As said in another non MonHun related thread, the userbase size is useless if there's no audience there.
At least PC would somewhat make sense due to its size, niche habits and worldwide interest.

Yup, its definitely unheard of for a user base to switch and to own one device exclusively. It makes me wonder how the game handled the PSP->3DS transition at all.
And at the bolded. They'll still have those guaranteed sales even if it was multi-platform. With the added benefit of selling to a wider audience.
If they're gonna have to make HD assets anyway theres no reason for it to remain locked to one platform. I'd kill for a PC version too.
They transitioned from a handled to another handled, which had the chance to be the most successful console in Japan at this time. They were already in talk with Nintendo due to Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, so the transition wasn't too brutal.
They also didn't had any choice, the 3DS was (and still is) the only console not bombing in Japan.
Now that they've constructed this relationship with Nintendo and the Nintendo audience, I seriously doubt they will start to see somewhere else.

Capcom mentioned the difficulties in having Switch/PS4 multiplats but I don't see how making MH5 exclusive to PS4 makes any sense. In Japan, the franchise is selling numbers Sony hasn't seen since the PS2 or PS1. They would be sacrificing Japan in exchange for the hope that it can sell slightly more copies in the West? It doesn't seem logical at all.

They aren't going to risk the Japanese market by not putting it on a portable, and their US public was also created mostly on Nintendo portables. If they are actually expecting a big growth from that, they are crazy, so the logical alternative is they are lying to investors.

Also, Capcom already talked about how difficult it would be to make multiplatform between Switch and PS4. The dev costs would goes up for a version that may not be worth it.
Welp hope it's at least PS4/PC. I can imagine it be similiar to Toukiden where the game handheld , console and PC then Monster Hunter would be NS,PS4,PC.
I have no doubt that the game will come on PS4, the real question for me is on the business model : If they spend a lot of money working on new assets, i'm afraid that they try to add lootboxes / whatever.

Main series will remain portable, too much success in Japan to change this. Anyway they'll probably can port it on home consoles with an higher resolution, like they did in past with Monster Hunter 3U on Wii U.
Also, Switch will be powerful enough to have good looking MH, so I don't see why don't port it on PS4/X1 too. If they would make it cross play, would be so awesome! Pls Capcom, do it!

It's worth pointing out that Toyo Keizai weekly issued like 2 month ago did say mainline MH series staying on 3DS was indeed a moneyhat, well, sort of. It said significant amount of money were offered but never said in what form, so I'm expecting marketing deals, development assistance (there were already rumors about Ninty aiding MH development). It's also worth noting that the article was treating the move in very positive way, stating that showed how aggressive Nintendo was to ensure 3DS's market share.

The article also said that compared to the MH securing move above Nintendo isn't that "aggressive" this time and third parties are felling little bit iffy about Nintendo's dedication to NX, but article was written before we all saw big splash screen of third party support.
From here is my pure speculation but Capcom may be demanding same amount of deal again, but Nintendo isn't so sure if money is worth it, because at handheld front there won't be competition this time around. Plus, even mainline goes to PS4XB1Switch multiplat or whatever, it will be "portable" version that would sell anyway (so NS version will sell the most no matter what).

I think Capcom said MH team is the big team (300 personnel or more? I forgot the exact number), if not the biggest team they have. And I'm talking about 3DS version here.
This assumes that the 'Nintendo Audience' was what was selling Monster Hunter, rather than the Monster Hunter audience selling 3DS. I'm willing to say it was a mix of both. Either way, Monster Hunter mainline games being locked to Nintendo platforms in the future is highly unlikely. Part of the reason MH was solely on 3DS for so long was because of a deal with Nintendo anyway.

This is a company that needed Sony to pay to finish a game of one of their main franchises. A company that completely killed Mega Man after Inafune left.
They're not putting their own money into anything unless they're getting some kind of moneyhat.
There nothing stopping Nintendo from getting sole advertising rights in the West. Its pretty much common practice between MS and Sony now.
Monster Hunter isn't some special piece of technical engineering. Its a game and it can be ported. If they're already having to up-res the game then the game itself is capable to be on multiple platforms. The majority of cost will be in the asset creation. I don't buy Capcoms difficulty excuse for one second. Every other company manages it.

It's a risk really. Put it on PS4 and Switch in Japan and you increase your costs..but might also limit the uptake of what is likely to be the only new handheld(ish) in town ..which in turn could damage the success of the franchise in the long run.
If I was Capcom I'd be pushing a Switch exclusive as early as possible to try to ensure handheld success...and then maybe port it to PS4 later for the west.
Big words from Capcom. A Switch, PS4, XB1 crossover game is what the world needs. They just need to drop the oldass 3ds engine and assets and start fresh. The overall game play is still fun but it needs tweaks. The mh4 model where content kept coming is what they need to do, not the churn out a G versions when they need another game.
The bigger the userbase for a new numbered MH game, the better it will be for the series future.
The Logic is pretty flawed. Monster Hunter Started as a console series and sold like shit compared to what Handheld has done. It was also on the most successful console ever so that didn't do jack shit for the series

Seriously! I've always wanted to play an MH game but I am not a handheld person. If they actually put out a game on a console that wasn't from Nintendo I'd be there day one.
Capcom has always been conservative. The Series was not a big seller on consoles. They looked at the cost of making a PS3 Monster Hunter and said fuck that well just make a Wii one.
The Wii was the first time a console Monster Hunter was a success of any measure and even then Handhelds is where they found the sales explode
Why not. Or sell it like Overwatch. Not F2P but free new characters and monsters. Loot Boxes are just cosmetics. That could be a fun new way to play that would also eliminate resource gathering.
