Honestly, I don't see the point of a countdown or an "announcement of an announcement" for something like this.
They can put the video up on their site / YouTube channel, the gaming and tech sites will pick it up, and the mainstream news networks will run short segments with some variation of "Japanese video game maker Nintendo announced a new gaming system today". I mean, the 2DS announcement video has over 6 million views. That came out of nowhere.

There's 0% chance Nintendo has a Direct concerning the NX without giving people at least 3 days notice.
They gave notice a few days ahead of the recent 3DS Direct which had less than stellar announcements.

You'll get your yearly iterations (i.e. sports, Just Dance, COD) (but just for the first two years, after the 6 month late ports bomb) and that's it. There's no reason to believe it'll be any better than the WiiU.
I actually expect Japanese support to be waaay better then anyone could imagine it to be. Given the state of the industry there, Nintendo might be rallying as much hype and support as they can to get SOME resurgence from the JP market. We already have clear signs of Square Enix wanting to dive head first.

This is Nintendo we're talking about, so don't count out the impossible (I've learned that lesson many times in the past, though mainly with Sakurai instead of Nintendo as a whole). 12% should give them some leeway to surprise us.
As for me, if anything's gonna happen on the 6th, it'll probably be an announcement of an impending NX reveal Direct/event/whatever.

They're going from their least successful hardware(not including the Big Red Machine) to the NX.
I'd say it's of the utmost importance they hit all the right notes.

This is new hardware, it's like their real E3.
Keep in mind, I'd love to be wrong as I'd be fine if they announced a mini-Direct in the next 5 minutes about the NX.
I just want to see anything.

Basically. I would expect some western third parties to throw something out around launch to see how it goes, not unlike the Wii U. I really can't see this machine doing as badly as the Wii U, but in either case the results of the launch will determine if it will get some support or if it will get near 0 like what happened in the previous gen.
Since it is apparently a hybrid, though, its future with western support may be a bit brighter what have seen in the past. The 3DS did at least decently in western territories, but the system wasn't quite strong enough to get full indie/cell phone ports/ crowdfunded support due to the original system not supporting Unity and or any version of the Unreal Engine. From what we are hearing, though, it will no longer be an issue. It actually has a good chance of getting good support from that part of the market.

Sounds like a pretty dumb strategy, so I'd say this will indeed happen as it's Nintendo.

The new Metroid news made me laugh til I cried and Sakaguchi and company should make a sequel to Splatoon, not an enhanced port.
Only way I see them doing that is if they want Splatoon THAT badly at launch.

I'd say what's still insane was how a computer screen grab managed to leak one of the Nintendo Directs before and it hasn't happened since and I don't know if anyone ever got caught or claimed they were that guy who got that leak.

With a major success the first game was for Nintendo, making their next shot at it be a basic port of it, and not a sequel is a big let down. It would be like if the Gamecube Smash Bros. was only a port of Smash 64. They've had about a year at least by this point to start development of a Splatoon 2, so a holiday 2017 release for the game would be possible. Most shooters today do not take much time to develop, even going from Black Ops 1 to 2, Treyarch still had only 2 years to make the sequel, while working on major updates / dlc for the first game, and both games still ended being great entries to the franchise.
