(EU? Norway?) NES Classic Mini reaching EOL - production ceasing

Don't know what is more baffling, Nintendo stop doing this or Sega not doing a Genesis Mini already.

There has been megadrive minis for years but they are terrible and very cheap in build quality, also terrible sound emulation and some games flat out do not work on the thing.

I guess a 'real' megadrive mini would need to be similar to the NES mini, a powerful for it's requirement cpu, a hdmi port and quality build plastics.

Amazing, this is exactly what I thought should happen.

Now they're gonna release NES Mini 2 this holiday and repeat the cycle. Super limited, only available for like 4 months, people are always dying to get one. Keeps the excitement going.

That's disappointing after Reggie just promised it'd be widely available.

As others have pointed out in this thread, it would not be surprising if Nintendo may have changed their minds after they realized that these machines were being hacked with ROM's.

It is possible that they could be stalling production from their factory in Germany to make room for a new version, or even get working on an SNES Mini with a less constrained supply.

That's what those complaining aren't seeing. The scalpers are the profit, and a brilliant source of free advertising for Nintendo. It makes their products look more like desirable collectibles in the public's eye.

This only works if you eventually (read: quickly) satiate demand. Consumers don't put up with perpetual teasing, they eventually just buy something else.

Edit: Okay it's really bugging me that the bottom-right of the pyramid isn't there. Lousy architect, this one.

The sad part of all this is that, knowing Nintendo, this is probably true. Because with them it's not about logic, especially with hardware.

I'm glad I at least got one of these a while back (I was lucky enough to preorder on target.com that one morning in August when they were available for like 15 minutes), but am *still* nearly 3 months later trying to buy another unit so I can have two real, new actual NES controllers for it.

Because of course, typical Nintendo, they can't even make enough controllers so the only way to get one is to buy a second unit.

I love my Wii U, am pumped for the Switch, but my goodness can Nintendo be infuriating.

One thing no one is considering here.

NES Classic could be brought back later pretty easily. Every holiday or every other holiday, release a new version of the thing in limited quantities through the holidays for easy money and spotlight on their products.

This literally could be a perennial holiday tradition in the making.

This awful clones don't count. Just copy what Nintendo did and put 30 Genesis games. Even my grandma was talking this other day.

That this thing has been completely hacked and people were adding more to it, it doesn't surprise me at all that Nintendo might have changed their mind and decided to just pull the device. Or phase out the current version in favor of a new model with stronger security. Especially if they're still planning on selling titles via the eShop on the Switch. Want to blame someone then blame the hackers that likely caused this to happen.

Also wouldn't Nintendo at some point be liable if they didn't take any action and allowed it be a platform for other roms to be played on they didn't have a license for while still collecting money for the sale of each unit? It's not like they could push out updates to combat this like they do the home and portable consoles.

Seems like a rumor based on a misunderstanding or this is only for the Nordic countries.

We apologize to our consumers and retail partners for the inconvenience caused by product shortages. Some parts require time to procure, but we are working to increase production.

Ceasing production is not increasing production. There is no way Nintendo's share holders would stand for them killing a product with an insanely high profit margin while said product is flying off shelves.

That would be literally the dumbest reason to EOL this thing. There are 858950684839 other devices out there that can run NES, SNES, etc. emulators.

So you're right it probably was exactly Nintendo's reason.

While this would be an utterly stupid decision as these things sell like hotcakes, it's Nintendo.

So....not sure what to think. I was about to give the 2nd one I ordered to my brother, but if this is the case, I might just hold onto it...

Would have easily bought one as an impulse buy, but haven't even seen one in the stores. Now I want a Switch, but that has been sold out already. Fuck you Nintendo. At least with the Switch I'm positive I can get one a few months after release.

Why do they keep doing this shit. I want to give you money Nintendo, not the scalpers!

What the fuck is inside these things that they are still so hard to make? Unicorn tears? A dragon heart? The left big toe of a Sasquatch?

I still can't find one and have yet to ever even see one.

I swear, this company has no business making hardware anymore. They have no idea what they are doing.

The only people that the NES Classic is printing money for are the scalpers.

It sucks that Nintendo isn't producing enough NES Classics for the people who want one. I got lucky and was able to snag one after months of looking, but I'd love to get a second controller and to give as gifts if Nintendo wasn't ultra-conservative with a product that there's clearly a demand for.

What's happened is exactly what I expected. Nintendo putting out a niche product to have something out there generating buzz until the Switch was ready. Now we're less than 3 weeks away from the Switch launch, so all the focus will be on that.

I don't believe that Nintendo would waste their time in trying to produce a more secure NES Classic when you can play NES games on a million other devices. Hacking just makes the NES Classic hardware more desirable to people and to scalpers who are now selling hacked systems at 3x the price or more.

What I really want is a second controller, so I'll wait to get one at retail.

This is foolish but knowing their strategy is sell when its hot and stop after a certain time frame to keep that thirst for demand up like Disney someone stated. I always knew this was a novelty item and sooner or later Nintendo was going to pull the plug on it. The hacking probably sped up the pulling the plug as Nintendo doesn't get a penny for hackers adding more games to it. I'm guessing we'll get a SNES revision sometime soon too now.

Now that NES mini is hacked, and you can swap in any Rom you want, Nintendo is freaking out because a large part of their brand value And revenue comes from incessant 5 dollar a pop VC games on their flagship systems.

Buying a mini will probably deter a good number of people from making these sorts of nostalgic purchases.

It sucks, but Nintendo is both greedy and lazy.

IF true, it's a baffling move by Nintendo.

But I see no evidence at the moment to suggest that this applies beyond the Nordic region or even beyond the OP's employer.

What I have heard today is that Nintendo will no longer offer units to distribution (which serves smaller retailers in NA) going forward, and future units will only be offered to a handful of their top retail partners. So my guess is, based on that concrete info, they are probably still making them, just throttling who is getting them.

I can't believe I just walked into a store and bought one back in December. I've otherwise never seen them on store shelves.

people keep saying there's going to be snes classic but i don't see that happening. the only reason this thing even exists probably has to do with the fact the wii u wasn't selling and they weren't going to push more wii u hardware this holiday before the switch launch.

nintendo is back to selling you vc games individually.

I guess there's no way to get stats but this is incredibly shortsighted if their reasoning is people are putting custom firmware on it. I'd bet the teeth out of my fucking skull that outside of these forums for core folks, the majority of the nostalgia demo wouldn't know their ass from a hole in the ground when it came to flashing this thing. As someone who works with the general public, the majority of these cretins are doing well enough to just make it through a day without shitting their pants.

Aren't you part of CanadaGAF? You lucky bastard. I totally would've impulse-bought one for Christmas but the stock issues and looming Switch release have shot my interest. Never, ever seen one in any stores here. Pretty bummed about it.
