The bullet hell elements will also bring a different kind of depth, though. There's no equivalent to it in their other games.

Like, the moment that Excelsus V2 boss appeared, I was like "oh, ok, another boring giant boss. Platinum love these". And then he started spitting bullets. Sheeeeeeit.

They actually made Excelsus fun.

Just finished playing it. I have never played Nier, but it has that Platinum goodness. I'm certainly more interested in the game now.

there was that one trailer that kinda says you're wrong . we have 3 known returning members and 1... well thats a mega spoiler if its true. so i wont post it here, or that trailer.
You can have have something that has a self-contained story that has returning characters from a past entry.

All the Uncharted games are self-contained stories. They don't need you to have played other games to understand what's going on. Will you have a better understanding of some of the characters and the occasional reference here and there if you had played the past games? Sure. But it's not necessary to understand the story at hand.

In a similar way, Nier Automata should/will be self-contained. Self-contained enough that it won't require knowing stuff from the past games for someone to understand what's going on.

For people complaining about the bullets being annoying, keep in mind those other (pod?) abilities they showed off in previous streams with like the shield or the spinning swords that essentially nullify ground bullets without input from you.

Remember that since this is a Nier game it will have a bunch of weapons with lore for every upgrade i presume. How many are in the demo?
For story i think Clemps on youtube did good summaries of the drakengard games and will be making one for Nier close to release. You can also read a text LP of Nier. Might as well read/watch what happens in Drakengard 1 too just so you know what fucked up shit can be instore for Yoko Taro games.

Thought the boss was pretty bad for the majority of it, not enough focus on the bullets.
But yea majority of depth will come from the gameplay, not the combat system by itself, which is good.

On the other hand, since this is Taro, it could quiz you on Nier events periodically throughout the game and penalize you if you're wrong.

nvm I regrets. I like the combat though. It feels great to me and with the dodge similar to transformers and bayonetta, feels nice. Im really curious how the combat expands in the game though. The laser is kinda weird to aim imho though. It's nice it slows down time slightly.

You can almost nullify them already by just continuously firing Pod bullets. The original Nier's projectile spam could be really irritating, but in Automata you're so mobile and so capable that it's quite easy to get through even the big bullet hell patterns without taking a hit.

Wait for Waypoint™ to finish the demo download.

Speaking of outfits, is this getting other costumes?

I know that we're going to have different models for the floaty robot thing (which i think is voiced by Wesker's (RE) english voice actor
which would be important to remember he voiced the other book in nier

Yeah out-maneuvering bullets is gonna be fun after the first game's combat.

This is exactly what I hoped for.

This isn't a Platinum Action Game with a Nier skin, this is Nier with a Platinum-styled gameplay with set pieces. Huge focus on ranged attacks, an absurd amount of glowing red bullets, constantly changing camera angles and the transparent letter boxing for cutscenes. I can see some of those things being a turn-off for the crowd who came for another Platinum game only.

My main concern was that with Platinum doing the heavy lifting that we'd get a standard Character Action Game that didn't feel like the original. This doesn't feel like that. This is the first time the gameplay of a Yoko Taro game hasn't been awful. I'm very thankful the game seems to have kept it's identity.

The game plays perfectly and is so visually striking. The boss of the demo was already a great experience and that's before it goes into it's final phase and goes nuts. Music is still on point and voice acting was superb.

My most anticipated game along with Persona 5. 2017 is gonna slay.
Dude when the final phase started and that music from the trailer started blasting i wanted to fucking scream, sooo fucking good.

Oh yeah the pods. Kind of meh though.

If Taro's other games are anything to go by, it will, but they'll be paid DLC.

Did Nier have outfit DLC? I don't remember.

Replicant outfit for 9S when.

nier had a dlc which had the brother nier costume (unless it was a younger version of father nier). and Drakengard 3 had paid costume dlc (which also came with a weapon and music track iirc)
