Switch charging time is 3 hours, non-removable battery

So, 3 hours from ~1% to 100%? I suppose that's fine, I usually start charging my electronics at around 20%. I also assume the battery life estimates are at unoptimized settings. I really wish they would start providing more detailed information.

How does that work, 2.5 hours playtime and 3 hours recharge? Is that even possible?

Back in the early 90s, you'd have to charge your remote control car battery for hours just to get 10 minutes of actual playtime. Nintendo kicking it old school.

Because a lithium battery has a very specific charge cycle. The first 20% of charging is done quite slowly (low current). The next 70% is done quickly (high current). Then the last 10% is slowish again. There are plenty of articles out there that explain this. Now there are newer battery tech/charge solutions that use higher current for faster charging (Samsung is one). But it looks like Nintendo elected to not use one of these or they could not fit this charge solution on the PCB.

Of course, I forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder :)
As long you dont run it flat, it would be significant faster then 3 hours than. I hope.

With its formfactor I think its gonna be build like any modern tablet, i.e. everything glued and soldered together.

Good lord. If that's the case it makes me want this less and less.

It's sad when we have older consoles that are more future proof than new ones.

They could sell Power Banks, though that means you have to carry with you a battery tethered to your Switch via USB cable.

They never tried to sell it as a portable replacement. In fact after the reveal trailer, they came out and outright said that it's a home console and shouldn't be looked at as a portable. You can take it out, but it's not the new DS, like some members want to believe.

There isn't going to come a successor to the 3DS when this is it. You really think Nintendo is going to have 2 handhelds in the market?

...hate me...
The news just gets worse and worse...

At least on the Wii-U gamepad, we had the option to switch the battery for a longer lasting one!

With this you can use a vast choice of USB portable chargers to play as much as you want. A 20000mAh one would multiply 5-6x the Switch battery life.

You can bring a charger with you. If I'm using my iPhone continuously playing games, it also drains battery faster than it charges, so I'll keep it plugged in if possible. Fucking chill out with the Nintendo hate guys.

I think a lot of people are over reacting. Yes, this has a non removable battery, but so does lots of stuff, the DS, The PSP, Vita, your phone that's really not an issue. Nintendo has already said the thing isn't portable so it never was designed to be off the dock for long, assuming you can play the system while it's charging it's really not that big a deal. The games that are designed around portable play will most likely be lower spec, meaning that a charge should last the full 6 hours.

Well, this seems to indicate that its a Type C connector, that's only using USB 2.0 power standards, so basically no fast charging (hence the insane charging time). That fucking suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

Fast charging would be the saving grace of this damn battery life issue.

You're phone isn't inherently designed to play games all the time. The Switch is.

Maybe if Nintendo had delivered a decent console people wouldn't be complaining? I was prepared to buy one last night before the conference if it had been good. They fucked up on every single level you would normally buy a console for.

Guys, think.
This is done so you can take a break between gaming sessions. Play for 3 hours, rest for 3 hours.

Nintendo is just looking out for us, that's all.

What?! 3 hours charging time is "insane" now? People really like to exaggerate. 3 hours seems to be right for such a huge battery.

I don't see how it couldn't have Quick Charge that's basically the whole point of USBC

No USB-C is a universal standard connection type with an agnostic connection orientation.

Quick/Fast/Rapid(etc)-Charge is a chipset technology.

You may be thinking about Thunderbolt 3, which is a bandwidth and power throughput technology (Which it seems like the Switch will not support, at least initially)

I feel sorry for those actually looking at this as a portable first or even half of the time. Imagine what the battery life will be a year or three in. Nintendo is in full go fuck yourself mode with this thing, and it seems like with each of these blunders it's their most passionate fans getting screwed hardest.

4310 mAh is insane, wasn't expecting that capacity. That's about 3x a N3DS, and almost 2x a Vita.

It's also indicative of the battery drain from the Nvidia hardware -- would have expected longer than 2.5-6 hours (3 hours average playing Zelda with auto brightness on it seems).

But yeah, glad Nintendo hasn't skimped on the hardware. Both the screen and battery -- things that matter -- don't seem cheap at all.

It is when USB Type-C fast charging exists. My Pixel XL with a 3450mah battery recharges in 1hr 40 minutes from dead. It uses standard USB 3.1 fast charging protocols, that Nintendo and nvidia could have used.

Using a USB 2.0 host is short sighted and probably a limitation of the board nvidia have built.

EDIT: Missed a bit there...

We only had the option because they deliberately gave you an undersized battery to begin with, which is something I have never once seen elsewhere in the history of portable electronics.

Preach.

I'm not trying to be that guy but I'm pretty sure the batteries a little bit bigger than what's on your phone. Discharge time is it bad probably considering the size of the battery or other tablets looking at the iPad it probably takes my iPad for five hours

This system better function with a dead (or removed) battery when plugged into an outlet. Still irks me the 3DS went a step back in that regard and, unlike the DS Lite, needs a battery in the console to function when plugged into a power source.

4310 mAh????

BIG mistake Nintendo, my phone almost has that and has a screen that's a couple of inches less in size.

You're touting this as portable??

A 12" retina MacBook has a 5297 mAh battery.

The PS Vita-2000 has a 2210 mAh battery.

The N3DS has a 1400mAh battery.

Not sure what you're getting at?
