NieR Automata PS4 demo available now

From what I've read in here, the overall world structure is open with this being a 'dungeon' I assume?

That's one giant pig! I skipped around a bit, but I did not get any sense of how much fighting is done in these open environments. I am fine with most of the combat being in the dungeons as long as dungeons are not too far apart, or lot of interesting stuff happens in the open environments.
The demo is just a part of a dungeon in a zelda game.
If the game is like nier, there will be a variety of dungeon types.
Ill spoil tag some examples,of how drastically different those dungeons in Nier are
One dungeon you get trapped in a visual novel and play a text adventure. Another you go through a mansion in the style of resident evil 1, with locked camera's and opening locked doors.
I have heard about those famous (infamous?) dungeon.

Why do people keep saying Open World? The level design is more like Souls games. Fairly linear with shortcuts you can open.

I've played the demo 3 times.

Yep, that's Nier. With better combat.

And hoooooly fuck at the smoothness. Honestly, I played the demo, then went back to FFXV and it took me some time to adjust because of how smooth Nier is (and how smooth FFXV isn't).

Quick question:

Won't be able to play this til after the weekend, is this a timed demo like NioH was or anything or do I need to get on it stat?

Yeah, it's jarring. I honestly don't know why there are so many comparisons being drawn between the two games though. They couldn't be more different. Maybe it's just because it happens to be what everyone's playing at the moment (myself included). :)

Edit: I can't believe people think this looks like a PS2 game. Even PS3 games, particularly those from Platinum, didn't come close to running this well/smooth, or with such scope/depth to the environments.

And man, the custom controls and wide array of camera options can't be praised enough, especially coming from platinum.

Yeah, everything about the menus / UI customization / control customization / camera options is just top tier. I wonder if they felt obligated to go the extra distance with this sort of thing since you're supposed to be roleplaying an android, lol!

Which reminds me: is there a way to disable subtitles? Only option I could't find, and it seems kind of odd for it to be missing.

Not sure if this has already been asked, but...

What are the odds of them including the first Nier with Nier 2, they way they did Bayonetta on the WiiU? I know it's different developers/publishers and all, but it would sure be cool for people who missed out on the first game.

That's just exactly what it was -- I happen to be playing both. They're only comparable in that they both spew numbers when you hit enemies, :p

The only graphic that looked "PS2-era" was that AWFUL 'lava', but I'll forgive that since everything else looked fantastic.

I actually think the game looks pretty nice.

Of course I am a fan of the dry, earthy palette that a lot of Japanese games go for and think it especially fits here with the rusty, industrialized tone. The effects are also quite beautiful.
I love the pallet, my only complaint is that some of the layouts for the environments are too cut and paste, feeling awfully dry and very empty.

They're both RPG games with flashy combat and flashy dodging, and one of the selling points of FFXV was to get everyone hyped with how awesome its combat is. While it may not be entirely fair to compare the two, but people have been doing it for months now. Demo just makes the comparisons easier to make now that people can actually play it for themselves.

They said they might thinking of doing a remaster and/or PC port of the first one if Nier: Automata happens to be rather successful.

I thought the graphics looked fantastic, but then I'm not really a stickler for technical details - the only thing I really notice is framerate. Loving the art style too! It's a shame you don't seem to be able to preorder the steelbook from amazon UK though.

Played through the demo about 5 times, really enjoyed it. Similar to a lot of demos I've played recently where a lot of features just aren't available which unsurprisingly has led to some complaints about depth. I fully expect there to be unlockable moves or expanded movesets as you level or acquire gear/items in the full game. Graphically, I'm not expecting much as it's a video game with Nier in its title, it's going to have a small budget and I'm more interested in it having passable gameplay. This demo... no, the E3 trailer they demoed already exceeded that expectation. Picking this up on PC provided it has an unlocked/high frame rate cap and no resolution lock or any other silly limitations in place.

Im sure this has been said but it definitely feels like tanker mgs2 demo from zoe. Also, for all the graphics vs whatever comments. FFXV looks incredible and i couldnt wait to just get to the end of the game because every single other aspect was below average. Ill take a small hit on graphics if everything else is elevated. Gameplay > Graphics...forever

I was super short on time last night and only made it to the boss before I had to quit. I tried my best to get cuhrayzee and it seems very dependent on weapon switching mid-combo in order to do so, rather than button combinations. Kinda weird but maybe there is more stuff I missed, or will be unlocked in the full game.

This demo is amazing.

Wish the Black Box Edition can be purchased somewhere other than SE store...
That price though...is simply too much...

SargerusBR

I love Pokken!
So... i know next to nothing about Nier or Drakengard.

Automata takes place after Nier's 4th ending which in turn takes place after Drakengard's 5th ending...

Someone explain this to me pls

Combovers don't work when there is no hair
Hmmm. The demo felt somewhat more like a Platinum third person action game than the action RPG the first was. Not completely sold, but still day 1.

I've been trying to beat Very Hard without skipping anything. Not working out too well, mainly brcause I'm trying to style.

I'll have it done tomorrow. Only got hit once on a hard run, and that was a really silly hit too. I am also not running away from any fights, but also not seeking out enemies that are out of the way.
But yeah, not very stylish though lol.

The only thing on my mind lately is this demo. I'm thinking I may have to run with custom controls on it as I never got a feel for them my first time around. Will tinker with that after work.

Just played through it and I liked it a lot. Probably a buy for me. Just depends on how much Persona 5 and Horizon I have left to play.

Wow, just tried the Nier: Automata demo. It's seriously great, and I'm def looking forward to the full game now. Great controls and combat. A couple questions regarding the story, though. Apparently the Nier games tie into the Drakengard series somehow? I believe I played the first Drakengard waaay back on PS2. That was the game about a dude and his dragon fighting giant demon babies, with a bunch of messed up endings, right? Will I need to play any of the Drakengard games or the first Nier to understand Automata's story?

No, you don't need to play any of them to understand the story.

I have heard about those famous (infamous?) dungeon.

I know they sound awkward, but the
visual novel
one was the very point I realized I was playing something utterly unique created by a mad genius. The transition from regular gameplay to
dialogue to visual novel (or should I say, adventure book, because it doesn't even have illustrations, just vivid descriptions, which makes it even better)
has to be seen to be believed. Basically you don't realize you're playing one until several minutes in. To top it off, it all makes sense in-game. It's the kind of surreal, postmodern experience that many other developers try and fail spectacularly.

For the curious (and admit it, at this point you're not going to play the original NieR):

I don't understand the appeal of this game. The gameplay seems like run-of-the-mill hack and shoot the numbers out of your enemy, the level in the demo is ugly and uninspired, the dialogue sounds like something written and voiced like in a bad 70s porn movie. I didn't see a single redeeming quality. But each to their own I guess.

Sounds like a good action game.

That's just kind of Nier's style. The first game was like that too; very sparse on detail. Normally it's the sort of thing that I'd chalk up to system or time limitations but its very consistent among Cavia and Taro Yoko's works.

I would've maaaaybe thought about it if the artbook was more substantial, but 64 pages? eh.
Steelbook looks fantastic though.
Well i'm getting it on PC anyway, it's not wise to double dip.

Well don't get it then I guess?

The appeal is the polished, stylistic combat, movements, and character designs, the amazing music, the knowledge that we basically don't know what the fuck to expect from the game (I mean, the demo alone gave us bullet hell, 2d segments, a section where you pilot a mech and beat the boss up with its own arm), as the original was known for implementing various genres. You really don't see the appeal in a game that's free to be as creative as it wants to be? Not that doing stuff like 2d segments instantly means it'll be GOTY or something, but there's a lot of excitement to be had in playing a game that will differ greatly from what people are used to. The first Nier's primary issue was its combat, and that's getting rectified here. Story should be great, or at least weird as fuck and will have people talking. Music has the same people working on it, so that'll be legendary too. This game by all accounts shouldn't even exist, yet here we are.

But yea, to each their own I guess. Not that you can't dislike it or anything, of course you can. But to say you don't see the appeal of it at all, in a thread with 20+ pages of people saying why they're hyped for it, comes as extremely disingenuous.

Also when you really start understanding the combat it's just phenomenal. I can even burst threw those magic enemies that annoyed me so much before now!
