protest voted?

"Both candidates are just as bad! I'm going to vote 3rd party out of spite to show how dissatisfied I am!"

Anyway, to answer the OP, I'm just trying to tune it out right now. There really isn't much I can do at the moment, so I'm focused on improving my own personal situation.

It's accelerated my desire to stop dicking around and get my Canadian citizenship sorted out. I've been a permanent resident for over a decade so I'm pretty much part of the furniture here anyway but citizenship will allow me to get more politically active. I love this country too much to not be prepared to fight for it.

Hoping that the silverlining in all of this here in Europe is that people realize how fucked up right wing parties are and both French and German elections will go better than expected.

i know somebody who did that actually can you really fault them? if you think about it the 2 party system is kinda messed up. it might be of better interest to this country if for once a non-democrat, non-republican had the office

By doing the same thing I do everyday and live my life. I had to watch my dad deteriorate from stage 4 kidney cancer last year, so there is nothing more worse for me that what I had to go through then unfortunately. I am tired of seeing all the nonsense on facebook though and I just want to get these next 4 years over with.

How do some of you function?

Life goes on. He's a shithead, and sure, I worry. But I'd never let it rule my damn life. I got bills to pay, a girlfriend to make happy, games to play, things to do. I keep myself occupied and hope things turn around. That's it.

It's more difficult to function with the understanding that the policies this administration wants to pursue can severely impact our ability to pay bills, the happiness of our loved ones, our ability to pay for hobbies, etc.

I feel where you're coming from, but hoping for the best won't solve any problems or protect us. A lot of my recent activism is to ensure and protect the future happiness of my girlfriend and everyone I love.

We need your help.

Attacking her physical appearance is meaningless, maybe even counter-productive. Same with her comedy routine.

The character from The Last Crusade was driven for a thirst of power to one day control the world, they both were from movements that caused a lot of damage i.e. The Nazis, and the Alt Right. And they both ended up choosing poorly. Work with me here champ.

Also she is literally killing me by supporting Trump.

I understand, but it's not convincing going down that path. Not really, especially like this.

---fuck, what do I know, maybe it is -.-

I'm gonna guess from my expert intuition and the careful context clues of your post that you're a straight white cis dude. Nothing wrong with any of that, but imagine you're talking to any kind of minority with that tone, and understand why people might take issue with your attitude on it.

My wife and I are going to give it about a year. I mean if these last couple of days are any sign, wooooo it's going to be a bad year. If things really continue this way and living here is just not satisfactory, we'll move out of the country until things get better.

Oh I see. My ex professor was telling me she voted for Jill Stein and the reason she did that was 1. she obviously also didn't like hillary and 2. if Stein got enough votes that may put a leg up on the whole 2 party system that we've always had

I wonder how she would answer if you asked her now.

Bracing for the worst, tbh. It sickens me we are going to build a fucking wall instead of helping more people get health care coverage (still no solid plan to replace what they're going to repeal, and Republicans have had many years to think about this).

I hope that my state, California, continues to expand health care for all on a state level despite what that shit is doing in the white house.

It's so frustrating with this going on when I'm also trying to get my life in order at the same time. Very worried that the business I started recently could suddenly collapse overnight at any time.

I have been donating to OurRevolution and just started donating to the Obama Foundation.

I want to get more involved wherever I can. I'm in the Seattle metro area.

I would never fault anyone for having a problem with the 2 party system. But that's what we have, and we would need to fundamentally change how our voting system works for third party votes to be anything more than cutting off one's nose to spite their face. The only fantasy where a third party rises to power is if one of the two main parties completely collapses and leaves a void to fill. In which case we would again have a 2 party system and be back to square one with people voting for new third parties to cut off their noses with.

not really but w/e

humor can be persuasive

What would that image persuade anyone of? It's clearly meant to just disparage her for her looks which is pointlessly vile and enlightens no one when there are so many actually valid things to attack her for.

don't you think the 2 party system is kinda unfair?
The two party system sucks in a ton of ways, but voting third party does nothing at all to fix it and only serves to potentially help the candidate that is farthest away from you. It's also especially ignorant when one of the two main candidates is utterly unqualified for the job, dangerously narcissistic and in general a terrible human being.

So long as the two party system is in place, you have two candidates to vote for. Trying to 'protest' the system by not participating in it will only work against the candidate who is closest to your interests.

I'm an American watching everything happening from overseas and I'm devastated. I didn't have any specific plans to go back but I always wanted to keep the option option. Now that's looking incredibly unlikely :(

I feel pretty good locally about what is going on, we are close to a Sanctuary City and we are a pretty blue state..

But didn't Trump said he would go after Sanctuary Cities?

I don't know I mean I'm still on the fence between democrats and republicans I mean they are really the same no matter who I vote for I mean maybe I'll look at a third party I like some of the things libertarians say.

Oh, and sadly, hoping for Fallout VR to come out so I can hide in the virtual world. Though at this point I'm getting scared enough to want to go protest (and also scared of the police and what they might do if I do. Least I live in a liberal state but we did have that Senator who wanted to make protesting an act of economic terrorism).

I'm just going by my words and that is to enjoy life one day at a time. It'll be shitty but it gets me through all the bullshit of..... That orange fuck.

Also, mass amounts of drinking. Drinking has always been my vice (despite how dangerous it is 😭). Will need to stock up on some tequila and whiskey and maybe some beer.

Feeling a lot of compassion for you fellow americans. Spreading the word to those who didn't believe the orange turd would do what he said. And trying to warn people that we have our own racist piece of shit menace who could be elected too in a coupe of month here in France.

2017 is pretty great so far on personal level, but it's off to a sad start in the political world.

This bears repeating. I never really knew this before now, and probably a lot of people don't realize, but calling your representative's office is not just a way to sound off-- it actually has a tangible effect. Take one minute to call and say "I want you to vote against this cabinet appointment" or if the senator has already committed to voting one way, "I support your decision" or "I disagree and urge you to reconsider", it gets recorded and tabulated and the senator will be told that X number of constituents agree with what you're doing and Y number disagree.

Thanks for that, I didn't know that's how it worked.

I'm kind of just putting my head down and tuning it out. I do feel a bit guilty that I can just ignore it and for the most part I'll be unaffected.

I see the headlines of horrible things he's doing and I think 'what's the point of getting involved in that thread?'

I was tracking the 'women protestors' thread all day and was about to post several different times until I decided it was pointless. That thread made me sad.

Except a third party reaching 5% of the popular vote changes things immensely in how that particular party gets funded when it comes to campaigning.

This is really some self fulfilling prophecy shit by writing off third parties because they will never get enough votes. Isn't that the same argument people use to shame non voters?Attacking non voters because they think their vote doesn't matter?

People like you keep saying "the two party is all we have" even though that doesn't have to be the case. Introducing a viable third party into our political environment holds everyone accountable and really should be considered more by both republicans and democrats who swear by this two party bullshit because they're afraid to lose.
