Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

There's an article near the end of the game that recognizes the events of raccoon city 16 years ago.

There's no way Capcom deliberately made this guy say that stuff, look that way and think no fan was going to question if that's Chris. They have a plan. We just gotta wait to see it unfold.

Gotcha on that raccoon city memo. I was thinking that it just meant the people around Spencer mansion when I played through.

I'm not 100% sure the difference in REDFIELD's appearance has to be narratively motivated. (i.e. Hunk lying about his name to somebody who doesn't know Chris or Hunk for some reason, or Hunk being another Redfield, or Hunk being a clone of Chris all along, or Chris being Hunk all along.)

One thing is for sure. The new live action movie is going to be RIDICULOUSLY out of touch and out of tone with this game.

I mean, the movie series inspired dumb shit in the games like jumping through lasers and kung fu battling t-virus monsters. That stuff seems gone now.

Maybe capcom is removing everything besides resident evil 1 from the continuity? That way there's no crazy umbrella highjinks, no super powered wesker, and no punching boulders. Just a T-Virus episode in one mansion and an E-Series outbreak 19 years later in another mansion.

As much as I want RE6 to be retconned out of RE mainline continuity (and my memory), Capcom have confirmed several times that RE7 is set four years after RE6.

I guess if you stare at it long enough...

It's weird Capcom had the chance to use their new CGI movie to update the look of REDFIELD and they didn't. I wonder if David Vaughn voices both characters?

I thought it was hilariously cute the lengths they go to not completely show Ethan's face -- you get to see the lower half of his face twice, once in a photo with Mia (the rest of his face is out of frame). Then once more when he's hung up embedded in the Eva goo. The exact same part of his face. That dudes nose and mouth are his defining characteristics, that and his favourite word is "fuck".

Yo, anyone think Fauxfield kinda looks like Arthur Darvill?

During the hallucination part before the final boss, if you're quick you can kinda see all of Ethan's face when you watch Mia throw him through the wall. It's really quick but you can kinda make it out.

Behold, Ethan Winters. He's really, really average.

The reason for the difference in appearance is pretty simple: the projects weren't managed side-by-side, and very few people involved with the CGI movie were involved with the game.

Honestly, people are seriously over-thinking this. They redesigned and recast Chris. It's not the first time this has happened. It won't be the last.

I think you're right.

The Chirs redesign is pretty jarring, but it's not a big deal. Chris Classic and NuChris both have a generic whitebread look, it's not like they messed up some iconic character design.

Chris's RE5 look is definitely iconic. Whether you like it or not, I don't think it's fair to say that it's not memorable. Chris struggled to find his identity pre-RE5, generally always in the shadow of the stronger designs of Jill and Leon. With his RE5 look he finally came into his own.

Still don't think "Redfield" is Chris BTW. The character designs in this game are rather bland overall IMO. I think this restrained style will hurt the game's appeal in Japan.

You say that but what exactly is so unique about Chris's design in RE5? He's a white, mid thirties military-type dude with short brown hair and stubble, you can find all of these attributes in like 90% of video game protagonists.

He's hotter than those guys tho

Ethan was really, really lame. Him and Mia have zero chemistry and I actually forgot they were married until you had to choose who to give the shot too

Nothing really bothers Ethan for more then two seconds either, even getting his hand cut off by a chainsaw.

I think you are vastly underestimating his appeal, particularly with gay players.

Yes there's tons of brown haired military dudes, but none of them are sexualized in the way Chris is. Don't just look at his BSAA outfit, (which is still great), but the other outfits he gets as well which are overtly homoerotic. All this in addition to his personality and the increasing gay subtext makes Chris a character that stands apart from the "dudebros" that frequent the medium.

This Redfield guy doesnt possess any of that inherent appeal IMO.

I really want to know what Ethan did before this happened. He knows how to handle guns, so he must have known about weapons beforehand. I feel like in the world of RE, average people know of these creatures existence and that's why Ethan reacts the way he does

Seems average people know about zombies because of Raccoon City, but I dunno about the other BOW. Of course RE6 was like worldwide doomsday scenario but theres not a fucking hint anything past RE2 ever happened in RE7

Some questions.

Ethan's arm is fully healed by the end, what does that mean?

Lucas messages on the laptop was to some 3rd party? Was he a double agent?

What happened to Zoe?

ah ok, fair enough then.
Though that doesn't mean it's Chris. If this is supposed to be a twist around an assumed identity, they're not going to spoil it in the credits immediately after introducing it.

Basically it's rather it's someone posing as Chris, (most likely HUNK), or a drastic redesign. (I'm leaning toward the former.)

Just spitballing, I doubt Capcom would ever think of things very intricately without outright denoting them in the game; I wonder if the chemicals or chem packs are bioengineered to have regenerative properties from the T-Virus or something.

edit: I want to add that I'm pretty much in the #teamrealchris camp, and I'm sure Capcom just redesigned him, but it would have been a nice psychological benefit to see a familiar face after an ordeal that's way more psychologically stressful than any of the franchises previous campaigns by a large margin.

I beat it in just under eight hours.

I didn't like the ship as much as the mines, but I wish the mines had more enemies to dump your ammo on. I killed everything and had a ton of ammo to play with. I would have enjoyed the CoD-lite aspect of the final area a little more if there were more enemies.

My problem with the ship, aside from the very good environmental/navigational puzzle, were as follows: amount of space you had to traverse for it; the locale was really bland and repetitive; and, the enemy placement was a bit sparse. I liked the remote bombs a lot though. I did not like playing through Mia's memory and then playing through the Ship again. That felt like padding even if it did add to the story.

The final boss was too scripted. If I could dump my ammo on a really good final boss, then my issue with the mines would be alleviated. Albert seems like a pretty sweet weapon though and it's a dorky kind of twist on the rocket launcher. Not only is it a pistol, but it's named after a villain killed by a rocket launcher(s). Which ties into the subverted chopper rescue.

I liked the story. Particularly, I liked the candid moment in Ethan's fungus-induced dreamspace where you converse with Jack. Overall, I felt the story could have used some more character moments and much stronger dialogue. The dialogue just felt too staged/gamey/disconnected. That's hard to explain, but kudos to anyone who agrees. I think the only voice I liked was Jack's. The notes were entertaining to read, which is a first for the franchise, I think.

My favorite bosses were Jack 1, Margueritte 2, and Jack 3.

I'm interested in playing Madhouse in Japanese. Magueritte sounded horrifying from what I could remember, and so did Clancy's screaming in the VHS.

I enjoyed the combat a lot, but it could have used better sounds and more viscerally satisfying enemy feedback. I felt combat was at its best when I was forced to use the pistol although I did enjoy the flamethrower and grenade launcher. Shotgun felt a bit too powerful for how much ammo you were given. Machine gun was a bit lame with how inaccurate it was combined with the serpentine enemy movements.

Played on PC with a 360 pad, and the controls were very slick without needing to adjust.

On the whole Chris/HUNK thing;

First, a question. Did I read something about Chris and Ethan talking before the ending? I feel like I either misread or I missed something earlier in the game.

I really hope we get some info on this soon. I get the feeling that the Not A Hero DLC will shed some light on it. Two things make me pretty certain of this. 1) It's a free DLC. This leads me to believe that it will have information that Capcom feels is important enough that everyone should have it, possibly an epilogue type thing showing why Chris
HUNK!
is with Umbrella. And 2), I feel like the name is also a tip off. "Not A Hero" could be referring to Chris having to do bad things for the greater good, OR it could literally mean that the person we think is Chris is not actually our RE hero, but an imposter.

I'm just hoping that we get a lot more RE soon, because I loved this. I want to see where they're taking this story, because this felt like they were trying to lay another foundation for the series, and I'm desperate to see what they build.

Just finished the game and was a little disappointed in the final "boss fight."

I hoarded all of the ammo that they give you towards the end because I was expecting a big boss. This encouraged me to run past most of the molded in the salt mine and hardly use any ammo. Then I got to the final boss and they give you a weapon to take her down pretty easily. Just felt kind of lackluster after some pretty tense boss fights in the game.

Overall I really loved it though. But one question what happened to Lucas?? I may have missed something but did he just run away and nothing got resolved?

I completed on normal and got the Albert-001 and defense guide thing

I beat this game earlier this afternoon, and now I've had time to think about it, I really feel like I'm overthinking the REDFIELD thing. It's probably not some crazy conspiracy with a fake Chris. This is Capcom we're talking about, not Hideo Kojima or something. Anyway, I feel this new goober-looking Chris is gonna be so weird looking in the Marvel VS Capcom game, what with his generic swat gear and neutral toned cadence.

So a guy in Umbrella soldier kit called himself Redfield, while I get picked up in an Umbrella helicopter.
Guys, I don't think Ethan is going to be okay.

Well... Redfield does sorta match his concept art appearance of RE1, except older.

I dunno, some things in the game feels like it's hinting that Ethan works or is in contact with Umbrella. His wife, the radio conversation, his reaction at the end.

I read a note that said he was taking a serum that allowed him to not be under Eveline's control, he was just playing along so he could keep feeding info to Umbrella (I think it was to them). So I'm guessing he booked it when Ethan made it past him, maybe?

Hm, well I remember reading the notes about him talking about the Baker's and how he hated that he had to clean up after all of the messes as well as information about Mia and Eveline's relationship. Guess that makes sense that he would book it out of there. If that was all an act though then he's one hell of a fucking actor.

Yeah, I think that was clearly meant to be him, but he got a new arm midway through the night.

cant even beat Mia with the chainsaw at the very beginning of the game on madhouse. wtf, how many bullets does it take. She just instantly kills me every time when she eventually hits me

Edit: seriously? I just put every bullet the game gives you into her and then hit her with the axe like 15 times and that didnt do it either

It's in one of the cabins. A newspaper from 2014 on the Annabelle (the game takes place in 2017, but the Annabelle went missing in 2014).

RE5 Chris >

He ain't been the same since he hopped off the gain train.

I wasn't a fan of the molded creatures. Just didn't feel satisfying to fight....but the Bakers were fun.

I wonder why there are 5 different voice actors for Chris Redfield in Japanese, compared to the one for English?
