gears of War one definitely will but what about a standard black controller? Any info or release dates?

got mine but have to transfer all my games over from my old external drive, going to take a while.

Saw one in person, it's really small and very pretty. I'm impressed. Only disappointment is the rubberized back on the new controller. It's barely noticeable.

Anyone else order the 500gb from GameStop.co.uk for £229? Mine still says "Confirmed" but there's been no updates, so I presume that's because there's no official EU release dates, rather than it just being canned. It was weird that it was listed and then removed, even though the 2TB stayed up.
Hi bud. I have, yeah I was thinking the same, I went on the logic that the 500GB was removed as they had gone through their allotted stock but that was before the official dates were confirmed. Hoping for news this week as at that price it's a great deal even if selling only XB as part payment.

This thing is sooooo nice. Very surprised how small it is in person, 4K streaming playback, and The Revenant in 4K is stunning. My TV doesn't support HDR (it's an older model) but it's still stunning. UHD Blu-ray has impeccable detail. Totally worth it.

For those getting the One S, can you please try to sync the controller to your PC/laptop with Bluetooth and tell me if you power on the controller if it also powers on the Xbox One system?

My PC is in another room from my Xbox One so I'm wondering if I press power on the controller if I can just power the controller on to use it on my PC without it powering the Xbox on at the same time.

Just to make sure...this applies to all vizio lines because I have the M series. Gonna go home later and tweak some things before I get the 500gb One S!
It applies to any Vizio that has FALD powering the backlight, which yours should, given all the information so far.

Straight from their website...

Full Specification 4K Ultra HD Compatibility

In addition to handling 4K Ultra HD 3840x2160 resolution, the AVR-S910W also features HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Wide Color Gamut compatibility, key components of the BT.2020 4K Ultra HD video specification.

Oh! The AVR. My bad. I thought you were talking about the HDTV, which does not accept HDR.

Like the new controller more than the old. The sticks are still too lose for me (feel the same as the old one), but LB/RB are SO much better to press :D

Added a specifications and performance section to reflect today's news:

Specifications and performance improvements:

Due to the embargo lifted on August 2nd, we have just learned a lot more about the Xbox One S' internals. Digital Foundry has released an in-depth article regarding this topic, and they also have a tech interview with Albert Penello, senior director of product marketing and planning.

Digital Foundry - Xbox One S performance boost revealed
(YouTube) Digital Foundry - Xbox One S GPU Overclock! Do Games Run Faster?
Digital Foundry - Tech Interview: Inside Xbox One S

Quick rundown:
SoC - 16nm FinFET (reduced power usage and temperatures, shrinked from 28nm)
GPU - 1.4TF, overclock to 914 MHz from 853 MHz (resulting in framerate per second gains in some titles that are GPU-bound); for games with unlocked framerate, there could be a difference of +5-10 fps in GPU-bound scenarios, for games with a capped framerate (30fps/60fps), the target fps is more stable, can result in less tearing and less frametime issues.
ESRAM - due to the GPU overclock, ESRAM is now at 219 GB/s, up from the 204 GB/s
PSU - less overall power consumption, ~30 W less on average
Noise - an increase of ~3 decibels on average

Digital Foundry: There was some confusion at E3 about faster hardware in the Xbox One S to enable 4K and HDR. This says to us that you've either tweaked CPU/GPU clocks or unlocked the deactivated compute units on the GPU. What is actually happening there?

Albert Penello: This is a great question. In the hectic environment of E3 it's not always possible to get into the level of detail necessary to give a complete answer. We stated that the SoC is the same as Xbox One while giving developers access to more power for HDR. The key is that we did not want customers to expect any change in game performance for existing titles. This has caused people to ask more detailed questions which I'm glad we have time to get into. The SoC in Xbox One is the same design as the previous processor. Same GPU, same number of CUs, same memory, same CPU.

As we discussed, we did make some refinements for 4K support and to fit in the new chassis. We also used this opportunity to increase the GPU frequency from 853 MHz to 914 MHz. By making this change, developers creating HDR titles do not have to incur any performance hit. We also decided to make the extra six per cent available to all titles. So some games (ones that utilise dynamic resolution and/or unlocked framerates) may see a very minor performance improvement. Our testing internally has shown this to be pretty minor, and is only measurable on certain games, so we didn't want to make it a “selling point” for the new console.
Digital Foundry: From a software perspective, can you outline what 4K and HDR media support we can expect from Xbox One S on day one and what else may be in the pipeline?

Albert Penello: Beyond what we announced at E3, there is nothing new I can talk about now. But you should expect to see a number of media apps and games announced shortly. In addition, I know some fans have asked for new audio functionality including bitstream support and we're evaluating that as a possible feature in a future update.

S is for Sexy indeed.

Is this your first Xbox One? Regardless, can you press the "Xbox" logo button on the controller and tell me how it feels? On the current controller, that button feels a bit like mush. I'm hoping they changed it a bit on the new one. Thanks!

I already have 2 Xbox Ones but damn I am probably going to get this even though I am sure I will barely notice any difference with the games but I love anything new regarding the Xbox.... I have a external hard drive so I will probably just wait for the $299 model later in the month plus it comes with both Halos which I do not have so a pretty nice deal.

Really helpfull and going to watch the video and read the site before purcasing my next tv!

Sorry for late reply to all here, but I am happy it helped and thanks. Do ask if you need anymore advice.

This is the kinda of thing I've been looking for. Thanks.

Great, good to hear.

Obviously

-- well, most likely the Xbox One will be set to your output resolution do it all for you, not your TV

Cool video/ nice voice

edit: although, is it not a litttttle bit misleading to show PS4 footage while explaining HDR? ah okay, the video itself doesn't match what's on screen a bunch. constructive criticism? =P
Footage is just mixed up as you noted but yes not intended to confuse. And thanks glad you liked the video and my voice :)

I've only watched the HDR part of this video but you're glossing over and confusing certain elements in your video. For example the UHD Premium branding is separate from being HDR capable and such a TV can advertise itself as HDR capable without supporting 90% of the P3 colour spectrum.
Sorry for delay in reply, NO UHD Premium brand is ALL about the HDR elements and not just the resolution.

Yes a TV can show HDR as a feature but it cannot show the Ultra HD premium badge unless it falls into the 90% range as I cover in the video.

I do also cover the games in another article to keep split for easier digestion.

What areas do you think i glossed over on? appreciate the feedback.
I have questions. Is HDR something you toggle on a 4K HDR capable television? Is it like game mode which you have to choose? Does the tv automatically detect an HDR source and enable the mode itself?

Does HDR have any effect on input lag? For example I always play on game mode on my tv and would do the same in a future 4K HDR set. Would I have to toggle HDR on within game mode?

Lots of questions I know. Also keep up the awesome work on your YT channel.

Firstly sorry for delay and thanks for the kind comments. Good questions, yes the TV will have a HDR mode that can be turned on, sometimes in the colour section.

As for LAG it should not effect it any more than other options and I am currently trying to arrange a group of UHD TV's to test and this will include latency. I would say that at the moment there is room for improvement on ones that I have tested.

Thanks

Mine arrived today

it's a really good looking console, so much better than the huge VCR that was the old ONE. Didn't expect a performance bump for games that are already out, so that's a nice surprise as well.

Has anyone tested if 4k+HDR works with the cable that comes with the console?

Trojita

Rapid Response Threadmaker

I might just because I never opened it and I don't think I could convince myself to buy a second one. Though this system does looks super sleek and I love the white even though I'd love to have the Gears Red (though would love it without the cog thing).

I wonder what the perofrmance difference is between the hybrid drive in the elite vs. the disk drive in the S + slightly different specs.

Yes. Even the cable that came with the original Xbox One works.

Its not I had a launch console up until two months ago. This feels more like a button of that makes sense. The old one kind of just pushed in without any feeling. I'd say this is improved on that regard.

Please can someone help me with this.

The stand isn't going all the way in and I'm using way too much force.

There is an overhang and the console wobbles slightly.

This can't be right can it?

That's correct. I didn't claim otherwise, although looking back at my post I can see how it might seem like I did considering how I formulated it

Your video seems to suggest that in order to feature HDR you need to support 90% of the P3 colour range as required the UHD premium badge. Hence my reply ;) Specifically at 8:30 in the video.
I do also cover the games in another article to keep split for easier digestion.

To keep things clearer I'd have kept the UHD premium badge out of the HDR talk and included it as a separate topic in the video just like the other topics. Now you're talking about HDR, HDR10, Dolby Vision and the UHD premium badge without any logical order in it and jumping between them. I'd start with HDR what it, explain it, and then mention the two competing standards and how they differ. After all that I'd start talking about the UHD premium badge and how the HDR requirements for it.

Disclaimer: I've only watched the HDR part.

Still pretty mushy.

Thanks for the replies! I'm kind of bummed that it isn't dramatically improved, but I'll take anything. Might go pick up one of the new controllers tomorrow as I just bought my (latest) Xbox One in May.

Uhhhhhhh

When I turned the console on and updated, it asked me if I wanted to switch to 4K so I did. I download the Blu-ray player (I still think it's funny this has to be downloaded), pop in Mad Max and get presented with this. Anyone know what's up?

Fucking fuming. Absolutely fuming. Finaly used an unhuman amount of strength to get the stand in, but then unpeel the sticker at the disk tray and there is a fucking mark that won't come off right underneath it.

Left work early for this after pre ordering 2 months ago my store is sold out.

I swear to god this type of shit happens to me every fucking time i buy something.

The options screen will tell you exactly what 4K video your setup does and doesn't support. It'll look something like this, taken from my review at Ars Technica: https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/IMG_1133.jpg

Did you turn on HDR on the TV HMDI port?

Before I did with my LG OLED, the Xbox S display setting said all kinds of stuff wasn't supported on my TV. After I turned it on, everything had green check marks.

mister clean magic eraser right on that spot you'll never see it again.

I'm re-installing all my games on the S. When I got to Quantum Break it says "This app will not work on your device".. WTF?

Edit: Same thing happened with KI. Turns out it only happens when trying to install from a pin. It takes you to the PC version of the game in the store. You can still install these games by going to my games and "Ready to install."

Try Mr. Clean "Magic Eraser" but be very careful, try to just rub the spot. (edit) Beaten...but seriously Magic Eraser all the way

There's often a setting for the 4k/HDR HDMI port specifically that you can enable/disable, and many older 4k TVs shipped with incomplete firmware, and can be upgraded to map to new standards, so check both of those first.

Otherwise

Thanks for the advice with the Mr Clean but I'd probably end up pouring it in to the disc tray or something. Still upset but I'm just going to leave it as I'll probably get a Scorpio next year.

Mark and stand aside this is a pretty beautiful console :) now just on to the updates and downloading my library!

I just looked and my screen is exactly like yours. So my TV displays 4K but I can't watch 4K Blu-rays? I'm just confused at the moment, sorry if these are dumb questions.
What TV are you using and have you enabled deep colour?
