Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

The bigger difference will be what Scorpio can do IN ADDITION to resolution. The RAM, memory bandwidth, and CPU power should make the gap even bigger than what we saw between XB1 and PS4.

XB1 had a better CPU than PS4 but PS4 had a considerable GPU boost. However, both consoles had the same RAM amount and similar memory speeds (although XB1's ESRAM kinda hurt it there).

This will be a big advantage for the Scorpio across the board. CPU, GPU, and memory.

Framerate consistency will be better due to the increased power. Other than that? Considering what we've seen before from 3rd partys? Jack shit.

Reminder that the X1 launched at $499, so MS clearly think it's a consumer-friendly price.

They also had a piece of shit camera packed in nobody wanted and learned a HARD lesson and have been getting their ass spanked this generation. If they make the same mistake again with price it would be laughable. I just refuse to believe MS would be that stupid to make the same mistake two times in a row.

I mean.... when people quote their PC performance, they're always talking about ultra(ish) settings. Consoles do not run games at those settings though. They're always turned down quite a bit.

XBox One game are already running at settings lower than PS4 most of the time. At those settings + 6TF.... I dunno. Maybe I can see 4K\60 happening in recent titles. Maybe.

Oh I was just thinking of future titles to be honest, recent titles... hmm...

I could see Hitman running at reduced graphical fidelity 4k 60fps yea.

At least they DID, before they got immense backlash that maybe was the reason for Mattrick jumping ship, and Phil Spencer immediately releasing a 399 Kinectless SKU while undoing a lot of the mandatory Kinect programming.

Since this is a premium product and more of a 4K upgrade over the One S, I can see 499, but I think MS has learned their lesson. Phil has stated he expects to sell a lot more One Ss than Scorpios, so of course this is only to give people an "enthusiast" option until the next Xbox rolls around. Just as the Elite controller is also just an "enthusiast" option for controllers.

But MS is well aware of what a 499 price point entails, I'm sure.

Because it inevitably means that Microsoft should stop their Play Anywhere program which is great for all parties involved. Why would anyone want exclusives? In an ideal world you could also play all Sony and Nintendo exclusives on PC and the world would be better.

Okay, but we don't live in fantasy land with one console. This is the industry for 30 years. If you own one console, you need a reason to buy another. That reason is games.

GAF isn't 'Sonyland' - and the persecution complex some around here have is tiresome. Things seem more vocal when a company's product has sold (almost?) 60 million units and is outpacing the competition. It was the same when the 360 and Wii were kicking ass.

Well, yeah. That's literally the reason. Doesn't mean it didn't shit up discussions then and now. Though Xbox has never had as many fans as PS but that's neither here nor there.

So guys,

What are the odds that Sony will 'announce' the "PS5" this E3, just as Microsoft announced Scorpio? They would only have to drop a few names like 'Zen & Vega based architecture' and 'fully backwards compatible' with PS4 / PS4 pro. They can ride on that hype easily if the "PS5" releases in november 2018. Then it would have been a 5 year cycle as well.

All the people saying SonyGAF at the middling impressions, need to look back at Pro reveal threads.

No 4K blu Ray drive, not high enough specs, not real 4K and a sea of other complaints.

This is a much better Reception.
Haha yup. Those threads and the ones that followed were an absolute fucking embarrassment.

And jags aren't even suppose to get to 2.3ghz

It's not a simple jaguar cores in this. They clearly said they spent a lot of time customizing the CPU with AMD. Or else not much work needed if just using Pro CPU

6410 boosts to 2.4 Gh (JAG / PUMA). You are wrong. JAG was designed to 2.4 Ghz MAX.

When die shots come out, it will look EXACTLY the same as Ps4 pro as both are 16 nm TSMC...

Maybe Scorpio is just not for him. I mean, I actually don't see the point of owning neither a PRO if you have a strong PC nowadays. Except if you're REALLY into some PS4 titltes and have both time and money to afford all of it.

Thing is... we all know MS won't stop releasing their games for UWP. If that makes an Xbox a no-buy, no issue, just move on.

You're downplaying the power of exclusives. As a PC owner, PS4 has more that "some" strong exclusives. It's argueably the best second gaming platform for PC owners.

I wouldn't say MS won't ever stop releasing their games for UWP. Low sales and not being able to compete with Steam, might bring them back to thinking Xbox only is more profitable.

However, potentially the most exciting aspect surrounding the CPU revamp doesn't actually relate to the processor blocks at all, but rather to the GPU command processor - the piece of hardware that receives instructions from the CPU, piping them through to the graphics core.

"We essentially moved Direct3D 12," says Goossen. "We built that into the command processor of the GPU and what that means is that, for all the high frequency API invocations that the games do, they'll all natively implemented in the logic of the command processor - and what this means is that our communication from the game to the GPU is super-efficient."

Processing draw calls - effectively telling the graphics hardware what to draw - is one of the most important tasks the CPU carries out. It can suck up a lot of processor resources, a pipeline that traditionally takes thousands - perhaps hundreds of thousands - of CPU instructions. With Scorpio's hardware offload, any draw call can be executed with just 11 instructions, and just nine for a state change.

"It's a massive win for us and for the developers who've adopted D3D12 on Xbox, they've told us they've been able to cut their CPU rendering overhead by half, which is pretty amazing because now the driver portion of that is such a tiny fraction," adds Goossen.

To be clear, then: Project Scorpio doesn't feature Ryzen cores, but the Xbox team are not so concerned about this. "On the CPU side of things, we could still meet our design goals with the custom changes we made," Kevin Gammill points out. "At the end of the day we are still a consumer product. We want to hit the price-points where consumers want to purchase this. It's about balancing the two."

really impressed

How do you calculate 50%?

If the PS4 Pro has 8 GB RAM and Scorpio has 12 GB RAM, isn't it more like 33% more RAM?

You're calculating the ram increase from the 12gb as the base rather than the 8gb as the base.

8gb + 50% = 12gb

It's a 50% increase in ram from the PS4

Doubtful. At best we get a tease next year.

Mid Cycle refresh is pretty much a straight role reversal. Xbox One had 900P vs native 1080p for Sony.

Scorpio has native 4K vs checkboard for PS4 Pro.

Has to be proven as a constant. Technically speaking, PS4 has some (very few) titles at native 4K. If sony wanted to say they play games at 4K as a marketing Ploy, they could play the same game. To think that all titles on the system play at 4K native might be true if you are talking all currently existing titles NOW that play on Xbox One will play native 4K, then you are likely accurate. To think all future titles playing on Scorpio will be native 4K.. well .. remains to be proven.

yeah, but with Scorpio being more expensive as well. I can see Sony slashing the price a bit for the Pro when the time comes.

So if the PS4 is more poweful than the XBONE, with multiplatform titles looking and performing better on the base PS4 - how will the Scorpio outdo PS4 Pro games based on the base code and moderate CPU differential?

How will developers enhance Scorpio compatible games to look "leaps-and-bounds" ahead of the PS4 Pro versions?

Other than framerate, I don't think we will see a graphical parity between the 2 consoles, tbh.

Seems like he's clutching at straws then. Arguing about difference of a component then using that to make a claim about overall power difference is an impressive error in logic, almost embarrassing seeing how desperately hes trying to avoid meaningful facts for his argument.

Umm ok...

Anyway, I find Microsoft's whole approach to the Scorpio's hardware very interesting. I love that they're trying to remove the exact hardware limitations that bottleneck current games instead of just throwing more power at it, although the main question still remains and that is: price.

I really hope they drop a bomb at E3 and stick a $399 price tag on the Scorpio but unfortunately I feel like it may be $499.

The real question is.. How is the PS4 Pro selling? To me Sony was reaching a point with the PS4 where the sales were still good but decelerating at a quicker rate than previous years.

I would imagine the Scorpio selling in the same ballpark as PS4 Pro since it is essentially the same ask for their potential buyers.. If the x1 sales werent that impressive anyways I would guess they have gotten worse since the Scorpio announcement because people were waiting up to purchase. Could be good news since people will shift up to the new platform.. but bad because the x1s wont have legs much longer.

Nah, not this year. But next year with a 2019 release? Absolutely.

Wouldn't be surprised by this honestly. Given the sheer wait from Nintendo announcing the NX to revealing and then releasing the Nintendo Switch, it's now not at all unprecedented.

Xbox One - a good console, but pretty useless for someone who already owns a PS4 and a gaming PC.

Xbox One S - same as above but plays 4K movies and has HDR.

Project Scorpio - the best one yet, surely, but ultimately still won't get me buying one unless the game library improves a lot.

Let's see if this prompts another PS4 upgrade in future.

The best thing Sony could possibly do is release a further upgraded PS4 with backwards compatibility and 4K Blu-Ray support.

God no. I can't do this every year
