Doubtful. At best we get a tease next year.

well, I would say that the Scorpio announcement at E3 last year would be a tease as well. But thats what I'm getting at. The could counteract the Scorpio arrival with an announcement, it will sure put some people on hold for a while.

So guys,

What are the odds that Sony will 'announce' the "PS5" this E3, just as Microsoft announced Scorpio? They would only have to drop a few names like 'Zen & Vega based architecture' and 'fully backwards compatible' with PS4 / PS4 pro. They can ride on that hype easily if the "PS5" releases in november 2018. Then it would have been a 5 year cycle as well.

Lol.

That isn't going to happen.

Zero chance of that. A "PS5" is a loooong way off still.

Scorpio has native 4K vs checkboard for PS4 Pro.

I don't think that's going to be he case for the vast majority of titles. They'll go 4k rendering technique as well.

As they should. Dying on a 4k native marketing hill seems stupid when you can almost indistinguishably do 4k and put the power better to use elsewhere.

900P was an issue because it created a noticeable vasaline smear artifact. Checkboard causes the digital foundry guys to get 2 inches from a 40" screen to just try to find someone artifacts as they nod how impressed they are with the rendering techniques at play.

Checkboard and provide more frames and better graphics. I'm guessing that's what we'll see with the vast majority of titles.

Nah, not this year. But next year with a 2019 release? Absolutely.

I still doubt it. Sony skyrocketed ahead this generation by releasing a cheaper console at right around the same time as MS. If they push ahead with an entirely new console this soon, the staggered would release would surely hurt them in the long run.

Why do people always expect some kind of magic counter? Sony wont announce shit for another couple of years.
Wouldnt even be suprised if we will see nothing until 2021 or 2022

Mid Cycle refresh is pretty much a straight role reversal. Xbox One had 900P vs native 1080p for Sony.

Scorpio has native 4K vs checkboard for PS4 Pro.
If Scorpio goes for native 4K Vs Pro going for checkerboard 4K...the scorpio version will look or run worse that much I can guarantee. The power difference isn't big enough to make that big of a resolution jump at same quality.

What you'll likely see is this:

1) More games achieving checkerboard 4K than Pro (not that many Pro games are checkerboard 4K)
2) The games that are like 1600P or 1800P on Pro will be a bit higher resolution on Scorpio OR they'll be at the same resolution but have additional graphical effects/framerate stability.

Project Scorpio - the best one yet, surely, but ultimately still won't get me buying one unless the game library improves a lot.

This is the big thing that people need to realize. Even though it may make current games look way better and same with multi-platform games, if they don't improve their own exclusive library, I don't think it's going to pan out the way they want it to.

Sony doesn't need to do this.

Yeah, I think it's just 2.0 *NOT* 2.1. Was a point of confusion/wrong assumption!

Probably won't see any real 2.1 devices for a while. :(
God damnit man. That was what I was hyped about the most since I thought the inclusion of it in Scorpio would open the flood gates much earlier than the expected 2018-19 date.

Imagine the lowest number it comes to mind (it can be a negative number). Did you mentalize it? Is lower than that.

If they really did develop hardware to handle the DX12 API fully, then that was possibly a better investment then moving to a Zen chip.

The real question is.. How is the PS4 Pro selling? To me Sony was reaching a point with the PS4 where the sales were still good but decelerating at a quicker rate than previous years.

I would imagine the Scorpio selling in the same ballpark as PS4 Pro since it is essentially the same ask for their potential buyers.. If the x1 sales werent that impressive anyways I would guess they have gotten worse since the Scorpio announcement because people were waiting up to purchase. Could be good news since people will shift up to the new platform.. but bad because the x1s wont have legs much longer.
Well Asia is completely starved of PS4 Pro stock, people have been unable to get hold of one for months.

A lot of you guys need to stop with the constant "oh, well I can play those games on a PC"

Not everyone can or wants to spend the $700 just to get a 1080 Ti to play most things at 4k60 max.

I just built a new PC with a 1080 Ti, and there are plenty of games that I will be playing on Scorpio because of the 25 or so people I play games with on Xbox/PS4, two have gaming PCs. Step out of your bubbles and understand that there is an entire population of gamers who will never play games on PC.

The Scorpio is for anyone who wants the best version of multiplayer games. That includes things like Battlefield, COD, and everything going forward.

Yeah, I prefer consoles. For me, this thing is an absolute monster and will serve me for 5-6 years. The power is more than there, as well as modern wizardry in terms of optimization. All with the ease of use of a console. I am beyond impressed.

I'm sure you guys saw the ''Is it better than Pro'' video by Eurogamer right?

Well.....Richard says the name and design will be kept for E3. So Tom Warren was merely speculating that this would be sooner than E3? :(

At $499 Scorpio won't really do anything for Microsoft. Especially when to the average consumer he can get the Pro version of a PS4 cheaper.

I'm still expecting some preemptive price cuts from Sony anyway to not lose their lead.

If Scorpio is $399 and has a Black Friday bundle with a big fall exclusive, then things will be interesting.

What makes you think developers will finally give us all the basics we want? Sure they'll probably release a PS5 but then there will be a glaring omission like there always is.. ie: there won't be a UHD Blu Ray player built in, or something like that, and the guy on stage will think that's all cool as if we weren't all expecting it as a necessity.

I would, that's four years of nothing.

We're getting another iterative update sometime in 2019, 2020 at the latest.

wishful thinking. companies still want to make money. as long as ps4 is going strong, i wouldnt expect anything new yet

Yeah... The console war narrative is really tiring sometimes. Sony and Microsoft do compete in the same space and will of course react to each other, but not at the drop of a hat. That's not how businesses work...

High clock smaller APU is a very smart option. If you can solve the cooling issue, then it gives a much more manageable die size. Onlybeing 4CU more than PS pro but getting that performance is a great result

I'll reserve comment on all the talk of just how custom everything is, because platform holders always say that. For all we know they're still jaguars but MS say 'custom x86' to avoid using the word Jaguar in case of association with lack of performance. Custom plays into their messaging

The D3D built into the GPU command processor could be a pretty big win, at least for those devs using a more standard PC pipeline. But I'd like to see some comments from developers using more streamlined console drivers

Sony is making money hand over fist with ps4, selling roughly 2 ps4's for every xb1 sold. Sony is in no hurry to end that money train and start over from zero again. They are probably thrilled with Scorpio because it represents a commitment to remain in this gen for the next few years.

I watched the video. My takeaway as someone who has no interest in the Xbox brand.

Just like what I felt about PS4Pro, Scorpio feels like Microsoft's original intent for this current gen if there wasn't a need to launch a new hardware back in 2013. Is the upgrade from the original X1 good? Yeah. Will it be a success for them? The nice answer would be 'time will tell' But honestly I don't think it will.

This reminds me of PS2 vs XBox. Microsoft came in to the scene with a more powerful console, yet. Sony's dominance globally couldn't be touched. I bring this up because at the end of the day it's always going to be about these two platforms in a face off. The difference back then from now is that Microsoft can't turn around in a couple years and try to have lightning strike again with a 360. Scorpio is a big play for them. But now the spotlight is back on Sony's response. PlayStation 5.

Sony is also in a position to possibly drop price on Pro, something that isn't going to help the launch of Scorpio.

Microsoft's problem is that they haven't establish a better identity of how they approach games. They still have that shadow of being only popular because of specific titles like Halo, Gears, Forza and their old COD partnership. Even after many exclusives like Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break and timed exclusives from AAA third party pubs and Indie developers. Still something hasn't clicked for them this gen. Especially since their once super popular shooters started to burn out.

When PS3 was falling behind. Sony kept pushing games as the focus and eventually it pushed them forward to hits we know and love. I know many people have been saying this a lot lately. But Microsoft really needs to go super hard with 1st party games. Nintendo hardware has a identity. PlayStation hardware has a identity. But in 2017, What is Xbox? They want to sell you a dedicated box like the others, but you can also have that experience on PC. It's marketing to different audiences, but at what cost? Do you just provide the same experience on both platforms and leave it at that. Or is there a end goal to eventually move everything to PC? It's going to be very interesting watching Microsoft handle the remainder of this year.
