Yeah, cause them mentioning that it is extremely unlikely that you will run into another player is them advertising the game as a multiplayer game. If 90% of the reason you bought this game is the very small possibility you will run into another player then you need to learn how to spend your money in a better way.

Even though, this means that players COULD meet in-game, what apparently doesn't happen. Also, that information lead to believe getting at the same location is really, really, really hard... and apparently it is not.... not at all.

Just a noob question from someone here who might have experience or knowledge on game development.

If the FOV is not that zoomed in, where would the weapon position be? and if it's farther from the character's point of view, would the character model's hands be exposed?

The fact that no character model is being rendered behind the visible camera doesn't mean that the player would have no character model if seen externally. There are a lot of games that only render floating arms, and if you back out to third person they switch to a completely different character model. Skyrim does this for one.

Half the people in this thread just want Sean or someone to just tell us the truth about how the multiplayer works.

The other half thinks this is hyperbole, that we are ganging up on the Devs, that this is a gamer gate witch hunt, or that it just doesn't matter because who cares about multiplayer.

To be fair, you left out the people already forcefully painting Sean as a liar and/or Molyneux-level huckster. But hey, thisisneogaf.

Mercilessly attacking Sean Murray's personal integrity when we don't have all the facts or an official response is pretty insensitive.

"integrity"

He is a person who is out to get money, he makes a product and people pay for it. He isn't your buddy and he doesn't care at all about you past paying for his game. If the consumers are annoyed because he misrepresented the game they are in the fully in the right to attack his "integrity". If they just failed to do their research though then it's just on them.

Oh grow up. Sean has had months to say how this works but he chose Pr and low probabilities instead. He should yell at the statistics guy since they probably assumed we wouldn't figure this out for a few weeks atleast.

In a blog post on Monday, he said, "If you hoped for things like PvP multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilizations… that isn't what NMS is. Over time it might become some of those things through updates."

Two of those things, freights and base-building, are on the way. The recent reveal of the game's big launch update revealed those features and some visual enhancements are "next up."

I feel like if it's not in the game now, it will get it at a later time. He has referenced patching in several interviews as a method to change the game in significant ways. It does seem a little misleading to say it has multiplayer and not include it at launch, but he also didn't technically lie if Hello Games intends to patch it in at a later time (maybe as soon as the PC release). I would't start to question the validity of Sean's statements until after the PC launch and all the cards are on the table. Plus, that gives him a few days to clarify some of the major questions people might have.

Even though, this means that players COULD meet in-game, what apparently doesn't happen. Also, that information lead to believe getting at the same location is really, really, really hard... and apparently it is not.... not at all.

I'll try to illustrate this again...let's say instead of a 3D sphere galaxy, it's a 2D game on a plane.

X9JPUHL.png

The left picture is all planets in the game, 18 quintillion. The right picture is all planets where you can actually spawn, since everyone starts far from the center of the galaxy. Then you eliminate more of those for being too hostile for new players etc. and before you know it, your million players are spawning within 100 planets of each other, and some lucky ones within 10 or 20.

We have 1 instance, 1 shred of evidence, we're not even sure how the system works, why are the time of days different for both those individuals, could it be server issues, could he have lied. My point is we don't know right now, but a lot of us are talking in absolutes. The only thing that can be absolutely said is that last sentence of yours and I agree, it's weird that they were able to find the same planet so close to launch.

But to the original point, paying 60 dollars for a game where 90% of the reason you bought it is that you could possibly, maybe, at some point in a bunch of hours, meet up with another player is not very smart.

The more he speaks the more the game sounds like a $60 Early Access game, with all his "yeah, I might put this or that in" talk.

Yes, that's true.
But my point is, it's possible that they currently did not implement any character models.

That's why there is no 3rd person perspective, The close fov, no hands 3d model, the player entering the ship animation, the no hands on the cockpit controls and because The players won't be seeing each other anyway, what's the point of adding this feature.

You know what I hate about posts like these they always ignore the other side of the hyperbole
But....I didn't. I said it's ok to be invested in the game and it seems pretty great....which is completely contrary to the contingent on here that seems to want to hate it no matter what. I fully acknowledge that. Fact remains that the dev has stated MULTIPLE TIMES that multiplayer was in. With the little caveat that the game is just soooooo biiiiigggg that you'll probably never encounter another player.

What they failed to anticipate is that redditors, like redditors ALWAYS FUCKING DO, managed to land in the same location at the same time within HOURS of play and confirm that the developer is, in fact, a god damn liar lol. Of course that's barring the extremely unlikely scenario that they just haven't gotten around to implementing multiplayer or other technical issues. I'm pretty eagerly awaiting a statement from the dev here, because honestly I won't be buying this without multiplayer. I know, I know that's not the selling point for the game. For you. For me, however it is. I pretty much exclusively play multiplayer games these days, it was a promised feature, game will be significantly less cool for me without the chance of random player encounters and If it's not in then neither am I. This is why I never pre order. It shouldn't take the Reddit investigation squad to confirm that a promised feature is absent from the game, they should have been up front about it. Again, game seems awesome hope everybody is enjoying it.

Believe it or not, there are developers out there who care about the people who purchase their game and that they have a great experience. Every interview with Sean has seemed genuine and that he's a gamer just like us making his dream game. And how ironic that your post is an attack on his integrity

So what are the chances that the servers are shit at the moment?

Likely, but in a game where one of the features is shrouded in mystery it's impossible to know unless someone says something. So it's best to assume it's not in there to force them to speak up.

He also stated multiple time that there was next to no chance of ever meeting anyone, so why was 90% of your excitement based on what he kept saying was basically impossible... I mean you were setting yourself up for deception no matter what

Because he said "improbable" not "impossible."
Just like all the appearances and interviews where he talks about people potentially running into each other or the "mystery moment" of seeing another player and realizing what your characters look like.

Just because someone is excited about something you're not as invested in, doesn't mean they're excited "wrong."

But then I haven't actually bought the game, anyway. I'm just really off put by how its marketing and messaging has been almost suspiciously intentionally vague, and now people are spending money on a product that's not what they were expecting, and people are acting like they're stupid for not being essentially clairvoyant.

But the fact remains that the chances of meeting were practically zero. Those words from Sean's mouth.

If it works the way you've highlighted then the chances are drastically higher, but the picture that was painted before launch was that players would start on any one of the 18,000000000000000000000000000000 planets, hence being unlikely that they would meet.

To be honest I couldn't care less if every single person with a copy of the game saw the exact same thing as me. I'd have been happier with less planets, better graphics and more to do.

it pissed me off for years seeing people asking if they can find other players or if they could carve their name into a mountain for someone else to find.

No. You can't. videogames are hard.

This game is incredible technical feat and yet it's still not enough for people. So ridiculous!
It's not enough to expect a feature that was confirmed to be in the game multiple times to be actually in the game? No, just stop. Multiplayer gaming is a HUGE selling point these days. You don't just make vaguely conformational statements for years about one of the most asked about features in your game and the quietly phase it out. That's called a lie.

GAF you're really letting me down here tonight with the pitchforks you're raising over a game that was never going to have a true multiplayer component.

Personally attacking a dude over the 1% chance of seeing another player (if the percent is even that high) is crazy right now.

You can tell by the OT that the universe is not as big as you think in this game, a bunch of players are already stumbling upon planets discovered by other players consistently

He's been transparent about what this game was since the beginning, if you think the stuff already in there isn't worth 60 then don't buy it. Him saying they may add some features like this later, that's just icing on the cake.

His answers were at best intentionally vague and he had to know people were going to misunderstand his statements. He should have been more straightforward.

Open your ports.

This is been part of the speculation all this time, but it seems possible that you are supposed to see other players, but it's going to depend on the servers ability to match you up together dynamically which may not be ready yet, or these people didn't have their network working correctly, or it takes time, there is a bug etc. Or it's perhaps it's never actually real time. You will see another person, but they will be AI controlled or static for example.

and then there are the contradictory statements so who knows. You would think that maybe all of this is to try to keep some surprise in the game, but the messaging is at times so specific that it basically spoils everything already. Though I guess I can imagine some things that I won't bother speculating on, but yeah what a weird thing.

Don't buy this game man. Why would you buy a game for a feature that the developer mentions is not the point of the game and unlikely to even be experienced by the vast majority of players in the game? Even if it turns out that meeting others is possible this still isn't going to be the game you want it to be.

What are the chances?!

No doubt the defence force will say it's because everyone starts on the same planet and in time as people travel the galaxy the chance of seeing the same thing is unlikely.

Whereas I just think the smoke and mirrors is clearing up and the game is not living up to the hype.

I'm not saying in terms of gameplay, I've not really given it a proper chance yet (will do tomorrow) but in terms of hype with regards to the size, and players having vastly different experiences.

Unless I've been smoking crack, or possibly been on a different planet, I'm absolutely certain that the whole premise of the game was how many different planets there were to explore, and then it was mentioned several times how unlikely it was that two people would see the same thing due to procedural generation.

We have 1 instance, 1 shred of evidence, we're not even sure how the system works, why are the time of days different for both those individuals, could it be server issues, could he have lied. The times of day are different because there is no actual persistence between each players universe (other than planet/species names). When you quit or pause the game it has been effectively frozen in time, meaning that when you un-pause or start the game the universe continues from where you left off (like all single player games). This right here is why multiplayer in NMS is not possible (other than the planet/species names thing).

The marketing of a game that is about a lone space dude discovering planets?

When has a article or sentence ever started with something like.....

"No man's sky...Hello Gamea up coming multiplayer game"

Or ANYTHING like that...
