Priest decided to write Deathstroke because he isn't black. He grew tired of black character led books being the only offers he got.

He's white. Always has been as far as I know. Proest asked that because he's tired of being the guy you call when you a black character written well

I think the deal is Priest didn't want to be known for exclusively writing black characters. So he was checking to make sure Deathstroke wasn't.
Which brings us to the real issue which is that Deathstroke is so irrelevant, even people in the industry don't know basics like his race. Funny how the Marvel knock off is a flagship character, and the original is nothing.
I haven't read the comics, although this actually makes me want to.
If you haven't watched the show you should. It is a phenomenal show, and well worth watching.

Either way, I'm really liking the redesigns for both Richard & Sam. The minor changes to both of their costumes keeps what makes their designs unique to them & unifies their costumes in a way.

The two characters are used quite differently though. While Deadpool certainly was a Deathstroke rip off he's now to Marvel what Harley Quinn is to DC in terms of straddling the villain/anti-hero line, breaking the 4th wall, being silly/irreverent, but also adaptable to different types of stories, etc... Deathstroke has always remained serious and villainous, which likely lowers the ceiling on his popularity.

Not interested. I read way faster than I can watch and I've more interesting things *to* watch. I mean, I read 130 issues of Invincible on Thursday. It's incredibly bad storytelling to rely on another medium as a crutch.
You may remember him from Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, Thanos Imperative, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (the animated version of Sam was an alternate costume for Richard in that game), or Marvel Heroes (same case as UMvC3, Sam's a glorified alternate costume for Richie).
The comics are based on the show so you got it backwards..

no shit. that's my complaint; a good story should stand on it's own. you shouldn't need comics to watch a show and you shouldn't need a show to read comics. particularly if one isn't free.
Just to be clear, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 & Marvel Heroes are video games featuring Richard Rider. I highly recommend that you check out both of them (though you'll have to find UMvC3 used on PS3 or 360 since it's no longer on PSN or XBLA).

Ah. I'm working off earlier discussion where Priest said he'd only come back if it wasn't specifically to work on a black lead character. Maybe my memory is off on that.
The most interesting bit of your observation is that Harley Quinn was reworked with the clear intent to be DC's version of Deadpool. Irreverent, obnoxious, anti-hero with the whole reader interaction bits.
Deathstroke begat Deadpool begat modern Harley. Makes me question why DC didn't just tailor the OG character into their desired product, but that ship sailed long ago.

In defense of the Young Justice comics. I think the goal with comics based on animated shows, particularly shows that are still airing, is to act as a stepping stone for kids to get into comics. I actually liked how the Young Justice comics in particular emulate the concept of one book being part of a larger story. I enjoyed going through them with my daughter, who was a fan of the show and a total comics novice.
That said, I don't think they were doing great work there, or anything that would stand the test of time (and they weren't trying to). I generally agree with Malyse's point that comic stories should stand on their own no matter what context they exist within. I would never recommend that comic, not even to fans of the show (unless they just wanted more serviceable stories with the same team), but especially not to people who aren't already into it.
But. It's not an unusual thing for comics to exist as fan service, effectively, with the intent of supporting the central body of work. Sometimes those stories do stand on their own, but they often don't. So I don't think this particular comic should be too heavily criticized for leveraging the medium for a relatively normal practice.

Even beyond that you have people getting mad about him having Sam support a pride parade and having racist/ignorant people calling him racist.

Champions #1 was fun, topical, and well drawn. It was a perfect setup issue. No interest in where it seems to be going, though.
