Well don't get it then I guess?

But yea, to each their own I guess. Not that you can't dislike it or anything, of course you can. But to say you don't see the appeal of it at all, in a thread with 20+ pages of people saying why they're hyped for it, comes as extremely disingenuous.

I didn't read through 20+ pages of this thread, I played the demo myself and then I read some of the posts on *edit* the former page and can't agree with anything brought up. I'm not saying it's objectively a shit game or anything, I'm saying to me personally nothing about this game seems appealing.

Still I wish everyone looking forward to it will have a great time with it and enjoy it.

Who would have ever thought that Nier Automata demo would have a 50 page thread in a little over a day?

That's fine. Every game isn't for every one.

Also when you really start understanding the combat it's just phenomenal. I can even burst threw those magic enemies that annoyed me so much before now!

I didn't have a page number in mind, but this always seemed like the type of game that just about everyone would fall in love with once they saw a GIF or a video of it. So for people to actually get to play it for an extended period of time? Not surprised it became a popular thread, game looks like it'll be amazing.

Picking this up on PC provided it has an unlocked/high frame rate cap and no resolution lock or any other silly limitations in place.

My friend did a interview with game's producer Yosuke Saito on this years Gamescom, he mentioned that Platinum Games is doing the PC port personally. I think they will do a good job.

[He also said that they never even considered porting the game for Xbox One]

I just realized you can do a charged attack by holding dodge + heavy attack and a throw move by doing the same with the light attack button.

I'm probably very LTTP on that lol

Did they do Rising though? That was bad.
Transformers was fine, IIRC.

I have the same trigger set up as you. I moved Light Attack to Triangle, Heavy Attack to Circle, and Action to Square to better mimic Bayonetta, lol. Makes launchers easy.

Also moved Toggle Light from L3 to dpad up, cause why not.

Rising was done a while after game launched on consoles, and if I remember correctly it was done quickly by the small team.

Still I did not encounter any issues with the PC version, it was well optimized and run great.

I've been using A but I love how Custom is an option.

PC Rising had limited resolution options, and it launched with an "Always Online" DRM thing that got patched out within a couple days (Platinum said it was unintentional iirc).

But yeah, it wasn't a terrible port (pretty solid compared to a lot of Japanese games of that era), and hopefully their porting knowledge has gotten a lot better since then.

I saw them doing some crazy stuff with combos in the stream. Like tossing a Gauntlet into the air and hitting it as if it were a baseball. Anyone figure out anything extra stylish with the demo?

The only thing I saw that I haven't seen anyone else bring up (pretty sure I just missed it) is that 2B has different double jumps while jumping straight up. One where she does a backflip & another that's a corkscrew. You have to hang in the air for like a half second to do the corkscrew.

...I'm sure this wasn't the answer you were looking for lol.

The isolated audio tracks from the demo are soooooo good. Goddamn.

Tracks like this ... wow.

One thing I'm 100% confident of right now is that this is going to be one of the best games OST's of 2017, if not the best.
That song was okay at best. Kind of boring for a combat song.

Give the team who made 2B an award or something

She so fine and use 2 Katanas <3
She looks fucking stupid.

The environment art is super boring but how can anyone hate the character design by Yoshida?
See above. She's just... completely nonsensical. Ridiculous outfit, high heels, stupid bandage over the eyes, but we're supposed to believe she's some advanced soldier robot? Right. All flashy, "sexy" (lol) style, no substance. I guess it's just like the game, really, so she fits right in.

Also, Yoshida's character designs have been really awful for a while. I miss his FFT/Tactics Ogre designs... >_<

I underestimated how many character action/Platinum fans on GAF didn't play Nier, apparently. This game isn't going to satisfy your super hardcore "combat first" approach if it's anything like the first. Nier 1 was a very simple game mechanically. The story, genre switches, and music did all the heavy lifting. It's pretty obvious that while Platinum brings a swagger and proficiency in action game mechanics to Nier Automata, the game is still not going for super deep Bayonetta/DMC style combat. You folks need to ease up on your expectations of what Nier is as an action experience.
Well I for one hate Platinum games so... xD the combat in this game did nothing for me. The camera was terrible, and I was bored the entire time. The worst part were the flashy scripted sequences, I fucking HATE that shit. All so you can go "omgggg I'm beating up a giant robot with its own arm lolololol so badass 10/10 GOTY". Yeah, no. Zzz

Mate the environments look shit. The art is awful. Nothing but dreary looking warehouses and concrete.
I mean those things could still look good. I've seen some cool looking abandoned factories in many games, or at least, a tinge of atmosphere to them, but this is the flattest, emptiest dullest environment I've seen in a long time.

I've seen you say you hate Platinum Games (along with similar games) combat many times. But what exactly do you dislike about the actual combat mechanics? Besides your obvious disdain for the over the top spectacle element.

Finally finished the demo, I loved every second of it.

While I feel the combat system dosn't have the depth of other PG efforts, I feel there will be enough juice from it. There seems to be more attacks that might seem at a first look, and will more weapons, chips and pod attacks there's potential for one of the best ARPG combat system.

Just what I played blows up FF XV.

Played through the demo on normal. It was really good fun, if a little bit easy. Think I'll bump it up to hard for a few more runs (which is very unusual for me) and try to experiment with the button configurations and stuff. Loved how 'in command' I felt during fights. I haven't played anything by Platinum since The Wonderful 101, they're damn good when it comes to satisfying character controls.

I knew nothing about NieR before downloading this last night and now I'm looking forward to release day. On top of how good the game feels (and looks), I'm intrigued by the set-up. Who am I, where am I, what's going on?... I'm not really sure but I look forward to finding out!

So guys, gave it another shot, changed the controls...day & night. I'm in love. Even the story has got me by the balls now. Concerning the combat depth, I'm pretty confident that some layers will be added to the combat through weapons and upgrades.
I kinda dig the bullet-hell sections now, too.

Demos for games like Bayonetta 1+2, DMC 4 were different because they gave you most the skills unlocked for the demo which isn't the case for Nier Automata, I think. Yeah, hype is back.

I have to say though after playing through the demo a few times I'm feeling lukewarm on the combat in Automata. The attacks look very good but I feel incredibly limited in my moveset, I can only hope that in the full game you'll be able to unlock skills that give you more attacks with each weapon.

Out of curiosity, which control scheme did you use before & which one did you settle on? I'm changing mine tonight as well to see if what I have in mind benefits me, but I like seeing others as well.

Oh my god I just played through the demo.

Wow is all I can say. I just had a massive grin on my face the whole time. I don't know what it is, I can't really describe it but there's something about Nier just hits the spot for me. I don't know whether it's the gameplay, the music or the the variety in camera angles and combat scenarios. I can't really put my finger on it but these games man, they just click with me.

Day fucking one whenever that is.
Nier remaster please.

Are people honestly not a little weary of DMC combat yet?

I liked Transformers and Bayo but struggled to get through them due to them being the same old shit with a few mutations.

DMC and Bayonetta play very differently though...

Maybe you're growing out of it dude. Particularly if you think DMC and Bayonets play the same.

What do you think the genre needs to keep you interested?

Might as well start asking if people are tired of racing games, or shooters,. or platformers etc etc. Games with this kind of combat aren't that common.

Considering the different combos weapons get when they are on the strong or weak attack buttons, I don't feel we'll lack combos and attacks for every weapon + whatever we unlock in the full game with chips.

That type of combat is not exactly common. There's barely been 5 games with it in the last 10 years.

1. Well, I disagree. But not everyone agreeing on the merits of musical pieces is pretty normal I think.

2. Its worth considering that the track stripped out the game isn't actually intended to be listened to as a single 11 minute piece; its a series of "layers" that are designed to be switched between to match the intensity of battle. For example the vocal parts don't appear after 3 minutes, it seamlessly skips to that passage during battles against multiple foes. A similar method was employed both in Nier and Drakengard 3.

Really surprised you'd write such a lengthy post basically rubbishing every aspect of a demo!

You didn't like it, Ok. But if you have an existing distaste for Platinum's style I'm not sure why you'd bother to check it out in the first place. In addition to that, honestly all the faults you mention (and more) are also present in the original Nier (2b is pretty modestly attired compared to Kaine!) and its got a pretty staunch fan-base, who for obvious reasons are having their tastes served by this sequel.

I don't think you'll find the same depth as DMC or even other platinum action titles in this game. They've been pretty straightforward with it being more of a ARPG than a crazy action game.

But hopefully you can upgrade weapons for more attacks, use pod programs for combo extenders, etc.

You could say the same about First Person Shooters.

That's fair, but there's a bit of a difference when it comes to FPS and these games. These games are based on their combat engines and juggling mooks, whereas FPS tend to have a stronger focus on level design, for the sake of disparity. And I feel like FPS tend to have a more meaningful divergences in encounter design to the point where most shooters don't really play the same way.

Beyond that, I'd have the same problem if every shooter played like COD.

Maybe you're growing out of it dude. Particularly if you think DMC and Bayonets play the same.

It's possible, since I feel this particular direction kind of peaked in 2k5 with DMC3. However, I feel like Metal Gear Rising was the most refreshing game in years from the genre.

I don't think we've ever seen a real "DMC combat x RPG" yet. This is something new.

That's true! That's why I'm certain I'm definitely getting it.

The mechanics, by themselves, are fine, though I don't care much for the super-flashy slashing, but that can be forgiven if everything else works. It's how they are used that I don't like. The terrible camera, the boring enemies, the scripted nonsense during boss fights (and the boss itself was really really boring to play even outside of that).... There was never anything genuinely exciting going on, though the game tries to pretend otherwise.

Wow Wow dont say things like that if they aint even remotedly true.
