KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

How is everyone testing their black here? I think I've a dodgy panel, mine is the UK KS8000.

I notice when there is a black screen for example and white text while loading a game, there is a white shine that covers the area of the text. It's really annoying!

Should this not happen at all?

Aight, need to revise my sharpness comments. I checked my settings, and the PC setting was higher than I thought, it is 30 not 20, and my PS4 Pro setting is actually still at 0 sharpness. The PC input aspect may be different than the PS4 one. Text was a blurry smudge on my PC with the TV until I boosted sharpness. I even did the clear text recalibartion stuff and nothing helped like that did. Haven't had the chance to fidget with how it looks in games.

That's just inherent to how the Smart LED local dimming setting works on this television. I leave the setting on high and it looks ridiculous with a little amount of white on an all black screen (loading screens in games, play button on a movie, etc.)

You can turn it off, but it's helpful to the picture, especially in HDR. Just looks bad in that particular scenario.

RE: PC mode sharpness vs. other modes, from AVS Forum -

Sharpness: This applies a sharpening filter to the image to bring out edges in an image. In all modes outside of PC mode, any value above 0 will apply this filter. You will likely start seeing sharpening artifacts if this value is above 20. Recommended values: 0-20 (rtings.com: 0). In PC mode, the recommended value is 50, which is the true image. Higher values will apply a sharpening filter, while lower values will apply a blurring filter.

Thanks, clears that up. That is crazy that it applies a blurring filter.

Yeah I have absolutely no idea why they decided that it should work differently. Or have more lag and less options in PC mode too. Is there any reasonable use case where blurring the image would be desirable?

Currently playing Final Fantasy XV with this TV on my PS4 Pro with HDR on and resolution set to high.

I am running into an issue where Noctis' character model becomes grey colored with Red cloudy outline around the model. This happens usually when the character is in motion.

This last only for a few seconds; hence it is hard for me to capture on my phone.

It only happens once in a while and it usually fixed itself after a few second.

Tried saving a gameplay video through PS4 shareplay, it does not capture this issue.

Not sure if this is due to my TV or the game. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on?

Is Game Mode turned on in the TV's settings while you are playing this? Make sure Game Mode is on, and/or Auto Motion Plus is disabled.

Yes, game mode is on. Auto motion is off.

Edit: Now that I think of it, the red outline resembles the Noctis' motion while sprinting. It stays there after each motion then disappear after a few second.

Post a pic. Here is an example of the one I sent back.

OMG that is terrible! Can't believe it shipped in that condition.

I have an EA01 set that I haven't seen mentioned here in the last few pages. It literally looks perfect from a normal seating position. I can only see a little light bleed at the bottom edge if I stand right next to the set looking at an extreme down angle.

OMG my 49KS7000 (US ks8000) has arrived... and I'm at work for another 3 hours. But... tomorrow's my day off!!! Guess what I'll be doing all day long... lol

My LG UH6030 finally got it's newest update which fixes the Pro issues.

I'm still on the fence about HDR... I can't honestly tell if I notice a difference. Need to figure out some way to test HDR on and off in ESO.

The Witness has an HDR toggle that's quite convincing. The game's color palette and indoor/outdoor transitions are great at showing what HDR can do. My first HDR game, and made me a believer.

I went to Mankind Divided and turned on HDR... and it looks brighter with HDR and maybe looks smoother? But I don't think HDR does any smoothing? Might be placebo.

I didn't notice much of a difference on Ratchet and Clank either. I wonder if it's one of those things you just don't notice despite making a noticable difference?

FF15 also lets you toggle and the difference is rather stark.

I also have an EA01. Same thing on mine--touch of light bleed on thr bottom but otherwise perfect. I don't even notice it.

Anyone else notice color uniformity issues on light greyscale or white screens? Such as mine where it's more yellow/warm in the middle of the screen, and cool on the sides. Usually it's not noticable so it's not a major issue, but I see it on really light flat colors and white.

Yeah... I think I noticed it...

Does HDR almost give a faux sense of 60 FPS at times for games running at 30 fps? Like sometimes it seems like it became super smooth.

Hmm no, not for me, not like that. I am super sensitive to FPS and yeah, FFXV has never looked like 60 fps to me.

For me HDR is all about those extra color gradients. As far as I understand, all HDR does is increase the number of available colors from 16 million to 1 billion. I think there's some nit requirement in the HDR10 spec as well, but really it's more about the RANGE of colors. So you get way less of those harsh transitions from one color to another. It's most apparent on black or dark surfaces. For example, look at Noctis's coat with HDR on and off. You will see much more subtle variation in shades of black with HDR on.

It's hard to explain and it's subtle on screen, but definitely a huge step up in image quality IMO.

the best way I could describe HDR would be relating it to the detail in bursts of light.

For example in FFXV

Without HDR:

Coming out of a cave on a brightly lit day you will see big burst of white light as you exit the cave but cant really see any detail

With HDR:

You notice the light burst but you are able to see into it and notice the rock formation outside and the light reflecting off it and the detail in shadows.

To see a difference I suggest running FFXV and going to areas in the day where you see bright light and toggling it off and on. You should notice what was once just a burst of white light becomes a burst of light with distinguishable details inside it rather than being washed out.

HDR in and of itself is a catch all for several different things, but each of them does offer a dynamic range increase...

1.) Colors: not all devs or UHD content has supported WCG, although it is being sent in the Rec2020 color container. Even without the content being mastered at colors outside of the Rec709 colorspace, the TV can now show very bright (luminance) colors, where it was impossible to do so before. Hence dynamic range of color.

2.) Whites can also be much brighter than before, as a 1k nit TV will deliver 10x SDR level of whites, hence dynamic range of luminance.

3.) Higher bit depth. 10-bits reduces the step size between two luminance values of a shade of color or grey, hence increased dynamic range of the bit depth.

These 3 things are really what encompasses 'HDR'.

EDIT: dynamic range as a term describes at a basic level the uppermost and lower most detectable (either by eye or what the set can reproduce) levels. Anything above the lower limit never appears any darker, anything above the upper limit never appears any brighter.

Guys I bought the 55" a week before Black Friday from Sam's Club and I think its got a problem. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, but I don't know. These are pretty crappy cell phone pics I took so maybe it won't translate well to message board photos..but the problem is that occasionally on a black screen I will see this big white splotch about 3/4 up from the bottom of the screen in the center. Its an irregular splotch. I've tried to illustrate it as best I can in these pics. I tried different angles from different lengths from the screen and I can still see it so its not a viewing angle reflection or problem.

No splotch at all

I've seen it show up on all different input sources. Now that I know its there I am always looking for it and can't unsee it. Is this something I should get in touch with Samsung about? I could always return the TV, but I bought the last one in stock from Sam's Club and I was in there today and they did not get any more in, and I don't think they expect to get any more as even the display model was no longer there or anywhere else in the store.

Anybody having difficulty getting 4K YouTube to display from their pro? I can't get higher than 1080p.

Checked stats and I'm pulling 25 down.

Was literally about to ask if anyone managed to get 1154 working in Europe.

They haven't uploaded a new zip file yet. Wonder if they are even aware the current one is corrupt?

I saw a reply from Samsung help on Twitter to a persons query last night, this person mentioned there was new firmware on the website but the zip was corrupt (I think Samsung asked if he had the latest firmware). Samsung replied saying they had been made aware and to keep an eye on the website.

Whether this is 100% true or just a CS rep telling stories who knows?

Yea, for some reason getting 4K on the Pro with YouTube is a nightmare.
On the TV App it works great, but the PS4 App is nigh on impossible to get it.

It's there, it just doesn't always work.

Yeah, I noticed the TV itself was pulling 4K but the app can't for whatever reason.

Lame.

The TV app is almost always of higher quality than what they put on the Pro. Also no HDR capability on the Pro, either. I only use the TV app anymore.

Wait.... it's impossible to take a in-game screen capture of HDR. Unless the game somehow actually changes the color pallet and saturates colors even further to give that effect... Not sure.

Those screenshots just look like they were taken in SDR with auto and then native color space in the second picture. Saturated colors everywhere!

So the short answer is yes, change it out, there is an annoyance on your set that you cannot unsee and it will annoy you everytime you watch something on the set. TV is meant to be enjoyable and this won't be for you.

As for who to contact, I would recommend the retailer first (Sam's Club) and manufacturer second. Don't let the fact they have no stock right now deter you, just insist you keep your current set until they can give you a replacement. If they can't do that in a reasonable time then ask for an upgrade.

Trouble for me is the tv app doesn't save the login information and sometimes all the videos are bunched together until I click through them.

Still corrupt for me, just downloaded from German support page. Ridiculous.

I saw that you had mentioned this a few days ago, and so out of curiosity I went and compared the Netflix TV App & the PS4 Netflix App with the same exact pictures settings across both sources.

The quality is not bad on the PS4, but you're right... it doesn't match the TV App which I feel is superior. Why do you think that is?

This is quite disappointing to me, as I am connected over wi-fi for both the TV and PS4 and the TV CONSTANTLY disconnects and is unable to re-connect. My PS4 does not have this issue, which leads me to believe that the wi-fi chip in the TV is pretty bad.

Also noticed that the TV connected over a 5GHz 802.11AC signal will cap out at around 45- 50Mbps, while other devices on my network are fully capable of pulling 250Mbps over wireless.

I just really wish the wi-fi chip in the KS8000 was better :*(

I had this issue as well (the bunched of videos). Found this on the AVS forums... you can fix this by holding down the return button for a few seconds. What this does is it actually fully closes out the app (works for any app) and then when you open the app again everything is re-freshed and working again. Otherwise the TV keeps the apps suspended in the background.

It would appear it has to pass a higher level of QA.

I returned it this morning to Sam's Club and they have no more in stock, said it was a deleted item and would not be getting in more back in. I got a full refund but now what? Amazon.com has been sold out of the 55" for almost 2 months and it appears at least the 55" is getting to be in short supply. They did tell me that Sam's Club 45 minutes away has 5 of these in stock. I'm debating whether to make the drive or just wait and see what comes with the 2017 models.

mine arrived today. but the left side of the screen has less color than the right.
is this a backlight problem?

massive pain in the ass to return. sigh..

I know I can sideload the 1154 update, but not interested in doing that.

I still haven't received it OTA though, says my TV is up to date at 1150.

I contacted Samsung's Finnish support about the 1154 firmware file. Got a mostly canned response initially, when I further explained that it is their fuckup I have received no response and the file is still broken. God damnit Samsung!

How do I know if Uncharted 4 is using HDR on my console? lol

I dont know if this is the same with Uncharted but for FFXV I enabled it in the options and then when I launched the game the tv would say in the top left that "A video in with HDR is playing" and I would know that way.

This was in Movie mode on the TV, I assume game mode displays the same notice.

The other thing I could press is the middle button on the remote and it would display the input details in the top right indicating HDR UHD and then the resolution.

I didn't find any HDR notice anywhere in the game nor on the tv... wtf?

Talking about the TV though... GODDAMN.

Image quality is insane. Contrast, colors and black uniformity is absolutely top notch.
