Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

Some people are really having a hard time dealing with these Scorpio specs. This thread has turned sour and sad. A shame really.

lol exactly max load with ultra settings was at 88%. The test with 4k assets and Dynamic weather was 40%-60%

I didnt say the pic was the ultra settings one go back and reread

Sorry, I'm confused. Can you link or show me where MS did a test with 4k assets and dynamic weather that used only 40%-60% of the GPU?

So I don't have an xb1 but I've been picking up games here and there in case I ever did. So far I have Sunset Overdrive, Halo MCC, Halo 5, Forza Horizon 3, Gears remake, Gears 4. What else should I pick up?

That's already a pretty good list. If you throw in Forza 6 and Rare Replay then you should be good.

Jeez man. Id just buy a cheap used XB1 at that rate.

But maybe get a XBL Gold membership and collect a library of the monthly games? You'll more then likely end up with a decent back catalog of 360 games, indie games and the odd old AAA XB1 game.

No, that's not what happened. The version of Forza Digital Foundry actually saw running was the "Xbox One assets" version, which was solid 60fps at 55-70% GPU utilization. They were told by Microsoft that when turned up to all ultra settings, Forza hit 88% utilization (and presumably the same performance). When DF tried to run the PC version at 4K with ultra settings, a 1070 wouldn't quite stay locked.

But despite both being versions of Forza, the two games compared were not the same. It's unclear how much optimization for Scorpio the "ultra assets" version had, if any (or what improvements Turn10 have just naturally made to their engine since the retail release). And furthermore, at best Digital Foundry only had Microsoft's word that it ran totally locked. This is why they specifically say to be cautious about drawing any conclusions from their "test".

Did you not have a PS2 or PS3? Because both were completely backwards compatible, while still also running games that were a leap forward.

Richard from DF said he saw the game running @ ultra 4k 60fps not that he was told..

Never understand why people go so crazy over this stuff. Its certainly interesting but wow lol.

Its their version on the pro. You want a 4k console get the one for your preferred system. The numbers will make relatively little difference at the end if the day to most people.

It's easy to spot them, jelly donuts all ova they're face.

How is this anything but console warrior nonsense? There are plenty of reasons for gaming enthusiasts to have an opinion and feel like discussing it that are neither rooted in being jealous or having unbounded enthusiasm.

The only thing that makes any sense at this point is healthy skepticism. The raw specs are extremely promising, but are exactly what could be inferred from information presented at E3 2016. Nothing has changed. Without pricing, performance in practice, industrial design including how effective and quiet the cooling solution is, plus some insight into software support it's just a promising piece of hardware lacking a lot of important details.

If it's compelling at launch I'll own one. I'll almost certainly pre-order the moment I can to lock in that option.

I was about to get an xbox s when scorpio was announced! That gold membership suggestion is a great idea. Think I'll do that.

I have on Ori on steam and rare replay is something i'm interested in so I'll pick that up asap.

I'll second the Gold sub suggestion. That's what I've been doing for the last six months. By the time I get a Scorpio my library will be more stacked than my PS4 library.

It's near the bottom of the article where DF talks about the Forza demo.

Here's where he said dynamic weather is in

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-04-06-project-scorpio-explained

Did you see it running a game?

Yes. Well, a ForzaTech demo, which is a stress test based on the Forza Motorsport 6 engine, running the maximum number of cars around a track with dynamic weather and all the bells and whistles turned on.

That's not what I'm asking for. You said "4k assets and Dynamic weather was 40%-60%" of the GPU resources. Where's the proof.

Can you read? I seriously linked you to the article. If you can't read then get someone to read it. I'm not going to go through the article for you. Good day

Seen as the iPad model is similar to PCs development where you have normal/advanced/ultra settings that has to be more advantages for devs.

I think you missing the point the Scorpio is the next specs that MS will allow devs to hit after a few years of it being on the market so that will be the start of higher specs which is far more consumer orientated than a traditional generation where a PS5 or Xbox 2 May ditch backward compatibility.

But this isn't about backward compatibility, MS new generationless approach is about forward compatibility. In iPad/PC model you can do whatever you like: Target most hardware settings to reach max audience, or target the high end hardware because your ideas depends on best hardware. However in MS's approach, you have to design your ideas around the previous iteration of Xbox hardware whether you like it or not.

Now of course most devs will try to target most platforms out there, but for some games this isn't practical (or even possible in some cases). Scorpio being the new base for development, will hinder some game designs which are CPU dependent such as Interactive AI, advanced physics... So I'm not sure some 3rd party devs will be happy about being forced to support Scorpio.

The thing that bugs me about that stationary photo they keep referring to: the cars are all in starting formation, right? As in, stationary. It should be relative easy to render that shot given there is no motion, or even player input considered, at that point. So of course utilization will be low.

It reminds me of the excellent screenshots that are taken in a photo mode, once the action is paused, and all spare compute cycles can be used for better anti-aliasing and other lighting effects.

This is getting really dumb. Just show me where 40% is even a factor. That was his claim, so back it up.

People on the last page pointed out that the 66% figure was with the X1 versions quality settings running on Scorpio with dynamic weather, max AI cars and at 4k/60fps, which is in the caption for the photo in the article and posted on the previous page. The article specifies that it ranged from 60-70% at these settings. In the acrticle, right below that picture is this nugget of info:

"In fact, the team can push ForzaTech to the equivalent of PC's ultra-level settings and we're still sitting at 88 per cent GPU utilisation; in terms of system utilisation, this is ballpark with Xbox One at 1080p on its default settings."

Don't be deliberately dense, use the tools provided to you and find the answer yourself. Now, to continue viewing this amusement park ride continue playing out :)

The shot is stationary, but they tested the game at the start of a race. This scenario is actually he most taxing for racing games. Start of a race in weather conditions with all cars being rendered at once due to the fact they are all lined up. This is the scenario you run to stress test a racing game.

Thanks Jaguar Victory, I wasn't going to respond to Space_nut suggesting I can't read. Let's be civil.

No problem man.

He did say they tested a couple of laps worth of action and generally this was the most intense because during a race you don't normally get as many cars on the screen at once. Sounds promising.

First I corrected him and second this was is the post you responded to

DF

"The ForzaTech port to Scorpio took two days to complete and was fully performant from day one."

The screenshot below is the Forza demo running in 4K 60FPS and 4k assets with only about 66% gpu usage. Maybe we'll get more videos and pics from DF but i doubt it. I'm sure Turn 10 wants Forza 7 to be the showcase

.

Only it's not. MS said the developers can do what they like.

Like did you watch the video where he says it fluctuated between 66 and 75 while in gameplay?

If were going to have a discussion you need to atleast go through the material in the OP beforw delivering a hot take.

I doubt that they added a dynamic weather cycle to a game that previously had none.
Unless that feature already existed and was just deactivated on XB1. Its pretty much impossible to build it from scratch in two days.

It was. DF seen it running in front of him. Actually we are getting a video soon about the Forza demo itself soon :)

Also the weather tech is a hint to guess what.....Forza 7

I've seen the picture. Space_nut said 40%-60% and I guess you don't agree, and you have your own percentages. Just trying to get to where his numbers are coming from.

Not at first. You responded to that post calling it out, and I then responded to your post. He said the incorrect number later. Its on the last page go through your own post in chronological order.
