I still don't get how his games keep getting greenlighted despite seemingly flopping all the time. I'm glad that he does get to make more games, but I really, really don't understand why.

Key words: low budget.

NieR and Drakengard did not break anybody's pocket books. I doubt Setsuna or Star Ocean 5 did either. Outside of AAA, Square Enix is really good (or really bad, depending on your point of view) at limiting games' budgets. Taro Yoko is the type of director who thrives under low budgets, so it's why his games are always cult hits.

ATLUS and Bamco are the same way.

Started playing - anyone else getting weird flickering in the city? Like these weird flashes that appear randomly while exploring? I see it in both PS4 systems here but just in this city area. No clue what's going on.

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
I hate all of you btw.

I almost caved in and bought JP. But apparently you can't buy it atm ? Oo It doesn't let me.

Yeah, it's not up yet. Should be a few more hours.

When I check the Hong Kong store...I don't even see it listed.

He is responsible for what has turned out to be their best game in the last decade.

So it's not like they can actually fire him.

Let's not kid ourselves, even if Nier was made with lots of love and care, it wasn't exactly a critical darling and a charttopper
though they must have gotten lots of unexpected mileage from Nier's merchandise with the concerts and remix album
, so SE literally has no incentive of hiring him and spending money on his vision. I remember hearing stories that the previous CEO had Drakengard as some sort of pet project of his, but not sure where I read it from.

But yeah, I'm glad that he still does make and direct game.

--EDIT: let's not forget SE allowed him to make 2 versions of a game, 1 being exclusive to Japan lol.

How much will I miss out after not playing the first one?

I just don't have the time to go back right now, but I'm really interested in this.

With no spoilers, to get a different ending do you have to replay the entire game again? or part of it? or different content entirely?

I don't like replaying games even for different endings.

I can't believe how many times I need to repeat this:

The full game length times are in the OP.

The "10-Hour" line is taken out of context and refers only to one of the very first 'endings' in a game with multiple. To reach the 'true ending' of the game, it takes 25-30 Hours, and to see/do everything, it takes 55+.

You don't make this easy, do you?

Can you clarify something:

Do you have to play the same 10 hours over to get the next ending (i.e. new game plus), or is it like "okay, first ending done, now here is the next 10 hours of completely new content"?

Because if it's the former, saying it's a ten hour game is completely acceptable.

Is the OST up on YouTube yet? I am hoping someone went straight to work on delivering that goodness to all.

It's a Taro Yoko game lol. He thrives on doing things that make gamers uncomfortable.

Speaking of which, I just watched
the E3 boss fight
on Youtube.
WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL? I definitely wish I experienced this madness on my own.
No more spoilers for me!

This is how nier one worked.
Ending A: 20 hour game
Ending B: Replay the few hours of Nier, except you can hear all the thoughts of the shades
Ending C/D: Replay the last few hours except must complete certain side criteria to get the ending. There are a few minor changes here and there

You are not simply "replaying" the game for an ending.

Dunno abour this one. Nier 1 only made you play half of the game, and introduced new stuff in cutscenes. It was crucial for the storytelling.

This one I dunno.

And Drakengard 3 further streamlined this by actually making the 'endings'
just continue straight up. You don't replay stuff you already did, you end up in parallel realities where x happened and you have to play a completely different version of how the story plays out to its conclusion
so there's no 'you did this already.'

Well...there is reused bosses and stage type stuff in Drakengard 3, but you know what I mean. The routes are very different from one another.

Basically, I'm curious if Nier Automata does the Nier method or the Drakengard 3 method of 'endings' since all the endings put together are the 'true length' of the game. The game hasn't even really gotten halfway once you finish Ending A of Drakengard 3.

10 hours for an rpg *is* low.

It's not 10 hours long. That's like saying Drakengard 3 is only the length of ending A. It's 'called' an ending but the premise of the story means the actual progression of the story isnt even half way done by the time Ending A finishes because the plot
of D3 has parallel timelines and time travel shenanigans.

That's why I'm curious how Nier Automata handles this trademark of Yoko Taro games since all of his games have used this storytelling mechanic with multiple mandatory endings.

Hmmm, reading what you wrote makes it sound like you're replaying levels...with changes, but it's not like hours 11-30 are going to be locations the player has never seen before (going off of your description of Nier 1).

I'm buying it day one in NA anyway, but people saying it's a 10 hour game may have some basis to their argument...

Problem is, Yoko explicitly stated that Automata handles its endings differently from the original Nier, and I haven't seen anyone talk about how the game handles this. Nier 1 basically doesn't apply here until we know more.

We dont know how nier 2 will work, but we already know it wont be how nier 1 worked, but you can be sure it wont be "play the game again just to unlock an ending".

Don't know if this is old news by now but there are two free static themes up on the JP PSN right now. They're pretty chill and nice on the eyes, has SFX and music from the game too.

For the record, I'm also not against it being a shorter RPG with heavy incentive to replay. With a wife and kids, I welcome it. Excited to see how it plays out when folks start beating it.

Yup. That phase was fantastic. Too bad the past part of it kicked my ass a bunch.

They should have just made hard mode the 1 hit kill mode because most high end enemies seem to be able to kill me in one hit :V

Yeah, I'm not shitting on shorter RPGs. What's being said is that 'multiple endings' are a meaty part of Yoko Taro's games, and his most recent entry, Drakengard 3, made it so there was a linear story progression that went like this:

Play game - > Reach ending A - > Just keep playing - > End up in a completely different situation and storyline without having to replay the beginning and reach ending B -> you get the idea until you get the 'true final ending.' Of course, not all the content is completely unique, but the situations, story etc is completely changed and you're not 'starting from scratch' at all - some of the routes that lead to these endings start, like, in the 'middle' of said route in medias res, and you'll be like WAIT WHAT!? THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN AT THAT PART OF THE STORY BEFORE.

So that's why we're withholding judgement on how much of Automata is 'replaying the game' like Nier 1 or if it's like Drakengard 3 where you don't replay any of the game at all.

Was there any talk about other characters being playable after you beat the game?

I want to play as Anemone, she looks super cool...but she's probably just a merchant that's all.

I keep popping back into this thread even though I try to stay away.

Any word on unlockable costumes? Might help those who want to see less booty
or more

Yup. I'm getting it day one because 10 hours is more than fine with me for an action game.
However, I feel saying it's longer than 10 hours is more misleading than saying it is only 10 hours. People will say credit rolled in 10 hours. The game seems to have replayability like most of Platinum games and the different endings is icing. Dark Souls 2 NG+ changes enemies location and you could get different ending but no one will add the length of NG+ to the discussion.
I don't know though since this is my first Yoko Taro game so I might be off base here.

Oh no, the Hong Kong cards got more expensive at Play Asia. The offer was supposed to be open for a few more hours still. Did I see it wrong?

Yeah, that's why I bring up D3 because short credits roll after every 'ending' but the story is linear. You could almost think of the story as episodic, in that you reach an ending, credits roll, but the story keeps going after the credits and a new version of the story begins partway through but everything is completely different, levels are different, and characters are in the middle of doing things they didn't do in the 'first route.' Ending A, as I said before, isn't even halfway through the game in D3.

You're off base here.

NieR had a plot twist that completely changed the game the second time around. It was a requirement to play it more than once in order to understand that the game you just played wasn't what you thought it was.

Trust in Taro Yoko.

I really don't want to count the number of times I have to call the 10 hour number utter BS.

It's one of multiple endings, there's far more to the game past that point.

For reference, you can die on the first level and get an exclusive 'ending' that way. That doesn't make the whole game "only 45 minutes long."

(Didn't spoiler tag so people can actually see this and get an idea of how endings are in this game, helps that it's early in the game. )

God, I hate all of you so much.

I have the blackbox edition coming. And yet here I am at work, using office hours to check and see if the HK version of the game is on the store yet so I can pay extra to play this game a few weeks early because I am a slave to the hype.

Cannot wait for this game to tear out my heart and devour it just like the first one did.

God I'm so close to caving and just buying a Japanese game digitally, the closest I got to this was as simple as buying The Walking Dead season 1 off the US store before it was classified in Aus, although this has a little more of a language barrier, and I can't remember, you have to make Japanese psn, yeah? and there's no way to tie the game back to your original account for trophies, etc?

Do you personally know exactly what you have to do to get endings B, C, etc.?

I know this is a dumb remark but I didn't know about it :

You can entirely customize the controls.

This is a game changer. Jesus this game is perfect. (cause I'm not dodging with R2 thank you game...)

So good.

Ugh, all of the hype here. I really want to purchase a digital copy of the Japanese version, but I'm already spending enough on this game as it is (Black Box Edition). I just started RE7 last night, and I have a couple other games in my backlog (actually, several) to keep me occupied.

It's only a few weeks. I can do this.
