Blaster Master Zero |OT| A Blast from the Past

To those who are already playing, are you using the stick or the directional buttons? Curious to know if the d-buttons work okay in place of a traditional d-pad.

I use the directional buttons when in the tank and the stick when controlling the dude. Stick is better when controlling the character because of how you can move in (I think) eight directions (think Contra 3's overhead) but in the tank the directional buttons work better I think for movement. However the stick works fine with the tank movement as well.

Also this game is super fun and looks very crisp on the tablet. Do not regret this purchase whatsoever. Would've felt okay about $20 so far but this is half that.

I found the same control preference to work as well. I switch to the d-pad when I need things to be more precise.

No 3D on 3DS after all eh. Well that stinks but I can't say I'm surprised. Do they at least put a map on the bottom screen or something?

I'll probably buy it anyway, waiting on an actual review of the 3DS version.

Sadly it's been a trend lately. Since I have a Switch, that's the version I'll get. The 3DS version would be redundant since it offers nothing unique, and Switch gives you both portable and console in one.

Just curious, how do you mean? Gameplay limits, visuals?

I think both visually and mechanically it could've had more time to bake in the oven. I've never played Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, because I don't own a 3DS but it looks really cool graphically and mechanically. When you get upgrades in Blaster Master Zero, they help out and make the game a bit more fun but overall the gameplay stays relatively the same throughout.

I see. Thanks for the reply.

I'm still enjoying it a lot though, it's a great pick up and play kind of game which the Switch is perfect for. It gives me Mega Man X vibes too in terms of the general soul and look of the HUD and inventory menu.

Gotcha. I'm gonna buy it. For $10, why not. And I want to support indies on Switch.

Absolutely, was about to comment on this. Funny enough it reminds me of Mega Man Zero too, and it definitely has a Metroidvania thing going on. In fact when I was wrapping up my first session I was thinking that this is exactly what I want from oldschool type games on Switch, the hybrid nature means that it's a fit for both big games like Breath of the Wild and 2D games for the tablet screen. And it's widescreen and very crisp so just imagine if say Konami would stop being a giant asshole and developed a new 2D Castlevania for Switch with even better pixel art and in widescreen.

It would literally be the most glorious shit ever if they would just allow for this console to scratch both of those itches and this game is a prime example of that. It's fun, retro, looks good, is cheap, and provides a healthy dose of nostalgia. That's all I really want from IP's like Mega Man or Castlevania if I'm being honest.

Same, the more retro titles and newer games can coexist on the Switch the better.

As far as Castlevania is concerned at least it's confirmed that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is coming to the Switch, but we've got quite a wait.

Just finished playing for an hour. The game is legitimately wicked awesome amazeballs. It is easier than the original but the controls are great and everything about the game is neat. I believe if this is what is in store for the Switch we are good to go as Switch owers. Handheld indies, first party awesome and old school throwbacks would make for one hell of a ride.

How intrusive are the story bits? One of the reasons I couldn't stand Ducktales Remastered was how often the game loved to stop you in your tracks to give you a ridiculous amount of worthless exposition.

And I can't wait, but it's still not Castlevania proper-- I'm happy that Bloodstained is coming, the demo I played was cool enough for an early build and I think it'll end up turning out quite well, but I need Belmonts and Dracula and shit. Maybe the console will prompt Konami to look into it, but that company these days, yikes. Do not misinterpret-- I have little hope for that lol

Bought it but I think I'm waiting for that pro controller patch. Awkward to play with the buttons and stick.
Granted I only played for about fifteen minutes so maybe I'd get used to it if I keep going.

Hollow Knight is coming to Switch sometime this year.

I agree, nothing like Castlevania proper. I always wanted to play Rondo of Blood, would make a great Switch port if you ask me, obviously only the PC Engine version though.

A boy, named Jason, hops on Sophia to go chase Fred, a frog.

Love it

That's all the plot we needed in the day.

The game play and bold new things we never saw before....those were the things that made it worth it.

For so many of us....the NES really did show us new things beyond imagination. It's also probably why some of us complain so much now these days.

I tried the stick, but at the end of the day I decided to use the direction buttons. Surprisingly, it works pretty well. Been kickin' ass and doing lots of exploring so far.

Just downloaded :D

Blaster Master Zero, Zelda, SnipperClips, Shovel Knight, in a week's time Binding of Isaac and then Snake Pass.

This is probably the most packed a launch has ever been for me. I can't think of another system I've ever picked up this many games for in the first month. And all but one are Co-Op! What a wonderful little system

You know its funny I was thinking the same. So much for everyone else being all sad for the aenemic launch, turns out there is tons for me. (and you!)

i hear u (older gamer here)

was browsing on twitter earlier. Saw Game Informer post "Next Uncharted will have more space/ be bigger)" or something to that effect. I wonder how much bigger can a game get and do we need these saturating the market?

This game is nice to have alongside Zelda. The juxtapostion pleases me.

Best use of HD rumble in a game I own so far.

Yeah, it's the first game I've played to use it and it really is the next-gen feedback. Well played Nintendo. Now, about transferring save files.

Wow the rumble in the game feels impressive right away. Really loving it so far.

Agreed, it feels really cool when you charge up your laser shot.

Fucksake i was going to wait for the DLC Gunvolt Characters, bought.

YOU GUYS ARE TOO HYPE! D:

I just bought Snipperclips for me and my GF yesterday and it was 29$CAD.

I'm soooo tempted to buy this one at 10$ now, this and FAST RMX, but that's another story. :p

Any statement on how long the game is so far?

It's on the radar for sure.

Rondo is fantastic. I would say one of the better Castlevania games but most of them are one of the better Castlevania games to me. But it's definitely top-tier when it comes to the stage-based ones along with Dracula's Curse and Super.
