Here are some issues I have with the Switch launch for us to politely discuss

So I'm loving my Switch. Am I alone in this? Take the complaints with using the joycons as individual controllers. I too felt the joycons were too small for it and didn't feel comfortable enough.

Last night in bed, my I asked my gf to play snipperclips as I own it but haven't tried it yet. We used the individual joycons for it and didn't even have the straps with for raised shoulder buttons (and you use the shoulder buttons a lot). 2+ hours later we were still having an absolute blast, my hands didn't hurt, and everything worked. Is it the most comfortable setup? Nope. But it got the job done without impeding my ability to game. That's really awesome.

This is when some of the brilliance of the Switch started to click. I can now see myself playing mario kart with them without any issues.

Let alone the dock and undock experience. I have a screen protector on so the scratching thing won't matter, I don't have dead pixels and if there is a screen lottery, I definitely
Won it as did my friend. I'm starting to think the screen lottery is overblown and rather, a very small number of systems got screwed.

Heck remember viewers saying while docked they couldn't get the Switch to 100% battery while playing Zelda? Has t been an issue. I hit 100% surprisingly fast.

It's not perfect. I understand the lack of some features at launch and friend codes is so weird to see back, even if temporary until their online service or app is resdy. I don't get power complaints though. Thing is a tablet. Seems plenty powerful to me.

You're making a lot of presumptions. Nintendo have never indicated they view the Switch as a handheld or a hybrid, they've repeatedly reiterated that it is a home console much like the Wii U.
3DS production is continuing and their launch window line up doesn't include anything which is primarily designed for handheld play. They may very well have a 3DS successor in a couple of years, I'd find it hard to believe that they'd be willing to abandon the pocket sized device market when its always been their most successful.
Not really?

Both ead and Pokemon team have talked about it being their next target. It's getting a mainline fire emblem that, since it's revival, has been handheld only. The majority of its ad time is shown in undocked form, either as a handheld or as a portable tabletop console. And in many billboards in Japan it was shown as a handheld.

The main reason is because Switch isn't in the handheld market price range. It's nothing to do with size.

Once prices fall those games will come. They already have games like Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei, spiritual successor of Bravely Default announced. I'm sure in a few years the next Pokémon and Monster will be on the system. Let's see if Pokémon Stars rumour is true as well.

At the moment Switch is marketed mainly as a high end device for young adults to take big games on the go like Zelda. But in a year or 2 it will be marketed as a games console for kids with appealing games like Pokémon with a price where parents wouldn't mind paying.

I feel like shipping the Switch without the base, making it completely optional, and charging $250 for the Switch instead would of been perfect, but the base is a mainstay for their marketing and promotion, so I dunno.
Your suggestion would mean throwing away 45$ of margin per unit.

Switch is a native independent handheld device. The WiiU is a gigantic controller with a terrible screen in which a console tied to a tv must remain powered and rarely works once you leave the same room as the console. You have a controller that is massively larger than the Switch with a screen that is downright terrible in comparison. That requires running wirelessly from a console that must be powered and running. That you are tired into being basically in the same room as.

Switch is a full on handheld, you power it on, you switch games, you play wherever. You never even have to have anything ever plugged into a tv.

They are not even close to being comparable. WiiU wanted to be a Switch but failed in execution of a handheld/console hybrid.

Personally I wouldn't have minded a refinement to the Wii U. Keep it a console that's the same size or even smaller than the original Wii U, increase the wireless range significantly, improve the screen, make the controller more sleek with better battery life. Nintendo's trying to be a jack of all trades, master of none with the Switch. Instead of the Switch being one device, it should be a platform that has a console and a handheld that can play the same library. Have a baseline spec for handheld which the current Switch spec works fine. Then have a console that runs on a much more powerful Tegra spec and runs the games at a better performance level. Kind of like PS4 to PS4 Pro. They are hedging all their bets on the Switch concept, but if it backfires I fear they have no backup plan in place. The Switch is definitely too expensive if you're trying to treat it like a 3DS for your kids, and the 3DS is too old to remain relevant in the coming years, so they need to figure out how they are going to keep that market.

As someone who was on the fence of first day purchase I appreciate this discussion. However, all the people who posts toxic posts like "Show me where Reggie touched you on the doll" should be immediately banned. Such posts bring nothing to the gaf community.

On topic I believe OP's points are valid unless some of you can show that he's way off. Fortunately, as M$ as shown software can be improved and make a console better. For the rest we will see. But one thing is for sure I will be getting one before the end of 2017 regardless of all the negatives because Vita support will probably go down more now that the Switch is out.

Havok out!!!

Eh, this happens with every single console release. A selection of very few people who like it take offense to it. Shouldn't be unexpected.

I felt bad for OP Because they made a solid effort post lol

How likely will Nintendo redesign a model in 2 years like XBox S and Ps4 slim?

I still do not understand how that joycon issue somehow did not get noticed during the developmental and testing process. The device that is made for your hands gets its signal disrupted by your hands (and other wireless devices)? Same with the scratching.
There's no reason to assume that these issues were unknown to them. It's about them deciding whether it's worth addressing or not.

Very likely. No matter the actual (Western-focus) narrative Nintendo says actually, the Switch is a handheld device. And Nintendo handheld devices are always redesigned in 2 years or less.

Literally turned off every device in the house except for the modem, router and Switch. I still can't connect to wifi. I'm at my wits end.

I find Nintendo hardware very odd when connecting to Wifi.

On my new 3DS XL, i was not able to find a connection to my main wifi. I switch over to a guest account and there it is. Switch back, and its gone again.

Nintendo has combined their portable and console development teams. Their whole goal with the switch is only having to develop for one platform.

The days of separate nintendo consoles and handheld are over. They might sell different package types but the internal hardware will remain the same.

Yet the rate at which they release first party games seems more in line with the wiiu so far and not in line with two consoles coming together.

I think it's pretty simple really: if you look at the console as your next home console it sucks hard, if you look at it as your next handheld it's awesome, that's all there is to it.

Yeah, as a home console the Switch is just woeful. Which is why I am passing on it after initially being excited and hopeful. The specs, features and pricing are an absolute joke when compared to PS4 and Xbox One.

Also we havent seen any handheld-like games being announced. And if they do it better not be $60.

So loving the shit out of this system so far, only a few minor gripes: no Bluetooth headphones support, needing a dock to play on television when a hdmi on the unit would be more versatile

All minor stuff, but my biggest complaint by far is the texture of the dpad on the pro controller. It's like a mix of cardboard and sandpaper

Eh, it doesn't work like this. It means games will don't appear in multiple devices at same or almost same time, like Mario Kart. We know Arms is a project from the Mario Kart team, so now they have more time to try to do new things.

I absolutely agree with the OP. I do not like the system or the OS (though I do like the Pro controller). It feels like a very half-assed launch. But I really like Zelda, which is why I bought the system in it's current state, docking scratches and Joycon desyncing be damned.

But seriously, I'm already getting scratches on this system from the dock and I'm handling the system as carefully as a newborn.

At this stage, although Nintendo have hinted and the media has speculated, there is no evidence to suggest they are bringing handheld titles to the Switch. Nintendo are on the fence because presumably if the Switch disappoints we will get a new DS system.

As soon as a mainline Pokemon title (Stars) is announced, the outlook for the Switch improves dramatically.

Fire Emblem? It's a handheld franchise since almost a decade lol

I don't think the Switch makes any sense at all as a product if it does not replace both the traditional console and the traditional handheld.

Bruh. It's been a day. Before you show your bias, wait a bit. Also, why the Miyamoto quote when Koizumi is the Switch Manager?
It's not showing bias if you want to discuss nagative aspects of a device you just paid 300 bucks for. If you don't think they should be criticized for some of the obvious oversights then you are most likely the one who is biased. The switch launch feels like a soft launch rather than one where Nintendo had all its ducks in a row.

The screen scratching issue, the fact that Zelda runs better in portable mode, the joy con de-sync issue, the fact that you need to by another joy con controller grip that has a charging port just to charge the controllers when they're not docked, etc. these are stupid ass issues. Then there's the accessory prices. It's all pretty ridiculous and Nintendo is hoping the premise of the system is enough for people to overlook its flaws and some people can't. The Joycon issue especially strikes me as an apple style problem. Remember when apple
Was telling people they were holding their phones wrong? This feels like the same thing.

I'll take it a step further and say this feels like the Nintendo vita. The hardware seems okay but is plagued by questionable and downright bad choices. The vita comparison makes even more sense when you factor in the hidden costs. Instead of memory cards being the over priced hidden cost, with the switch it's EVERYTHING else. 70 bucks for a controller? 100 bucks for an additional dock? Lol gtfo. The only thing that will keep this from being the Nintendo vita, at least for a while, is Nintendo themselves because they don't have any other options. Sony did as they had the PS3 and PS4. Nintendo has the 3ds and that thing is six years old.

I keep forgetting how much of a sacred cow Nintendo is here on gaf. This thread is a great reminder that some of you would let Nintendo executives shit in your mouths if you got a new system out of it.

Bummer some are having bad experiences.

I agree with a lot of the OPs points about it being a half baked beta OS and launch but I'm not having any of the physical hardware problems. Controller stays sync'd no matter what I do in my living room and the Wi-Fi has been fine. No scratches. No game crashing.

I'm loving the hardware and an excited for it's future.

Less than 36 hours after getting the system and the screen protector is already peeling across the top. As long as I don't undock it before I pick up a glass replacement I should be fine.

I really like it as well. A lot of my current complaints can be fixed via firmware, but I don't like that the joycon issue got past QA or the scratching of screens. I myself have experienced the joycon issue with my grey joycons (only a few times in a somewhat strange position). My neon work perfectly.

While I'm sure there are people who own one with genuine concerns, I feel that a lot of what you see here in the complaint threads are just examples of confirmation bias. This is why most people hop in like "I knew I was right to wait, I always knew the thing was no good!". The reality is that anyone who buys day one typically knows what they're in for in regards to early issues or software that'll be updated over time.

Failing low energy NeoGAF with its fake-console agenda. Sad!

Just wait unti the Ditects start rolling, every month will be like Christmas and every Direct like E3. Each month a aurprise game will be released and features will be added.
Gamecube virtual console, video recording, netflix, browser and other apps, Mario Sunshine HD, FZero Online, Metroid, Online Virtual console, Mother 3, Four Swords, Pikmin, Donkey Kong, Platinum 202 & Bayo 3, Xeno 2, Pokemon, Wave Race, Nintendo Sports Club, Nintendo Fit, Arms, MK8, Spla2, FE Warriors, Mario Odyssey. This will be the best year a console ever had.

Thing is, do you think Nintendo would change something like saves tied to systems? They love the "tie something to the system" idea and just don't want to let it go. Maybe we'l'l see a patch that allows you to sync online for those paying for their sub.

Actually pretty surprised how ok I am with using single joycons. Played FAST RMX and Snipperclips for 2 hours last night..no issues. Was fine with it.

Nintendo's QA is clearly not strong enough though. Between the 3DS issues and complaints about some docks being too tight and angled..along with concerns about consistency in screens..and then the joycon connectivity issue..Nintendo just isn't strict enough in their Quality department it seems. That's probably my biggest concern with Nintendo in general right now. Everything else in the OP really isn't a big deal to me other than lack of cloud saves. In fact I find some of your negatives to be strong positives.

I think the OS is great and simple. Joycons work really well. 'Portable gimmick' is awesome. I actually thought the Switch had one of the most interesting and unique launch lineups in 15 years (Zelda, Snipperclips, FAST RMX >>> every launch back to the GameCube to me personally).

Good title change. While it doesn't excuse al the ad hominem shit that has been flung at OP, the tile was, well, provoking. This is much better and will hopefully keep the embarrassing shitshow that was the first few pages (particularly the first one, holy heck) from happening again.

Yeah the first page is a graveyard already. Polite discussion would be welcomed from both sides of the argument.

You clearly haven't ever used that feature on the Wii U, because 1) It's laughably inadequate. You can't just copy the save, you can only copy it along with the game and all its updates and DLC. 2) It doesn't even let you transfer it to another console, so it doesn't actually solve the problem you're claiming it does.

An imperfect solution is not the same as no solution

Not sure this is true. Zelda then Mario Kart then Arms then Splatoon 2 then Mario. When you add Snipperclips into the mix (albeit co-developed) a chance of Xenoblade 2 plus I'm guessing some unannounced stuff (like Metros game and Rabbids universe which seems to be codeveloped with Ubisoft, also Smash Port and a new Pikmin game).

Seems way more first party output than WiiU.
