Even without the Pro controller this thing would cost me AU$560.

Damn dude that's a harsh price tag, the thing already is expensive, but damn. I feel for you.

Do we have confirmation of Switch is significantly more powerful than a WiiU? Or is this a GC to Wii power jump? No game I saw looked even close to a PS4 so I know that's out the window.

This is a more appealing WiiU to me.

Price bad.
Graphics capability bad.
Launch games bad.
Presentation bad.
Pricing of peripherals bad.
Battery life bad.
Paid online bad.

Nintendo really blew it. I still want one, but the atmosphere of disappointment is palpable.

A lot of those "80 titles in development" are probably ports and retreads. Think about it, this was supposed to be the big blowout and the best they could muster was Skyrim, Fifa and stuff like Street Fighter 2? If they had bigger guns they were stupid to now show them now.

I would have definitely liked for them to have shown more, but looking back, I don't remember Sony wowing me with their early 2013 presser. They had Shadow Fall, Knack, and Driveclub as their big games.

At E3 that year, they unveiled FF XV and KH3, both of which have taken 3+ years to see release. I think they also unveiled The Order there as well.

In any case, it's usually fine not to blow your load all at once in the unveiling. However, any more news is likely coming after the Switch release in March.

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
If they wouldn't insist that this thing is a console with a portability feature but instead claimed that it was a portable device with TV connectivity, I think the reactions could've been more positive. Other than the price and the freaking backwards online system with voice chat through a smartphone of course.

Its not portable enough for that. 3 hours battery? Large. It's the Wii U vision updated is all

Zelda BotW on Switch is 720p undocked and 900p with AA docked.

while it is equal/less than 720p on the Wii U.

It's definitely not a big jump. It's a bit less of jump from PS4 to Pro.

Is it? Only have one system to worry about for the future and this is the lineup they have to show.

This is just launch day + a select few games they chose to reveal for 2017.

We know for a fact that Nintendo has several big games under wraps for later in the year ( Retro Studio's game, Pokemon Stars, Mario x Rabbids).

Nintendo's total unwillingness to take financial risks regarding hardware and the plagues of adapting to HD development are really showing themselves in full now.

This presentation was awful. Xenoblade 2 is a clear sign that their 3D modelers sidestepped the issue of adapting 2D art into 3D and instead took the easy route of full moefication (Also is it running at fking 720p). Zelda was the only really good part of this. If one of the "highlights" of software you had to present was a port of Street Fighter 2 of all things I dread to know what middling options we'll have later on.

Incredibly poor showing. I don't even know if I'll get a Switch within the year. The addition of paid online is a moodkiller as well.

I'm a Nintendo kid. The conference was OK, paid online is hot trash for Nintendo and the price seems shit.

Made me want to put the money to a PC and re evaluate down the line.

However, no subscription for online and I'm probably day 1.

FFS Nintendo
I think they realised that in order to offer robust online infrastructure like Xbox Live. They would need to charge for it.

In the past it made sense for their online to be free because the service was completely bare bones. I think Nintendo are trying to expand more into offering gaming as a proper service. So they're moving into the subscription model for the online.

I'm disappointed overall. Zelda looks good, but I'm really disappointed that the hardware is holding back the game's art style. I don't care about Mario Kart 8, Mario Odyssey should be fine when that comes out. Best news for me is SMT being announced, but that seems like they just started making that. Another SMTxFE situation I bet, not expecting to see that for years.

Price is too high, I'll consider getting one when it's cheaper. Controllers are really expensive, paid online sounds like garbage considering the online service is likely to be garbage. No talk of a proper account system to use on any Nintendo device so it's already a huge red flag. Battery life sounds borderline useless, Zelda will probably only get you 2.5 hours.

The whole thing is just really underwhelming considering how long we've waited for this. The presentation itself was just a mess. Really horribly done from a marketing perspective I think.

Overall I give this conference a B+. Great job explaining the Joycon, they delivered games for the casual audience and they definitely delivered games for the core gamer. I mean a 64/Sunshine Mario game? I never thought I'd see that again. Xenoblade 2 so soon after X, Dragon Quest X/XI and the other the third-party efforts shown were promising.

I think it needed one more big 1st party game or 3rd party exclusive to hit a A territory but this was awesome

Got mine preordered. That being said, i'm still unpacking the amount of disappointment I had from this event, and just how off it seemed to be.

The first thing I wanna say is I love a lot about the Switch. Again, I have it preordered; I think it has the potential to provide some incredible game experiences. I'll be getting Zelda day 1, but thats more because 'what the fuck else would I get at launch', but I do wish I had more options. Seeing all the tech in the Joy-con, and seeing them being put to use in 1 2 Switch & Arms, really pulled me in better than I thought they would. That SMO trailer solidified my purchase.

However, I just couldn't help but get this feeling watching this presentation, that the Switch was being rushed to market. We've all heard talk that this device couldn't miss the current FY Nintendo is in, that it had to launch this year no matter what, and that they delayed it into March because they wanted it to launch in a period where it had more games to show. But, clearly, the Switch just isn't in that position yet.

It feels like i'm purchasing an early access console, and no other announcement sunk that feeling in more than the paid online service would be available sometime in the late-summer/fall. They didn't even have a revenue stream service that they are clearly investing in & planning on turning into a profitable revenue stream for them to be ready by launch of the system. And does that mean that some of the features they briefly touched on for that service, like parties & voice chat, will not be available until the paid service goes online?

The other 'gut punch' for me at this presentation was just seeing so many games get announced & them not be March 3rd games. Wasn't the whole point of the Switch to consolidate development behind 1 platform for Nintendo? Wasn't the delay into March meant to be so the Switch head a healthy lineup of titles going forward from its launch date?

The device itself seems amazing, but the 'platform' it is meant to be just has me disappointed, not because the games they did announce look bad (they all looked excellent), but that I expected more games to be available around the time it launch.

Got mine preordered too and I feel the same.

Not sure if my expectations were too high or something, and I actually only found out about the FY stuff today. :/

This was not a good presentation imo. Poorly paced and barely touched on the console specifics and details. The online hitting a paywall when its still iffy whether this even meets the standard of modern online gaming.

That said, the concept/innovation of a portable console like this is so appealing to me. The games look damn good, but the launch lineup looks too thin

I'm at a split whether I should keep my preorder or not.

I do have a Wii U, but I'm purchasing a switch for the superior version of Zelda plus as a future investment.

Or you could buy the Wii U version, dump it and play it at 4k in CEMU on a medium PC instead of 900p on Switch. There's your superior version.

Launch lineup? Nah.
Price? Nah.
Battery life? Whatever, I'll never use the portable mode anyway.
32GB? Why does my fucking phone have more storage than your console? Triple nah.
Paid online? Not opposed to the practice but given how garbage Nintendo's online has been in the past, I'll have to go with nah.

Verdict: Nah.

I agree with Price and Battery Life but

the presentation was awesome.

Graphics Capability? I dont know this is a portable device and the games looked on par with vita games or even better. Id say graphics are okay.

Launch games are bad? I dont know how Zelda is a bad series. It seems to be shaping up quite well. I prefer one Zelda to the entirety of the 3DS launch lineup. Also paid online is pretty much standard now (sadly.. but nintendo resisted two generations).
Euro is kinda weak, especially against the dollar, but also yen.

euro is pretty strong against the yen actually. There was a time not long ago where 1 Euro was like 90 yen. People are just too used to 1 Euro being 140 yen
Or you could buy the Wii U version, dump it and play it at 4k in CEMU on a medium PC instead of 900p on Switch. There's your superior version.

so I can play it on the go?

Fucking great.

Switch = AU$470
Pro controller = AU$100
Zelda = AU$90

$660.... $660 fucking hell Nintendo.

Even without the Pro controller this thing would cost me AU$560.

I don't even know how this console operates, UI, friends list, social media sharing, OS speed and features etc etc.

Two things

1) Wait and don't buy at launch until you get the info you want
2) Buy from NZGameshop (probably an aussie variant) which comes from the UK and tends to be cheaper for games than local.

I pre-ordered the Switch and the Zelda Master edition to play at launch. I guess my Switch will then collect dust until Splatoon 2 and Mario. I already had my fill of Mario Kart 8 back when I used to own a WiiU. The other games I'm interested in wont be out for a very long time, ie, Xenoblade 2, SMT5, FE Heroes, etc...

Oh dear what a disaster

£280?! Are they mad? Are they actually mad? And where are the games for the first year?

Portable battery life can go as low as 2 hours?!

You had it Nintendo, you had a success on your hands, now what?

Calling it now this thing will only sell about 500k its first month

It's a nintendo console. It will be sold out the first week and after that the sales will come with a dropper for the rest of its lifetime with sudden peaks with the release of some Nintendo games.

  • While the launch line-up is disappointing aside from Zelda, having both Zelda & Mario on Day 1 would have eaten into one another's sales.
  • The Pokémon Company likely wanted to save Stars for its own Direct later, like what happened with Sun/Moon.

True, but between March 3 and holiday many months will pass
And sit on Mario until holiday means that they dont have many other big guns ready for holiday
That means the usual Nintendo stream of games, nothing new / no advantage for consumer was shown deriving by the hybrid concept

Pokémon Company could have done that. Nintendo did nothing to comunicate that the Switch will receive many more games than the usual Nintendo console by exploiting the portable teams / brands / lineups

Poor presentation overall but I liked the filmed sections with the switch hardware guy. He comes across well. Overall though the live translation sucks life out of any presentation

Paid online is a bummer - they should have taken the opportunity to differentiate. With a likely smaller number of third party games it'll be a secondary console for many and I don't know if they can justify charging for online. Just as things like splatoon were getting big, this could snuff out online multiplayer if they aren't careful

The straps coming with the joycons are interesting. I hope they aren't a sign that the standard joycons are uncomfortable when undocked. The simple connection/disconnection starts to get a bit tiresome if you have to then connect those. Will be interesting to hear impressions of the 'naked' joycons

Zelda looked fantastic but I don't know if that can justify over £300 at launch (when you include Zelda). Surprised 1-2-switch isn't a pack-in. It looks fun but they should give it away to showcase the joy cons and build word of mouth

First party lineup is lightweight even for Nintendo. Basically only Zelda at launch is interesting, then a gap to splatoon 2 in summer, and another to Mario in the Autumn.

I've bought at launch every console since N64 and got my fingers burned a few times with price drops and big droughts. If I can survive the Zelda hype I think the sensible thing to do is look to buy in when Mario comes along and hope/expect a price drop by then.

CEMU compatibility is hardly good enough at this point to call it the superior version of any game.

I don't know, I played this week Xenoblade X at 4k pretty nicely.

And you're assuming it will run flawlessly on Switch.

So rather than buying a switch you are recommending buying a PC for one game?

If you have money to spend, yeah. If not, you could just play it on Wii U, the difference is not that big. But yeah, I know, the portability totally deserves 330 euro.

Holy shit that was so cringey! I was dieing when he showed how to sit on the sofa. I've pre ordered the red/neon for now but overall I'm not too impressed with the price and have some doubts about the joycons (I think they might be too small for my big man-hands) so I might cancel.

New Mario looks interesting and damn, I still haven't finished the other Xenoblade games yet!

And considering that they managed to lose half the money that they had on their accounts since the Wii days... just wow. At least Capcom was smart when they had only 120 or so million dollars left on their account after the RE6 and DmC failures and radically changed their entire business strategy and started playing it safe... but Nintendo? It's like watching someone crashing a car against a hydrant, then buying a new car and speeding with it at 200 kmh against a wall.

I don't think it's the hardware holding it back. Zelda was developed for Wii U - the Switch version is a port of version, they are not throwing away all the stuff they have been working on for all these years. Twilight Princess was the same, both versions used identical assets.

The new titles that were developed for Switch look just fine - they are a decent upgrade from the Wii U.

Its a reasonable assumption that a lot of gaffers already owns a PC and not one of them owns a Switch.

They assumed incorrectly then.

Besides, this is a terrible argument to begin with. I'm not getting a switch just for Zelda. I'm getting a switch at launch for Zelda. I'm sorry if that offends some people.

If you have money to spend, yeah. If not, you could just play it on Wii U, the difference is not that big. But yeah, I know, the portability totally deserves 330 euro.

And again I ask, why would I buy a gaming PC just for one game? especially knowing down the line I'll be playing the Switch more too.

Question, does the Joy-Con Grip that comes with the console charge your Joy-Con's or is the Joy-Con Charging Grip that you can purchase for $30 only able to charge your controllers while playing?
