Kinda crazy that Switch didn't get any major AAA third parties for launch........

I don't think Nintendo or even its fans care about 3rd party games tbh.

I care for third party support. But what I'd like to see is more of the kind of games that were on 3DS and not so much what's on PS4.
Sadly, Western support (outside of indie developers) for handhelds has never been all that great.

By November, switch will be TWO generations behind the competition.
What sane developer is going to spend time and effort drastically reducing the quality of their product to fit on Switch?

When even Ubisoft (Nintendo's best buddy) didn't even bother this time around, it's apparent that western 3rd party support has gone from bad to worse with Switch.

I think the fans that do care are a small minority on message boards like this. They can't sustain most of the core, western titles we're talking about here. The number of people that would buy it isn't big enough for third parties to spend lots of time, money and effort when they could be developing for other systems with a more likely-to-buy audience. The third parties would be better off developing titles that would appeal to the Nintendo crowd - thing is, if there's more money elsewhere, should they bother?

Perhaps people that know that the games come out there. It's a typical vicious circle.

I see this argument alot but I just think from reading multiple message boards the average Nintendo fan isn't into Western style games. It could be they pretend not to like them since they don't release on their console sorry if how indie games on Vita were bad but now Indies on switch are amazing. But I don't know the sentiment is too consistent across too many forums and time to not be real.

The games don't sell because the nfans don't like them. If they were really into Western games they would most likely already purchased another console to play them with.

Everything about the Switch's launch leans on Zelda and how good it is. Everything. Without that one game, the Switch would be a laughing stock.

It's nothing to do with a March release.

Since Nintendo entered the console business their home console market has kept shrinking, except for Wii of course.

When Sony entered the market it gave developers a chance to make the games they wanted to make without bowing to the Nintendo draconian overlords.

Those developers loved the fact they would see more power come each generation and it would enable them to do the games they wanted to make.

Gamers wanted those sorts of games.

Nintendo just fell behind and relied on their first party to sell their console.

When phones entered the market casual home console gaming fell off a cliff.

Nintendo then released Wii U, a severely underpowered, expensive, odd, confusing console. It provided NOTHING for the big developers and ultimately sold nothing.

When Switch comes along, developers just look at the last 20 years of Nintendo consoles and go "There's no market there for our games and there are about 60 million consoles out there that are 4-10x as powerful as the Switch, why would we bother?"

The Wii sold to over 100million people worldwide. How do you extrapolate so many people with different tastes from message boards?
We people posting are a minority. Yes, we can influence the pubic to some degree but people buy stuff for various reasons and I bet famous games would sell good enough to warrant the purchase of the switch or make people buy games on that platform that is not from big n.

It's only 1 game. We had a 10+ page thread with shit posting about what do you buy on the Switch besides Zelda.

Not only was there shitposting the thread got embarrassing with a significant contingent hyping up Bomberman of all games.

The thing is, they're also buying a $300 console along with zelda. I think average person will buy at least 2 games, including zelda. will a 3rd party developer release a game in the hopes that their game would be the 2nd purchase of the average person? what if other developers also release their own game? it's far too risky. not to mention that there are also cheaper games available, such as snipperclips. 2-4 weeks after launch seems like a more reasonable release window, but unfortunately there are so few announced releases for that time frame as well, and that's Nintendo's fuck up.

What AAA third party games do you expect the Switch to run (and on a level anyone would consider comparatively acceptable)?

Like, all the major publishers gave Nintendo nothing.
Why should they?
If I owned a game publisher I would either sit and wait to see how the market takes to the Switch or do a cheap port as a tester. A complected port or mid to high budget original would not be in myvplan

Because porting a current gen 3rd party AAA game to the Switch means it needs to be heavily downgrade in order to even run.

I do think money was left on the table.

There's zero competition.

Something like overwatch or RE 7 would have sold very well.

Anyone expecting a lot of 3rd party AAA games for this thing is living in dreamland. There is no rational reason to believe that will happen.

No... NO! This insular thinking is toxic, Zelda could be the greatest game ever made, but it's not a stealth game, it's not a racing game, it's not a multiplayer/party game, or a survival horror it's one game in one genre that appeals to fans of that one genre, and those third party games didn't fare any better during a period Nintendo released bugger all on the WiiU, and "shitty port" isn't an absolute excuse for how anemic 3rd party sales were, PS3 and Xbox 360 had their fair share of shitty ports at their respective launch windows and they still sold in the hundreds of thousands at least.

It's like saying other games shouldn't have released at launch with COD on the PS4 and Xbox One because it will munch out any other game, it is possible someone can go into a store and buy 2 games for the Switch instead of 1.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I can get GTA V and MGS V together because they are different types of games. And sports? No reason to 'fear Zelda' lol.

I don't get this type of thinking either.

What are people going to play after finishing Zelda?
I Am Setsuna... importing a cartridge version from Japan since the Switch is region free and will play the game in English. I also have bomberman, but honestly, I haven't opened it yet and am considering returning it and waiting until it goes on sale. It just screams deep discount to me.

After that... waiting for the next big games to come out, hopefully it's a nice steady stream of first and third party games leading up to E3, where I'd assume Nintendo will drop some bombs on upcoming titles.

What feature does the Switch have that cannot be done on either the PS4 or XB1 that would call for a unique third party game? Besides just being able to play the console experience on the go?

That's a pretty key feature though.

Half of my backlog is due to the reduced time I have with my console available when travelling for work etc. Being able to take Skyrim style titles with me on the go is a big part of the attraction, especially if they are complemented by the type of games that traditionally appear on handhelds.

Get those two things right and that it plays original Nintendo IP's is just some very nice icing on the cake.

(Streaming video & a browser for the cherry on top please.)

It's just a subtle way to claim Nintendo's games are so much better than anything that third parties can't compete.

I don't personally agree, and sales like GTAV show the truly popular titles aren't from Nintendo.

I remember the interview where gearbox stated they would have brought Borderlands but they Nintendo didn't want to pony up the cash to do it. Maybe it's more of third parties not wanting to take the risk on porting games to The Switch at the moment while Nintendo would rather put their money towards their own games.

Couldn't Randy just steal the money from Sega?

So you're going to play third party games after it.

See, people like Zulithe exist, Nintendo ;)

Why would EA release a FIFA game when the season is nearly over? They've said they'll support it with next seasons edition.
This is just a reality of releasing a console in March instead of November, there aren't very many current AAA western releases and nobody wants to buy ports of old widely available games.

Fifa sells up until about a month before the next game comes out, that's 6-7 months worth of sales, same with COD, it's definitely worth it with a huge chunk of the year still to go.

Wii U Launch Lineup:

Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Skylanders Giants
Transformers Prime
Wipeout 3
Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two
FIFA Soccer 13
Tekken Tag Tournament 2: Wii U Edition
New Super Mario Bros. U
Ninja Gaiden: Razor’s Edge
Nintendo Land
Sing Party
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
Warrios Orochi 3 Hyper
Darksiders II
Assassin’s Creed III
ESPN Sports Connection
Just Dance 4
Rabbids Land
Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2013
ZombiU
Scribblenauts Unlimited
Game Party Champions
Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition
To be fair, difference there is;

1) It launched at the end of the year. Meaning it was just in time for the annual game launches of CoD, Assassin's Creed, Fifa etc also the busiest time of year for games

2) There were plenty of PS3/360 games to port as the hardware was on the same level. PS4/XB1 games can't as easily be ported to that hardware.

And I guess theres the fact that Wii U was the successor to the Wii which did well. Switch is coming after a major flop.

The idea that Zelda is cannibalizing any other release isnt accurate.

The Wii launched with Twilight Princess but that didn't stop people from grabbing Red Steel, Rayman raving rabbids, Excite Truck, Tony Hawk downhill jam, etc.

All those games sold extremely well and some even received sequels.

Granted BOTW is being received much better by fans and critics but at launch it's proven that consumers are more likely to buy more games than they usually would.

I don't think it's a matter of third parties being scared of launching alongside Zelda but rather as others stated they are taking a wait and see approach. The wiiu burned a lot of bridges and with rising development costs, it doesn't make sense to put that much in an unproven console where you were burned before.

Did the 3rd parties sell well for wii u? Particularly at launch?
Not sure but I remember ubisoft having a really strong start selling 8 shovelware titles on Wii launch. They did quite well considering their bad quality.

Imo Switch launch is a missed opportunity for 3rd parties

I fully expect this fall we will see these 3rd party games:

- Fifa
- NBA 2k
- Skyrim

- Sonic project 2017
- FPS from a big third party
- South Park Fractured But Whole

So really, it isn't too bad. Of course the more games the better. NHL, Madden, Rocket League, and Overwatch would all be great on Switch. So we will see what happens. But i think it is important for Nintendo and third parties to focus on quality over quantity.

Honestly that's a pretty good launch line-up.
But not a good launch lineup if you want to sell a new system.
It missed any hype inducing game.
NSMBU sold well as expected but did nothing to create excitement around the system and Nintendo Land while good failed to spread the word of mouth in a viral way.
The rest are mostly old ports.

What sane developer is going to spend time and effort drastically reducing the quality of their product to fit on Switch?

This is blatantly untrue. What we know of the Switch's CPU seems to place it on par with the PS4 and Xbox One, while its GPU should be able to run most modern 3rd party games in 1080p checkerboard, a resolution "Hardcore Gamers" have deemed acceptible on PS4 with Rainbow 6 Siege.

The WiiU had some heavy CPU issues however the switch seems unburdened by them, especially on Unreal engine

So we should just ignore the Wii/DS? Besides the power discrepancy doesnt matter all that much. Both the PS4 and Xbox One are limited by their CPUs. A less powerful GPU mostly just means lower resolution. Something most are happy to accept across all platforms.

What AAA third party games do you expect the Switch to run (and on a level anyone would consider comparatively acceptable)?

Most of them.

The Wii had 17 of the top 25 selling titles of Gen 7 as exclusives. Mario Kart 8 sold more copies on the WiiU (12M Install Base at the time) then Mass Effect 3 Did across all 3 platforms (PS3/360/PC) with a console installbase approaching 100M+ customers at the time

I don't care about most third parties on Nintendo hardware, but some will and they're needed for a healthy platform.

Why would a family pay $300+ for a Nintendo console when they get so much more for less anywhere else.

Nintendo is a secondary console at best to me, I already have a ps4 and xb1. I'm not going to pay $300+ just for Nintendo games.

Maybe he's on about Scorpio vs Switch flops? If so then 6tf vs 393gflops is a massive difference.

It's ok. Emily Rogers said the launch line-up of the Switch is better than the entire WiiU catalog.

lol.

For you.
It's not really that crazy. Third party AAA support has dwindled on Nintendo systems for quite a while for one, and the Switch is also clearly being rushed into the market, so no wonder no one had their ports of AAA games ready.

In truth Nintendo doesn't deserve the support after the Wii U. Third party publishing isn't charity and they're justified in making a low initial investment into the Switch.

And the technological disparity between the Switch and other gaming systems doesn't help.

My concern is the post launch line-up. Zelda can do most of the leg work at launch but what next? The line-up looks barren. Unless there is a ton of SW to be announced at E3 the switch is going to have an anemic launch line-up. It's not lacking in big exclusive games this year but there isn't much to pad the line-up in between.

How do you compete with breath of the Wild tbh?

£270 + £60 is a lot to pay. Most people would be able to afford only one game at launch and that most likely will be Zelda.

To be fair, the PS4 Pro is more of n3DS to the base PS4 than a whole new generation, & something similar could be said of Scorpio unless Microsoft wants to treat it as an entirely new gen. In the case of the former, it's not like there's gonna be any PS4 Pro exclusives anytime soon.

On-topic, third parties were burned by Nintendo too many times & are now taking the wait-&-see approach. If the Switch is a hit, they'll come eventually.

By offering something slightly different? People are thirsty for software around launch. There's fuck all to buy besides Zelda and there isn't much coming up either. When gamers finish with Zelda where do they go next? If Nintendo or 3rd parties had a few big games coming out in march they could have moved a lot of SW.

After getting my Switch all set up, I checked the eshop to see what's around to play other than Zelda (waiting until I platinum NieR Automata first).

Aside from Blaster Master Zero, there's really nothing that's appealing to me that I don't already own on the PS4 or WiiU. Binding of Isaac will probably be the next big purchase so I can have a portable version on the latest revision.
