I literally just bought an Xbox One S for the fucking UHD blu ray. Super annoying, and anyone downplaying the exclusion of a UHD drive from the PS4 Pro is an asshole.

Nah, they just don't have a 4K TV.

When I didn't have one I thought it was irrelevant too. Now that I have one I can't believe Sony would be so inept.

So did I, and boy was it a pain to set up. I had to restore my tv to factory defaults to get the Xbox to even display in 4k. It's been gathering dust until we get some more blu rays.

Planet Earth II just came out today... pretty much why I bought a Xbox One S lol.

Yup, had to do the same.

But watching the Planet Earth II UHD discs makes me very happy!
Both for the content and to FINALLY have some something that really max out my 4K HDR TV. Feels good, man.

Now I just need to play a game on that damn thing so that the purchase (instead of a standalone UHD player) is justified lol

Since the time I came in this topic and got screamed at about no one caring about this except on message boards, I know half a dozen casual gamers who bought an XBox One S instead of this.

I continue to have two 4K TVs with only one UHD player, which sucks.

I didn't really sympathize with this thread until now

I've got a brand new 4K TV and shit Internet so 4K streaming is questionable. PS4 Pro under the TV just wreaks of inadequacy and I've got the lingering fear that they'll add in UHD bluray on some better model soon :'(

Is the laser on the PS4 not capable of reading them or could this be potentially be added via software upgrade?

Laser. Sony cheaped out. It would have cost them an extra $8-14 estimated to include the needed hardware. Sony is on its last legs though and needs as much profit as possible. This is the new conservative Sony and not the Krazy Ken days.

Well that sucks, i don't share that problem because i don't have a 4K set. But even if i did the selection available (4K discs) is very limited ATM.

True but it is far better than any other 4K option. If only Disney would get its shit together and offer Rogue One and Force Awakens in 4K with HDR.

Just wait till this year as 4K tv sales are expect to almost quadruple last years. Black friday and yet your Sony 4K tv, with a Sony Pictures, Sony developed 4K UHD disc, cannot be played on your Sony 4K console.

Missed opportunity. And those downplaying it know it too, but would rather call rest of us shills, or pretend the near useless 4K Netflix and Amazon content is any way comparable to Mad Max UHD, etc. Cannot wait to buy Planet Earth II.

I spent the past week watching the UHD Blu-ray version of Planet Earth II on an LG B6 OLED TV, connected to an Xbox One S. You won't be disappointed, And, yes, baffling that Sony also didn't bite on this opportunity.

Just got my 65E6 set up over the weekend. Watched Pacific Rim in UHD (very nice but with the soap opera effect aka TruMotion).

Planet Earth II showed up today, hope to enjoy that as much as we did the first one on HD-DVD.

I have a 4K TV & I'm downplaying the exclusion of a UHD drive.

Why? because the Disc isn't a big deal in this day & age & UHD Blu-rays are basically Blu-ray discs using better encoding & as long as PS4 Pro & other media boxes can play new formats UHD Blu-rays will not be missed,

No UHD drive might bother some but not me because I love setting up media severs & it's getting easier for people to manage their own media servers , also you have these cheap Android TV boxes that can also double as NAS & DLNA boxes with large HDD that can send 4K media to your 4K TV & other devices. you can even hook the HDD right up to your PS4 & other devices.

I really don't think UHD Blu-ray with 100GB was worth starting a new format for I think it's a stop gap format that will be mostly overlooked & they will try to replace it with another format in a few years but that format will probably bomb pretty bad.

Can we stop spreading this nonsense like it's fact?

Just because the drive in the Xbone S cost something, does not mean Sony would have used the same drive...And we all know the S, while cheap, is not EXACTLY the best player on the market. The fact of the matter is, there were many factors at play...Only one of them being price

Dude, you don't have to suffer through TruMotion. Just turn it off! Even if your TV doesn't support stutter-free playback of 24fps, the microstutter from the conversion to 25/30 fps by the uhd player should still be more pleasent.

The absence of 4K UHD on Pro is lamentable but from a strategy standpoint it made a lot of sense for them and it really hasn't hurt them broadly.

Personally I would've liked it as I also bought Planet Earth 2 in 4K and I'd like to watch it like that, but it is what it is.

It affects me as a user, but I can see why strategically they didn't put it in.

Basically I'm going to wait for either Scorpio or PS5 for my UHD player, most likely PS5 unless Scorpio gives me an indication Xbox will return as more than a third party machine. Or if a $100 UHD player comes out from Sony or Samsung I'll buy that.

The more likely reason that Sony didn't include the capability to play 4K Blu-rays on the Pro is because the PS4 sells well enough for just gaming alone. They would rather that consumers buy one of their more expensive dedicated 4K Blu-ray players instead.

I was in best buy the other day and say how abysmal the 4k selection was. I think streaming is just to big Now physical movies are dying.

I am amazed at how active of a thread this still is. I understand people are upset, but from sonys perspective if they sell 2million ps4pros and it cost them $8 for a 4K drive, then that's $16million. That's not a laughable amount of dough.

This is obviously true but mainly it is an argument for selling identical products. It gets more complicated when we talk about different products. And yes a pro with 4k bluray is actually a different product.

Sometimes I wonder if this forum (and more surprisingly even Sony?) realize that the pro aint the mass market product ps4 were even though it costs the same. A $250 console that plays the same games will always sell more than a $400 console. You sell pro on features and power, not amazing value. No 4k bluray was a mistake!
The power for games and the boost mode feature for games is enough for me. I truly am sorry they didn't add in a 4K Blu Ray player for televison for the rest of you.

Yes. Because it likely would have been even cheaper than that to get a UHD drive...
Or at the very least they would still make far more profit than MS does with the XB1S per unit.
But it would have meant to also put that drive into the Slim due to their production pipe line.

And that not-best-player in the world argument is irrelevant if we just talk about image quality and not features for standalone players.
The guy in the PE2 review above used a XB1S as well.

i think i read rumors somewhere of a new Ps4 slim. maybe it is a super slim or a Ps4 pro slim. if it is the latter what if there is 4K blu ray included? it'd be more like a pro premium.

No. It's cause UHD was dead before it even started, even Sony had no faith in the product.

Proof is this thread.

Physical formats are dead guys. Nobody is going back after all the advancements of digital.

But this media player with update for 4K playback isn't the same as XB1S's Blu-ray app which allows UHD blu-ray movie discs to be played at 4K, right?
Yes not the same since I can see people pirating 4k movies and watching them on the pro now. Still I appreciate the 4k media support to watch downloaded YouTube 4k vids

Lol I wonder how many One S systems were sold today due to Planet Earth II, wouldn't be surprised if Xbone is the console leader for March or April.

I literally was debating with myself all day if I should buy one. Deciding to just get the regular Blu Ray as I knew it would just gather dust for the majority of the time

What? The only proof in this thread is that people very much care about UHD.
People not wanting to get the best out of their (future) thousand+ $ 4K TV is another story.

No one thinks UHD will be a thing for the mass market any time soon. Even Blu-ray isn't really but there will always be an enthusiast market. And that market adopts UHD faster than Blu-ray was back then.

When streaming picks up even more, UHD will be the only relevant disc format because people who now still buy DVDs won't buy movies at all any more while people who care about quality will still have to buy discs - but of course only UHD.

For some reason I don't feel like this thread would of lasted this long if Physical format was "Dead". Its really to early to tell because 4k movies still cost a lot more than DVD and digital . NO I don't think it will actually compete with digital but I think it may do better that "dead" in peoples minds

Oh really?

You think interest of physical formats are driving this thread? Lol

It's a goddam graveyard in here.

You just end up feeling sorry for some folk after reading this thread. Makes me wanna bake them some cornbread.

gotta get planet earth 2 now. Thnx guys

Same. It's not quite as mind-blowing as I was expecting, though.

A thread of GAF is not a good measure of... anything, really.

Sony no doubt conducted their own research, and made a decision that UHD Blu-Ray playback wasn't worth including. I can't really blame them because all signs indicate that physical media uptake is getting more and more niche. It does annoy me on a personal level, because holy christ do I ever want to watch that Planet Earth 2 UHD Blu-Ray!
