Sony doesn't allow Fallout 4/Skyrim mods on PS4

Bethesda announced mods supported not Sony, did they not? Not saying sony isn't at fault for not allowing it but Bethesda had to go in knowing full well that it was a possibility that it couldn't happen. Both parties are to blame.

They really aren't. How don't we know for example that when Bethesda announced it they thought it would would go ahead fine. Hence the announcement..

About as amazing as the outrage in proportion to the actual issue. Also, a lot of posts here are from dedicated Xbox warriors, who should have no stake on either side of the argument.

Man, I love my PS4. My Xbox is okay as well, but the PS4 has been my main console, you'll rarely find me dogging Sony, but this was a shitty decision on their part. It isn't up to me to question who is to blame or their rationale. I expected this feature and it isn't coming. That's crap.

It's a shit thing for Sony to do, but your post has been made like 40 times now. You're not being clever.

I am disappointed GAF. No arrogant Sony posts at all on the first page.

Wasn't their discussion before that the issue is technical in nature, i.e. the audio format that Sony supports on the PS4 is not compatible with the mod framework for fallout and skyrim.

We don't know. We don't really know anything, there's a dozen ways this whole thing could have played out, which is why it's sort of silly to read as much into all of this as some people are.

Source?

The timeline of events makes it sound like they didn't check on the technical details until right down to the wire.

B: mods?
Sony: sure!
B: need to release soon but files don't work.
Sony: they have to be xyz
B: oh. fuck.
They already had PS4 mods working in beta and the issues they had (file space, audio problems, some performance issues because Sony wouldn't let users compile in PS4 texture format and made them used the PC format which is really bad on PS4) were on Sony's end and Sony assured them prior to the announcement that they would make it work.

Like all of this was openly talked about on the private developer forums by Bethesda staff. It's only a secret insofar as you needed to be in the Playstation CK beta to get access. All Sony needed to do was give permission for Bethesda to add a function to the kit to compile in proper PS4 format and it would be solved.

However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4,

Seems like Sony was offering the limited mod support but Bethesda didn't want to play ball, despite having PS4 mods in beta already.

There are a ton of quality of life mods, unofficial patches, balance changes, workshop elements, etc that wouldn't need new textures, sounds, or be very large in file size thay would have worked fine with those limitations.

Come on Bethesda. I'd take limited mod support over none any day of the week.

I wasn't speaking on you, and I understand some frustration. Read my post 435. I also own a PS4(getting a and XB1S(getting Scorpio most likely) on top of a PC. I feel remorse for getting the game on console and now a but more for choosing the wrong one, but a few minor issues doesn't make this Krazy Ken Sony all over again.

Guys, Sony is not against modding itself.
The thread here says that there are circumstances to mods:
1. audio
for some reason, Sony uses proprietary audio internally so that sound files would have to be converted by users but they don't have the rights to do so because intellectual property and stuff. Bethesda won't do it automatically because why would they?
2. size limitations
apparently someone at Sony thought a size limitation of 900 mb would be good for mods.

What does that say? The two points are the reason why mods for Bethesda games won't happen. Is it Bethesda's fault? In terms of marketing, yes. They were probably naive and would've never thought these limitations even exist.
But the limitations *are* the reason for no mods for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PS4.

What does that not say? That no game can have mods if it works within the boundaries of Sony's infrastructure and architecture.

Umm

I don't think they would have come out on stage and said mods would work with the game if they didn't look into the technical reasons before hand. I know their games aren't the best technically but, I think they would have known that much.

Bethesda's putting a lot of spin on this. This is their problem, not Sony. They're counting on the internet to raise a stink and sway Sony. Propriety audio means Bethesda doesn't want to pay. Texture / memory issues that could affect performance means that the game won't run well, which makes sense. Why should it? Textures coming from all over the place from modders all over. I get that this is something that people want, but the reality is that nobody purchases the game for the mods. The core experience is what's sold on the box. Everything else is a cherry on the sundae. If players are really more interested in the mod support, they really should go to the PC. However, blaming Sony for how the hardware is constructed, just doesn't make sense. Reminds me a lot of the Unreal Engine fiasco with the dev blaming Epic for inadequate tools and suport when every other developer was doing fine.

Bethesda is hoping for some slack to make something over-promised and under-delivered. Never forget the abandoned ps3 performance of Skyrim. ABANDONED. This is not a Sony issue. Send the pitchforks elsewhere.

That's what I said earlier. The wording implies there might have been a compromise. Sony really needs to respond to this.

Wow - really? Bethesda more at fault than Sony?

Words fail.

..... Ooof.

My money is on security concerns. I hope they speak out about this otherwise we'll never know and they'll just look bad in the end.

I'm betting this is what it is as well. Same reason why I guess they won't allow us to use external drives for game installs.

The lack of mods and true external drive support are both very disappointing. I love my PS4 otherwise, but honestly, this sucks.

I'm perplexed that some people still think this is a Bethesda technical issue. Like even if you ignore all of their comments and think they're lying because of Todd memes or whatever, Sony hasn't dispelled what they've said once.
