For the glory of mankind indeed. Played it two more times and it just feels amazing to play. I also don't get the complaints about the soundtrack. I mean, it sounds along the same lines as Nier, which was amazing and just had this mood to it. Getting the same vibes here.

Played the demo earlier today and damn it's really fun. I have absolutely no idea of anything related to the story as I never played the original Nier, but the combat is great. It's pretty much MGR2. Also, the last part of that boss fight is hilarious.

*sigh* ANOTHER game I have to pick up.... #firstworldproblems

Oh yeah, is is that Michelle Ruff (aka Rukia [Bleach], Yoko [TTGL], Rita [Vesperia]) voicing 2B?

Thats what you chose to focus on outta that hype post? But to answer badly constructed demos can happen ya know

Lol my bad, didn't mean to make that sound as snarky as it probably did.

I just like that the demo got more people to have it as a Day 1 purchase, or at least want to buy it at all, hence the rhetorical question on my part lol, as some people didn't even know this game existed until today

Played the demo earlier. Rushed through it but I really, really like the 3D to 2D stuff. I forgot that the first Nier did stuff like that too.

Played on normal and hard without dying and yet, when i watch some vids i still feel like i haven't even come close to understanding the combat. Its not deep but its got more layers than i have been able to use. I like the platform aspects and camera angle changes feel like a mini game within game. Bot shooting feels like a shmup. I like that about it. Has some of everything

Sad that I rushed it at lunch and had a lukewarm reception.

Bumping the difficulty-taking my time and switching controllers felt much better.

Excited for Steam release

The guest weapons only have custom effect. But you can customize the visible info quite a bit from the in-game menu, including the floating damage numbers. You can even terminate yourself by removing your OS-chip (instant gameover). :D

You can access the HUD customization from Skills - Plug-In Chips

Oh my fucking god.

This a demo and it's already my game of the year.

Also this pushed me to get my pro today. Still haven't unboxed but i want to play this a few more times on my launch system before i do on pro so i can see if i feel any difference. So far, i do see some slow down in top down mode when the shipping containers open with all the bots. Nothimg mahor but noticeable

Aside from the OST the audio could be better. Sounds a bit too sharp while lacking in the low end oomph that gives everything a weighty feel.

Does the demo have any reward/progress carried over to the main game? If not I think I'll just pick it up on my US account instead of waiting for it to drop on my Asia account.

Now that was a great demo. I love these types of games. Love DMC and Bayonetta so this scratches that itch. The soundtrack is awesome, getting major Ghost in the Shell vibes from it.

I just hope that Sony gives it the PR push it deserves because it looks like a real winner for Platinum and S-E. C'mon Sony! (I feel like Microsoft would be pushing the hell out of it)

I'm definitely buying this day 1. Can't wait. I hope the PS4's worldwide success has given hope and reason for Japanese developers to make more weird console games. Nier gives me good PS2 era vibes in terms of direction.

I guess i can see that about the low end. My sub only really started woofin around the boss fight but ill give it more attention on my next play. Then ill try my headphones.

Any custom control scheme recommendations? Been playing with a few different layouts but not sure what works best.

R2 to evade feels a bit cumbersome but ok for sprinting. Circle for evading kind of works but it removes your thumb from Square and Triangle for attacking. Also can't decide on the lock-on button (currently have it on R3) and pod shooting.

Played through it a few times (3 times on Normal and once on Hard), and for the most part I really liked it. Although the no lock-on on Hard mode and above was off putting, but something I can get used to. The soundtrack is pretty dope.

Wait, seriously? That's both brilliant that they actually implemented that and dumb that it's seemingly not mentioned anywhere

Well, guess it doesn't matter now as I'm largely playing the demo on hard. XD

One thing I like about Hard Mode is that despite lock-on no longer being a thing, at least you get a free button to use on whatever you want.

I put Evade on L1. Having Evade on R2 is really annoying since pressing both shoulder buttons on the right side makes my holding stance kinda slanted.

EDIT: This is if you're playing on Hard.

Demo was amazing. Exactly what I want out of a game of this type. Hopefully it is jam packed with stuff. I'll be playing on Hard my first go round. Screw that lock-on.

Demo was great but the end felt a little scripted. My excitement for what I thought was gonna happen was immediately replaced with dread as I realized I essentially had no control of the rest of the fight.

Amazingly polished demo. Let's hope the final game holds up as good as this does. One minor gripe, but this is mainly a hardcore-perspective gripe: the perfect-dodge is too forgiving. It is about as forgiving and as spammable as Raiden's block in MG Rising. If this is on purpose then I guess it makes sense as Nier is supposed to be more of an RPG instead of intense action.

Edit: Also nothing against platinum but I've never liked their shoehorned space harrier-esque segments and didn't enjoy this one either. It brought me back to feeling how I felt fighting Mundus in DMC 1.

Is there a move list in the game? Couldn't figure out much more than the basic combat strings on my first-run, and didn't notice anything that explained how to expand past them either besides the stuff I sort of stumbled into.

For the small sword on light attacks, I found light, light, delay light, delay light, delay light, delay light creates a ranged attack in front of you. It felt familiar somehow.

L1 for Evade because FFXV recently taught me that you need to be able to easily dodge while you're attacking, so you're going to want to access Evade with your other hand. R1 for Fire because there are times when you just need to be able to both Evade and Fire, so they need to be on the opposite sides of the controller as well. R2 for Switch Weapons so I can easily switch sets while I'm attacking; I don't know why the directional keys are the default.

That's pretty much everything that's noteworthy. Took me awhile to settle on this, obviously I could change it once the game comes out, but I like it so far.

A dodge button on anything other than R2 is sacrilege for me and I'm sure plenty of others.

My dodge is on left stick click(L3) since I was used to MG Rising's block and because of the fact that the dodge in this game is very forgivable and spam-worthy.

Only way I'd do R2 is if I changed the attack buttons to the other side. It doesn't really matter if you place it on L1, R2, or w/e, I just think that it's best for the Evade button to be available on the opposite side of the controller for whatever buttons you use to attack. Default controls were really uncomfortable for me in both this and FFXV until I did this.

The customizable controls are absolutely amazing. Set my controls up to mimic Bayonetta and it's fucking perfection.

I did my first playthrough on Normal, but I think I actually prefer the game without the lock-on. Aiming manually feels more satisfying and lets you strike a better balance between melee / shooting, and I found it to be perfectly accurate and controllable.

Music is glorious. My first exposure to Nier music, and I can instantly see what all the hype is about.

I like the characters a lot. Both have distinct personalities, but they also change depending on the situation (i.e. 2B is a bit of a hardass, and 9S is a bit of an awkward dork, but they both break their facades when shit gets real). 9S talks like I do, lol. I like him a lot.

The ending moments of the demo were surprisingly gripping for me. I guess that's the power of good characters, great cutscene direction, and exceptional music.

Boss fights and shmup portions were both a lot of fun. TBH I wish the shmup portions required more active dodging, but I'm sure that'll come in the full game.

There was some discussion earlier about the dodge move being OP. I don't think it is. Like, it's certainly strong, but dodging early (or using it too liberally for movement / cancelling) is a guaranteed way to get hit, and (on Hard) a hit from an enemy will deal a lot of damage. The game gives you strong tools, but I think it also has plenty of room to be challenging as well.

The menus are insanely good. I love the design of the chip system.

I don't think it's possible for me to be more hyped for this game. I need to get to playing Nier 1 ASAP.

Question: is there any way to disable the subtitles? Their timing is kind of weird in some of the cutscenes, and the VA is clear / good enough they I don't really want them anyway. Didn't see a custom chip for it, though.

A dodge button on anything other than R2 is sacrilege for me and I'm sure plenty of others.

Amen.

Umm, you sure that isn't just the standard mash light attacks combo? Cuz the few moves vids I've seen haven't featured any delay input moves and I haven't found any myself despite trying to look for them. Like this vid for example. It features those air dash cancel moves, so it would be weird if the guy missed something as basic as delay input moves.

As for the moves that it resembles, Darksiders 2, particularly some of Deaths scythe combo moves come in mind. He has plenty of moves that puts spinning shit in front of him.

Nice, L1 feels much more natural for evading (for the reasons you stated). I will try mapping R2 to weapon switch too, good idea for easily changing up combos on the fly.

Just finished an hour or so ago, the combat feels great and and like the turret pod robot mechanic, I think that's a neat way of incorporating ranged game play into a CQC hack and slasher, the characters/robutts looks pretty cool and are interesting to fight, I didn't really like the forced perspective scenes, for a games that's color palette is 90% brown it's hard to make out what's going on and who's where in a lot of spots, also the side view platforming didn't feel great either the way the camera shifted around in spots made it hard to navigate.

Overall graphically the characters looked nice and had some nice detail to them, The robots are cool, I like the old tin robot toy look that they have. The world looked incredibly bland, flat and generic, I wasn't impressed with that at all the proportions seemed way to big and there was way to much open and useless area in just about every location, but I hope there are more detailed and interesting locales in the final game. I understand that's a sacrifice they had to make with it being 60fps and a console game (here's hoping the PC version delivers) but it kind of gave me a vibe that this was once a Vita game and was converted into a PS4 game somewhere along the way. I'm sure that's not the case but that's how it felt to me.

I'll probably end up renting this game at least, potentially buying though, as I did have a good time with it, it just felt a little flat in the presentation department.

Fun demo - enjoyed the combat and I really like 2B's animations - the jog/run look incredibly natural.

However, I've only played one other platinum game in the past (MGR) and I thought that was WAY more fun. I never ever got sick of Zandatsu - one of those mechanics you can do over and over again and it still remains fun.

I wish Nier: Automata had something similar!

I just finished the demo having never played a Nier game before. Wasn't expecting anything really but just to get halfway through the demo and delete it.

Loving the feel of combat and the transitions from action to twin stick shooter. For some reason I got Sega Saturn era, vibes mixed with a little Sin and Punishment.

Ok, I'm sold.

Gonna try hard mode and changing dodge to L1.
Can someone tell me if the circle button (action) have any purpose when fighting?

You can sometimes get the smaller robots to a down state where pressing circle near them activates a random swanky finisher. It will actually show the toggle for it on-screen if you're near enough, but it can be activated from a bit farther away.

i am playing the demo right now. had to pause it to pee and thought i would hit this thread. what a cool game. i never played the first one but i have a friend (hi tommy!) that swears by it. well, this demo oozes style. love the mix of character action and bullet hell. the first pause in the action when i was talking to mech boy sold me. i was strutting. STRUTTING. anyway, i'm afraid i will have to add this one to the collection (read backlog). if the game is half this cool i'll have to wear gloves to play it. makes me want to fire up WET (don't ask, it's my guilty pleasure, one of my favorite style over substance games). looks like this one will have substance as well since it is an action rpg. damn it, and i thought i was going to get a break from buying for a while. with this and horizon zd on the horizon (er well, yeah, sorry about that) looks like there will be no lull in the fun until march or so (i haven't checked the full release calendar for 2017 yet).

edit: ok, just opened the menu and saw the quest tab, skill tab, etc. also just strutted up a set of stairs with analog control. analog strut, quests? i'm sold. frymoney.gif.
