What is a possible Microsoft answer to Horizon Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild?

I don't remember the article but the writer said that the game shown at press conferences, which he heavily implied the second reveal, and the game shown behind closed doors were almost two different games.

Edit: Found it. It's not explicitly stated but you can make a pretty rational deduction as to what was happening. Especially considering Kamiya's frustrations with MS during the dev cycle.

Implied. Nothing set in stone.

Haha, I see what you did there. I think your statement is still true though. :p

What? A: no one knows if that's true or not, and B: how is adding coop a bad thing? The main reason I was hyped was cuz me and my buddies were gonna ride around on our customized dragons together. Had the game been strictly single player, I wouldn't have been as hyped for it. Yeah, I still would've wanted it, but I don't see how adding Multiplayer is a bad thing at all.

OT here: Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, and Sea of Thieves are gonna be some amazing open-world experiences. I think those will be pretty good answers in my book. Plus I'll get to enjoy them all with friends, which makes it even better. :D

This was never ever going to work in this game.

Come on bro, game looked like trash before they showed the 4 player co-op. For all the praise Platinum gets they shit the bed pretty hard with this.

Game also ran like trash if it (probably) couldn't run on Scorpio target specs because this could have been a showcase game for them. Things must have been really fucking bad for this to be canceled this late.

I honestly don't understand the hate Scalebound gets other than the coop gameplay which did look pretty awful and shoehorned in for some "Dudebro" vibes. The original gameplay reveal looked like the game was going to be a neat open world RPG similar to Dragon's Dogma but with Platinum combat. I mean coop just seems like such an unnecessary addition to an RPG like this.

Sadly, Microsoft doesn't seem to have first party studios or even the desire to do something as ambitious.

I'd shit my pants if they released an open world Banjo or Conker game tho!

Halo is FPS built around competitive play. I think question was referring to a game in similar genre. And neither Zelda nor Horizon are either companies biggest games so Halo would be competing against Uncharted/TLOU or Mario Kart/Pokemon/Smash under your terms of pure sales and it would still lose as of recent.

He meant it as a counter do to implying the Xbox is in trouble do to games and you know that, the rest of your post is irrelevant.

I could see them hiring a small dev house to remake Banjo for its 20th anniversary and/or give VR a shot with the IP.

The quote said "do you know how much Microsoft first party IP sell?" They sell less than those games I mentioned so yeah it is relevant. One game can't prop you up forever and the two biggest first party games are declining in sales each installment. They new some new fresh hits badly. Zelda isn't exactly new although it was completely revamped to the point of being new, but Splatoon was a massive new IP for them.

Forza Horizon 4
Really, if they're already trying some new things with the next one, this is the best answer for something short-term. I think there are a lot of companies right now that are trying to figure this out. Hopefully not copying or anything, just being inspired and building upon what is already in front of us today.

Think it was a jest post

Why not? Just curious :). I'm a believer that the game was cancelled for good reasons, and I probably have a better game imagined in my head than what was actually going to happen. However, to say the game wouldn't work, I'm just wondering why you would say that.

This thread is silly. Why does every company need to have a thing? The thing in this case being a well-made open world game?

If you want to play Horizon or BotW, buy the consoles they're on.

Imagine Dragon's Dogma with coop instead of the pawn system. *shudder*

Did you?

The last figure we have for Halo 5 was "5 million". Assuming that's sold-through, I would say Zelda is a lock to exceed that mark (it's Zelda and critically acclaimed), and Horizon has a good chance to do so as well (it sold 2.6 million in its first two weeks). Do you disagree? As for SoT and Scalebound, I'm not sure what you were trying to say there.

" it's zelda" is a pointless statement since not all zelda sell 7-8+ million. Your acting as if "it's zelda" means the series is guaranteed something. How was SS? I mean it could happen I just think your reason doesn't make sense

As for Horizon, a lot of games have been front loaded this gen. No idea why Horizon is going to be an exception. I'm not saying it won't reach 5 million, but I do think saying horizons 2.6 is going to translate to legs is unlikely.

My post to the op was saying they don't need to counter because they have sales in other general. Ops post is clearly a continuation of the Xbox is in trouble threads. Which they are not.

And as you see in this reply, either Sea of thieves don't exist or Rare is not a Microsoft's 1st party.

Crackdown. If done right, the destruction could be incredible

Honest question, Zelda was groundbreaking obviously, but how did Horizon elevate the genre to new heights? The game was just a well executed Tomb Raider + Far Cry. I can't think of a single thing it did that was particularly groundbreaking aside from graphics

I don't mind "Dudebro", was hyped for it at the start, however everything after just diminished it. Poor main protagonist design, absolute silence around the project for a very long time. Then comes poor presentation by Platinum. Developer going on crazy rants on twitter, more silence. More of the same poor presentation not showing the progression people expected.

People can blame Microsoft as much as they want for this failure but if a game was that bad they had to cut their losses this late it must have been in a mindbogglingly trash status.

For a game where they dedicated such a big part of their team to they failed to create any excitement for their biggest title yet.

Those two games? I'm still waiting for an answer for splatoons and uncharted from MS. Same could be said for Halo for those other two consoles (killzone and metroid prime doesn't count) .

They dont.

Because Halo is not the only game they have.

You think Xbox selling toward 30 million consoles is only on halo?

If I'm not mistaken they only showed the game off twice? E3 and then Gamescom? Correct me if I'm wrong. I won't disagree about the character, he was lame as hell. Rants on twitter are indicative of development troubles, of course. But just based on what I've read I'm inclined to believe publisher intrusions as the main reason for this. It seemed like Kamiya and MS had two different visions for the game and when the mingling of those visions didn't turn out to be worth releasing, they canned it.

Yeah, it's call "Dragon's Dogma Online".

And it has both systems.

Yeah, and there's a reason its not called Dragon's Dogma 2 and why it's F2P.

Don't get me wrong, your idea of what this game should've been is great and I believe that's what some executives at MS were hoping for.
What they've shown from the singleplayer ran like ass. How many open world games with 4 player coop have we seen so far? PG and Kamiya have bitten of more than they could chew, it seems to me.

is forza horizon a role playing game ?

Phil spencer theres an idea

give the car from forza some quests to do in the open world

As close as a car game will get.

You level up your driver
You level up your festivals
You gain XP from almost everything you do

It's an open world racing RPG for all intents and purposes.
