Oh dear..Media player got an update which supports 4k playback on the pro.
I literally just bought an Xbox One S for the fucking UHD blu ray. Super annoying, and anyone downplaying the exclusion of a UHD drive from the PS4 Pro is an asshole.

So did I, and boy was it a pain to set up. I had to restore my tv to factory defaults to get the Xbox to even display in 4k. It's been gathering dust until we get some more blu rays.

Planet Earth II just came out today... pretty much why I bought a Xbox One S lol.

Is the laser on the PS4 not capable of reading them or could this be potentially be added via software upgrade?
Laser. Sony cheaped out. It would have cost them an extra $8-14 estimated to include the needed hardware. Sony is on its last legs though and needs as much profit as possible. This is the new conservative Sony and not the Krazy Ken days.

Well that sucks, i don't share that problem because i don't have a 4K set. But even if i did the selection available (4K discs) is very limited ATM.
I spent the past week watching the UHD Blu-ray version of Planet Earth II on an LG B6 OLED TV, connected to an Xbox One S. You won't be disappointed, And, yes, baffling that Sony also didn't bite on this opportunity.

Nah, they just don't have a 4K TV.
When I didn't have one I thought it was irrelevant too. Now that I have one I can't believe Sony would be so inept.
Can we stop spreading this nonsense like it's fact?Laser. Sony cheaped out. It would have cost them an extra $8-14 estimated to include the needed hardware. Sony is on its last legs though and needs as much profit as possible. This is the new conservative Sony and not the Krazy Ken days.
Just got my 65E6 set up over the weekend. Watched Pacific Rim in UHD (very nice but with the soap opera effect aka TruMotion).

Just because the drive in the Xbone S cost something, does not mean Sony would have used the same drive...And we all know the S, while cheap, is not EXACTLY the best player on the market. The fact of the matter is, there were many factors at play...Only one of them being price

The power for games and the boost mode feature for games is enough for me. I truly am sorry they didn't add in a 4K Blu Ray player for televison for the rest of you. This is obviously true but mainly it is an argument for selling identical products. It gets more complicated when we talk about different products. And yes a pro with 4k bluray is actually a different product.
Sometimes I wonder if this forum (and more surprisingly even Sony?) realize that the pro aint the mass market product ps4 were even though it costs the same. A $250 console that plays the same games will always sell more than a $400 console. You sell pro on features and power, not amazing value. No 4k bluray was a mistake!

The more likely reason that Sony didn't include the capability to play 4K Blu-rays on the Pro is because the PS4 sells well enough for just gaming alone. They would rather that consumers buy one of their more expensive dedicated 4K Blu-ray players instead.
Yes not the same since I can see people pirating 4k movies and watching them on the pro now. Still I appreciate the 4k media support to watch downloaded YouTube 4k vidsBut this media player with update for 4K playback isn't the same as XB1S's Blu-ray app which allows UHD blu-ray movie discs to be played at 4K, right?
Nice. I'll probably pick that up next. I can only watch John Wick so many times haha
No. It's cause UHD was dead before it even started, even Sony had no faith in the product.
Proof is this thread.
Physical formats are dead guys. Nobody is going back after all the advancements of digital.
What? The only proof in this thread is that people very much care about UHD.
Not one thinks UHD will be a thing for the mass market EVER.

For some reason I don't feel like this thread would of lasted this long if Physical format was "Dead". Its really to early to tell because 4k movies still cost a lot more than DVD and digital . NO I don't think it will actually compete with digital but I think it may do better that "dead" in peoples minds
There is no limit to the amount of John Wick one can watch
Same. It's not quite as mind-blowing as I was expecting, though.Planet Earth II just came out today... pretty much why I bought a Xbox One S lol.
Oh really?
You think interest of physical formats are driving this thread? Lol
It's a goddam graveyard in here.

Maybe that rumor with a new revision of the PS4/Pro would update the drive?
