Hajime Tabata: "Currently no plans to reveal more info about Versus XIII"

Tabata didn't want Nomura's waifu, he wanted his own waifu.

You know, Nomura explained Stella's redesign for FFXV in 2013 saying she wasn't his type before and he wanted to make her prettier. Now, Luna pretty much has the same facial structure as New Stella:

So you could say Nomura's waifu ran away with Tabata, changed her hair and took on a new name. Maybe that's the reason for Nomura's departure and why there's zero communication between the FFXV team and Nomura anymore

Was it Square Enix's fault? Was there an interview or are fans just trying to absolve their favorited director of any blame? It doesn't make sense for him to be jettisoned from the project and have the remains of the Versus XIII given to another director. He sounds like an ideas man who is awful at steering a game to completion.

Everything I write is commonly known and SquEnix messed up a lot of stuff during the PS3 era. If you ask me about specific link or write up idk exactly where I read them it was a looooong time ago.

Was not his fault if SquEnix messed everything with their Crystal Tool, Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XIII. He was waiting for some staff to actually work on his game 😒 but instead we got A Realm Reborn (pretty good) and two more XIII games ...

Bullshit. He burned through money for years wasting time deciding which cutscene should be real-time or prerendered. I'm not saying it was entirely his fault; just mostly.

This is for the best i think.
We already have people complaining and crying over Nomura's Glorious Vision™, no need to add more fuel to the fire.
Wait 1-2 years, then release a Ultimania Versus XIII with all the original concepts of the game.

People need to come to grips that Versus XIII died a long time ago and XV rose from its cancellation. An explanation is nice but they do not need to give it nor should they be required to. I really feel bad for Tabata and all the stress he must go through.

I agree yeah. The guy looks so perpetually exausted.

That said, I actually really hope we get a "the final hours of Final Fantasy XV". If any game needed it its this one!

MGSV and VersusXIII are the two "what if's?" of gaming. Kojima didn't get the chance to complete his vision and Nomura got kicked off his own project. Insane I tell you... At the very least I hope Nomura can use Noctis in future KH games.

I would add the Imamura/Tsuboyama Silent Hill 5 that started development in '04 & Kojima/DelToro's Silent Hills to that list, too.

Two productions that I feel very strongly would have been worth getting excited about.

Say what you will, but these early trailers actually had style, confidence, and a strong sense of what it wanted to be. Consistently.

Final Fantasy XV comes off as having none of that. Between the reboot, feedback surveys, concerning demos, and technical problems, Final Fantasy XV comes off as an identity crisis and uncertainty brought to market.

Funny enough, Versus XIII was vaporware, so it's also a project that no one, and I bet not even the developers/director, knew what it was going to be.

Hey can you talk more about how awesome your game would have been as you're releasing this toned down experience?

I am Korean.
I haven't been following the XV drama too closely. Are people obsessing over Versus XIII because XV is going to be drastically different? Does it matter when you were never, ever going to get Versus XIII?

I'd settle for understanding the idea behind it in the first place at this point.

That's my main concern about FFXV, this lack of confidence.
I've interviewed Tabata and he seemed to rely too much on focus groups and these feedback. It's like he doesn't have a strong vision to follow.

And it's not just talk, you can sense this in every trailer, presentation and feedback that they are giving to us.

Good. Stop talking about Versus and Stella. In fact, just say "no comment", or better still, don't allow those questions at all.

I still feel like Tabata removing Stella and replacing her with Luna felt like him attempting to put his mark on something that was never truly his to begin with.

In the sense that content has been scaled back, diminished, nerfed, removed almost completely, and/or changed.

Content has also been added. We have to remember that Versus was going to be episodic, and what we are going to get with XV is the full picture. While some stuff like the Insomnia invasion has been repurposed and other stuff like Stella has been erased, the latter parts of the game and the actual ending weren't supposed to be included in the Versus XIII game Nomura showed.

You don't get the "full picture" as you have to pay extra for Kingsglaive. Brotherhood may be free, but it's still one more product that is connected to XV. There's also A King's Tale. At the very least Kingsglaive seems to be integral to understanding XV's plot and that's coincidentally also the part that you have to pay extra.

Maybe they are using the characters like Stella for the next Final Fantasy game (Final Fantasy 16). Stella will be the main character and it will be directed by Ito with music by Uematsu. It will have airships, medieval castles again.

But the project itself has been expanded, outside of the "multiple games" thing (Which we have NO idea on how it would've played out, anyways). There is absolutely no way that FFXV has been "toned down" from the original Versus XIII game. If anything they made it a lot bigger.

Sounds terrible (other than Uematsu back).

I don't fault Tabata one bit for what he said. Why provide any more info on what is essentially vaporware when you have an actual GAME coming out soon? That's just dumb and distracts from promoting XV.

I doubt that there's much more to say about Versus anyway. Even if there is, it ultimately doesn't matter because it never went anywhere.

We can all dwell on what could have been, and it's a shame Nomura could never seem to find his footing, but it's what happened.

As for Stella? She seemed like a cool character based on what little we saw, but again, no need to obsess. Isn't Luna kind of Neo-Stella anyway?

I'm sure at some point we will get more info about Versus, what it was, and perhaps how it came to an end and how XV differs from the defuct FF Versus XIII project. Now is not the time though.

People's obsession with Versus XIII is hilarious. I hope this will teach Square-Enix not to bite off more than they can chew in the future.

A lot of you XV diehards hate any type of Versus XIII talk lol, y'all say gaf bully you guys for XV but here you are doing the same to Versus XIII.

i just don't get why anybody "cares". i mean it'd be great to see screens, concept art, ect on Versus but when has that stuff on a scrapped iteration of a game ever been readily available. 90% of the time that stuff comes through leaks over a decade later. and the game isn't even out yet

Soooooo what exactly should we be talking about that involves Versus at this point? Did I miss out on new information?

While I understand why Tabata shouldn't really talk about Versus, I hope someday they release at least a summary of the "original script".

Really want to see what were Nomura's ideas for some characters, especially Ravus da best:

I'm glad that we're getting FFXV and all but seeing all these posts and gifs of Versus still makes me sad for what could have been. That clip of Noctis walking down that huge stairway as his swords come swirling around him to protect him from the invading forces is still super iconic to me.

According to the one of the leaks that predicted Chapter 0

Ravus was supposed to Noctis' twin brother

XV was built from the remains of Versus XIII. Square Enix was not willing to waste the time they spent on Versus XIII and that is completely understandble, but by doing so they legitimize everyone who criticizes XV for not being Versus XIII. I agree that the journalistist's question was unnecessary, but they dug their own grave by insisting on using Versus XIII's concepts for XV.

I feel like this is the same stupid thing Metal Gear Rising went through. Fans crying for a game that really never existed as a game and they hardly knew anything about.

It's not only on the fans and I can see where it's coming from but I don't think it's a worth any thought in the end.

Companies really need to learn to not announce things with these overambitous
trailers until they at least have something than a neat concept. They're just asking for disappointment.

Yeah, I remember reading that one. It's not the same leaker though, iirc.
I dunno, Ravus for me was always related to the Fleuret family (probably as Stella's brother - so the concept is the same until this point) but there might be some important reason we can't really see its face in old Versus trailers (E3 2013 was still Nomura's story, btw). It could have been an explanation to why Stella had to fight Noctis, but since she was removed from the game I guess they had to change Ravus' role too (especially if we compare his E3 2013 look to Kingsglaive) . It's also implied he was blind. So many theories lol

I see. I wasn't really heavily invested with Versus. More when the whole project turned into XV is when I became interested. So my attachment isn't as strong with others. As far as I know, Stella to me is Kagari, lol

Makes sense. The whole project is an embarrassment. Ill agree with us tho the whole Yakuza spin sounds alot better then the whole royalty thing.
