Television Displays and Technology Thread: This is a fantasy based on OLED

Your criteria is unreasonable at best. We all would love the perfect tv, for $1500, but that's not going to happen. And you know what, the tech ball will forever continue rolling and you'll adapt those into your demands thus continuing the cycle.

Only the OLEDs and the Sony Z9 come close to your list. And you have to pay to play. The mid-range 2017 sets like your 8-series (Q7/8) and 900-930Es will fail too many of those as well, as they are ultimately edge lit.

So, narrow your expectations from absolute perfection and buy an OLED.

OLEDs are not close to that list. They have ABL (I'm guessing that since it was bolded and all caps in the list that it is a dealbreaker) and they are well short of being able to hit that peak brightness value in full screen.

LCDs are going to be a lot closer to hitting those criteria, especially since the only request was local dimming, not per-pixel on/off control. For instance, doesn't the Samsung KS9800 meet all of the criteria on that list?

guys i need your help picking an OLED tv. What's are the best ones from LG? It will be mainly for gaming and media.
Any of the 2016 models are world class.

LG B6, if you want the cheapest.

LG E6, if you want 3D and the design.

LG C6, if you want curved.

B6 has had some great price drops recently.

Grabbed mine from eBay last weekend for $1399. No tax or shipping costs.

I don't think I'll ever watch 3D on the TV so I don't care about that.what is appeal of curved TVs? Is there something I'm missing?

I'm not in the US so we don't have the crazy prices you guys have over there. I'm a bit envious :p

Curved TVs are a gimmick designed to sell more TVs. LG dumped them in 2017, as did almost every major manufacturer outside of Samsung who still has one flagship curved TV.

People don't care about the curve.
They care because it's the cheapest option for a 3D oled.
After looking at the E6 and C6 side by side the E6 wasn't worth the extra $600 to me.

What about prices? If I can get a Q7 55 inch for less than a 930E then I'm likely in unless Sony is somehow the better gaming TV. I want a less blurry image as I'm running around swerving the camera.

I'm still interested in both too but will wait for in depth comparos before making a decision.

Another thing to remember is Samsungs won't support Dolby Vision, but they're saying they'll have some way to generate dynamic metadata using HDR10.

Can someone explain why I should buy a bias light?

I love watching movies in a completely pitch black room
I think it look stupid but here is what google says. I'll never do this.

Bias lighting can help reduce the eye strain caused by long exposures to TV screens and monitors in dark rooms, but it can also help make the grays and blacks on your screen seem richer. Bias lighting is placed behind a TV to increase the ambient light around the screen without shining more light in the viewer's eyes.

Yeah the curve is so subtle it's practically a flat TV. Or even just a B6 with 3D (the best 3D you can get) a different chipset (doesn't use realtek audio). For the same price as the B6. One understated advantage of the curve is that it's a hell of a lot easier to get to the inputs on the side if you mount this on a wall :p

Just looked up the Samsung KS9800, that looks like an excellent TV and does meet everything on that list. Thanks, had never heard of that TV before!

I just want something that looks crisp and clear when I'm running about in a single player fps jerking the camera around constantly. I want something that handles motion blur well. I'm not too concerned about lag as I don't online game much.

I'm really interested in hearing your opinions on your B6, KevinG. I don't have the funds yet to pull the trigger on this TV but hopefully before the end of the year.

When that sucker finally ships and I have it all set up, you best believe I'm coming in here to talk about it.

Well this blows, i've contacted LG on and off for the past 2 months in regards to releasing the HDR game mode outside of the US/Canada.

And today i've been told it isn't coming at all, lovely. Would have gone with a C6 had i known this, thanks lg

I could buy the Sony 930e next week with my tax return on my vacation. I just don't know if it's a good idea when I might be able to get a Samsung Q series. And I have no clue what Vizio is up to. I really wish I had some way of knowing I'm not going to get burned.

What's your opinion on it? is it worth it?

In that circumstance, yes with no question. It opens your iris and lets more light in, making gray look more black.

You can buy strings that circle along the back of the display and are powered by USB. They aren't expensive.

If you want to get super accurate, you can buy bias lights that are 6500 Kelvin.

Depending on your TV's measured black levels, some bias lighting might be preferable than a pitch black room because your black levels aren't dark enough. For example, a TV with an IPS panel like Weevilone said. They're known for black levels measuring close to 0.1, and the worst of them are known to have grayish blacks even with the best calibration. By adding some ambient light in an otherwise pitch black room, it'll reduce the perceivable black level of an IPS TV.

Oh hey, Sony released the update to enable the apps on the UBP-X800 today. Amazon, Netflix, Vudu, and the dreaded Opera TV store are now working. I'm assuming more apps are forthcoming, the sheer number of (mostly garbage) apps available for my old BDP-S790 was bewildering.

Any word on Dolby Vision support at some point?

Not at this time. Sony are "considering" adding DV support down the road.

Since DV carries a separate licensing fee, I'm assuming they'll only do it if they judge there is enough consumer demand for it. They also released the Z9D without DV support last year and added it later on.

Things have changed slightly re: DV. Dolby saw that people were not interested in supporting their hardware at all and now offers it as a software solution. Licensing and the higher processing required are still concerns though. I expect DV actually has a chance of not dying now.

Sony X93E (XE93) received

FlatpanelsHD has received Sony's new X93E / XE93 LCD TV for testing. It features 4K, HDR, and later Dolby Vision. Is there anything you would like to know?

Sony X93E in the US and XE93 in Europe is one of the high-end models of Sony's 2017 line-up. It is a flat LCD TV with 4K resolution and support for HDR. It will later receive support for Dolby Vision via a firmware update. It also comes with Android TV, twin-tuner and built-in Chromecast.

The review is expected to be online soon. If you want us to examine or comment on something specific in the review, feel free to post a comment below. Subscribe to our Newsletter, Facebook, RSS or twitter to receive notifications when new reviews are online.

Sony X93E will be available in 55 and 65" sizes in the US and Europe. There will also be a 75" X94E but be aware that it differs from X93E as it is equipped with backlit LED.

Personally think that some sort of bias light helps make viewing more comfortable and makes the tv picture look better.

On that note here is a video review of the new Phillips OLED (sorry if it's been posted), HDtvtest are calling it the best 4K Oled tested and reviewed so far, and it has a built in bias light! Big call, but bodes well for Panasonic's and Sony's oleds as I'm sure they can best Phillips. Lag is 57ms, so a bit slow for us gamers.

So I'm sure this has been asked somewhere in the 30+ pages of here, so I apologize in advance...

I have a Panasonic Viera plasma that I simply adore. The picture and color are just fantastic, better than what I see on many modern sets I see at family and friends houses (granted they probably haven't set their picture settings correctly).

I know at 8 years old, even with minimal use for the first 4 years of that, its going to die eventually and plasma is a thing of the past. What type of TV/brand is closest to the picture of a Panny plasma these days? Preferably 4k, since I'd like to potentially invest in a Scorpio this holiday, and upgrade to a Pro down the line.

Thanks in advance.

My B6 will be here Wednesday.

Best television purchase I've ever made. Enjoy!

I would love an OLED monitor but when you're that close to the screen color distortion is bad, I guess I could always hook the PC up to an OLED TV.

LG OLED 2017 hands-on review. http://referencehometheater.com/review/lg-2017-oled-hands-review/

This year every OLED has the same panel and same SoC, so image quality between the different models should be identical. Based on what I saw with the W7 and E7 models, the 2017 LG OLED models offer the best image that I have seen on a TV to date.

One persistent issue with the 2016 LG OLEDs was the presence of some slight shadow crush. This could be mostly fixed through a combination of the brightness control and the 20 point white balance, but not perfectly. Having to choose between perfect blacks or more shadow details I always went with blacks, but it was a compromise. On the 2017 panels this has been fixed. All of the shadow details are visible, the brightness control is much finer, and you get the best of both worlds now.

Input lag became a big issue last year as HDR video games were introduced. LG managed to fix a bit of their issues last year, but with two different SoCs they had issues. This year all the displays use the same SoC and the input lag for HDR signals in testing is only 21.5ms. Even hard core gamers should be happy with this level of input lag, being just around 1.3 frames in total.

At CES 2017, LG made a big deal out of the fact that the new OLEDs, free of ABL in SDR mode at 150 nits or less, were good enough to be used as reference monitors by Technicolor. Having seen one and measured it, I can say this is the case. Watching some clips from Harry Potter and Skyfall, the dark shadow details were visible while black levels were pitch black. The Macau lantern scene in Skyfall looked better than it ever has, with the bright orange-red lanterns glowing on top of the water with the wave details clearly seen.

Seems LG hit a home run with their 2017 OLED TV's! Now i can finally replace my VT60 plasma.

My PS4 Pro and Scorpio later this year are ready.

Man, i can't wait! I think i go with the B7.

Good to see they are addressing shadow detail. That seemed like a real weakness of the 6-series OLEDs compared to LCDs, particularly in gaming where you often have to deal with trying to pick details out of dark scenes.

Example:
https://youtu.be/P1PpHwfoT5Y?t=6m35s

Assuming the HDR screen tearing issue and some of the PS4 Pro weirdness is fixed, it seems like they may be top-of-the-line for gaming performance this year (image retention notwithstanding).

This is the kind of thing I was waiting to hear. Just a few more reviews and I'm sold. Any word on when rtings is getting a few of the sets?

Also side note. Isn't the B7 this year just last years B6 repackaged and sold at warehouse stores like Costco? And the C7 is it's equivalent this year, what with dropping the curve and all? Thought I read that somewhere but don't remember if it was confirmed.

Wow. Hopefully they don't settle there with input lag and improve it further like they try to do for all things PQ every year. I'd love to see it hit 1 frame of input lag 16.67. Combined with the response time of these TVs should make gaming a dream.

This is getting ridiculous. USA gets another firmware update(to fix hdr game mode tearing) for the b6 oled while the rest of the world still doesn't have the update for Hdr game mode at all, aka 2 firmwares behind.

It's been 2 months now and still nothing, how can we get in contact with someone higher up in LG to get a proper answer? Customer service is useless.

I'm sure the firmware for other regions was delayed to fix the issues with the US firmware.
