Oh top of the page.

I'm not surprised, just a little disappointed.

I can deal with it though, but this looks like a Christmas 2017 purchase at this point.

Exactly. You just know Nintendo looked at the monthly payout and wanted if even though they cant possibly justify charging monthly. They themselves know that there simply arent enough games on the system, or ever will be, to give 1-2 away monthly, so they went with the really cheap option of offering you games that are 10-20 years old instead. Lets not forget either that the amount of games with a robust online component will likely be few and far in between, unlike PS Plus and Xbox live gold.
Correction: 20-30 year old games.

After the free-trial period, most games will require a paid online service subscription from Nintendo in order to play online.

"Most games" leaves room for games not requiring the service to offer online play for free, but on a game-by-game basis.

It was only a matter of time. XBLG and more recently PS+ have made it very obvious that people will accept a paywall. That's a lot of money to be leaving on the table.
Fuck those people. But I've totally expected it. Back when Xbox 360 got away with it, I was flabbergasted. Not so much anymore. Fortunately I'm more of a single player guy.

Why, Nintendo?

"Most games" leaves room for games not requiring the service to offer online play for free, but on a game-by-game basis.

They should keep multiplayer for their most popular online games free. Or else there will we a lot of disappointed kids and parents on Christmas or birthdays when they realize they need to buy a subscription to play Mario Kart online.

What a complete boner killer. At least once the free trial expires, it'll give me a reason to keep and play MK8 on Wii U... even with the fucking hackers... until I give in and pay for it to play with the new content online in MK8 Deluxe. I just hope the subscription is not too expensive...

Looks like I'll add Nintendo to the list of platform holders I'm not paying for the privilege of playing my games online. And the bigger smack in the dick is that the service is still lacking.

Sheesh, all my online multiplayer gaming will be on PC.

Ok this isn't good. If they plan on pricing it at $60/year...LOL Yeah, no. They better have an achievement system in place or forget it.

Man getting NES and SNES games for a month makes GwG look good. And I though MS regularly scrape the bottom of the barrel with that.

Who in their right mind would pay for this service?

F2P stuff I imagine. Same as on PSN and XBL.

So the monthly game download thing isn't explained all that well. Once you download the games for that month can you keep it like GWG and ps+ or is it a rental service and you can't play it anymore after that month? I'm fine with it if it's the former cause even the 20+ year old nintendo games are much better than some of the trash that comes out on ps plus. If it's the latter though then it's a huge bummer.

This just feels awful. You'll be able to play online for the majority of the year, and then you have to pay for it afterwords. It'll feel like a punishment.

So when the trial is up, you will need a subscription to access the store? The image in the OP kinda implies that, which would be funny in a that's-pretty-shit way.

When the trial is up you only have access to the grey dots, the red dots are payed exclusive.

Lol so -

- Launch support for only three countries none being in EU or Asia?
- Online features tied to an App so if you're a windows phone user or otherwise you're probably fucked.
- Old games included each month seemingly with no way to access them after they are gone from the inventory or your sub laspes.

Sorry Nintendo fans that sounds completely abysmal even it's like €3 a month it's still...

Whew!
F2P stuff I imagine. Same as on PSN and XBL.
F2P is behind XBL Gold btw.

They should call it Nintendo minus to show how great value that service is going to be.

Single NES/SNES game is hilarous unless they price it at 10$ annualy.

It's interesting in that many, many people I know exclusively justify online subs on PS and XB1 with the big shooters of November they play throughout the year.

COD. Battlefield. Battlefront. Titanfall. And a few others.

I honestly can't see the Switch getting anywhere decent ports judging by the tech disparity, and that's of they get ports at all

Some people I know are absolutely insane about defending paid online subscriptions. I hear a lot of "since this costs money, it filters the idiots out." Years of playing on Xbox live says otherwise. I even hear this with free to play games. "I don't like that x game is free to play, it's going to bring a lot of bad people into the game community."

The mental gymnastics is indeed incredible

PC for online games it is. I was looking forward to have Splatoon on a portable format, but with paid online I'm out.

I was on the fence with the Switch, but this pretty much pushed me off. I still hope it does well though.
I'm in the same boat. Was debating over a new graphics card for the PC or Switch, but with this I'm going for the new graphics card for sure.

No.
No more fucking services.
I can barely stomach psplus at discount prices from GAF sellers, and I'm only doing that for 3 months to play Bloodborne.

Christ. Wrong move Nintendo.

lol, they really done it...

Also

- Monthly game download

- Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment System™ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month.

A SNES or NES game? Sorry Nintendo that is nowhere near good enough. Talk about desperate to charge before you even have a good infrastructure/system in place.

There's no way they are getting a lot of PS+/XBLG crossover.

I barely used the online multiplayer on my wii u looks like itll be the same deal with the switch unless its dirt cheap. I think Nintendo is gonna get a wake up call when they realize most people have their friends on another platform or prefer playing on those platforms because they're already subscribed and or they're just used to it. Damn though I wonder if the switch does start getting stuff like monster hunter or the new pokemon will they charge people to use those multiplayer features as well?

Wait, maybe I'm reading it wrong but, can you only play the game for free in that month???

Exactly.

These things dont pay for themselves.

But to get people to start paying, they need to have an initial period where they goddamn make it attractive to get people through the door.

1 NES or SNES game for one month is a TERRIBLE press release line to run with.

Wait, its only 1 game? Damn the other 2 offer multiple games. At least 3.

And this is NES and SNES games....its not like its Wii U games.

Nintendo is about to be doomed for real.

Someone mentioned it already, on top of the other subs this is mostly gonna attract the big Nintendo fans. I cant see myself paying for online on the Switch but I gladly pay it on PS and Xbox.

But I will be getting a Switch.

^If it has a yearly option then its like GwG and PS+.

Exactly.

These things dont pay for themselves.

They don't, but if paying gets you voice chat via phone, one rental a month that disapears again, and p2p matchmaking, I wonder what the customer is paying for.

That's really poor value.

And i dout this will bring any improvement in terms of infrastructure like download speeds, which are atrocious on the WiiU and 3DS.

Price is the biggest factor. if its priced like the competition than ya...no thats a bad value on nintendo's part.

They do know they are not good at online and are at the bottom of the barrel, right?
I actually think they don't know this. Nintendo has shown an inability to deliver services outside of games for the last 10 years. Look at the wii u OS; how shitty it is. Then look at the the e store in general and their screwed up account system. They are messed up, Everything Nintendo does outside of game development is terrible( yes I am including hardware) IMO. I have spent thousands over the years on Xbox and ps4 online stores, I have probably spent 100 dollars on Nintendo online stuff because of these issues. I don't mind them charging for online but they need to show that they are delivering serious improvements across the board. However I think they don't understand that anything is wrong though so I don't think changes are coming except the paywall.

I'm annoyed they haven't announced what the yearly price is.

I'm annoyed that I'm again going to have to consider paying a yearly fee for multiplayer.

I stopped paying for Playstation Plus this past August after 6 years of paying for it and I was excited at the idea that I wouldn't have to pay for multiplayer for the Switch. Yup...

Price of the yearly sub is important. If it's the price of 60$ or 50$, Nintendo I wish you the best in your future endeavors because I'm out.

So many anually paid services that it's becoming unsustainable already. If I decide to own Switch, PS4 and XB1, and in any given moment I expect to play something online (which is pretty natural nowadays), I'd have to pay for 3 damn services only for gaming.

Also, this thing of "free" Nes/Snes games for just a month is a fucking joke.

This Switch reveal was such a disappointement. Such an expensive console! I'm out.

You thought PSN was bad???

Prepare your ANUS for Nintendo online LOL

I can already tell you that Sony offers for Plus subscribers already feels better (but still bad).

Someone knows for sure if that "play a NES/SNES game for free for just a month" is true?
I'm so confused >_<

Sure sounds like you won't keep that game for more than that month, a Nintendo move...

But, the wording also sounds like maybe you can choose from the full breadth of the NES/SNES library? One pick a month, for a month? That would make it somewhat less sucky.

Now someone from Nintendo can come forth and say: "We know you got questions, but they won't be answered before March, thanks for your support!" XD

If nintendo is smart, they will take the trial period to realize that they're paid idea is just not a good value proposition and either make it worth the ask or drop the fees.

So looks like the Switch will be an offline console for me... goodbye Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (especially since the latter has no new tracks). This is a seriously terrible move, Nintendo's really showing some pure distilled arrogance here.
