KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

The subject of smudges on the screen has come up on this thread occasionally, so I wanted to share what worked for me. I had these two really persistent smudges on the bottom of the screen that were driving me crazy. I couldn't get rid of them using the microfiber cloth that came with the set, no matter how much I tried. I was worried that something had screwed up the coating on the screen and I was just stuck with these eyesores permanently.

On a reddit forum, someone recommended Monster ScreenClean 2.0. I'm normally turned off by the brand Monster because of their ridiculously overpriced HDMI cables, but this cleaning fluid worked instantly. It was such a relief after paying a lot of money for a nice TV to finally get a clear image again. Thought I'd recommend it, in case anyone else had the same problem.

Forcing to YUV420 is useful for those who have the flickering black screen issue with certain HDMI cables (yes, even certified cables) or displays since it requires less bandwidth. I have had some of that unfortunately for a few days, but I personally haven't noticed a difference vs RGB (for SDR content).

Since I added a new Yamaha RX v581 into the chain, that issue seems to have cleared up... oddly enough.

i might try this. thanks.
Do you guys actually see an option for YUV422 under Video Output Settings->Resolution?

For me I have YUV420 and RGB - but if I set it to Auto and start an HDR game and look under Video Output Information it says YUV422(HDR). Like you said above, meltingparappa, it should be good.

But the screen looks "bleak" playing with Auto (422) in comparison to what I see if I manually set it to YUV420. Maybe it's the "TV in a store" effect, it looks super impactful but it's not correct.

I'm so confused.

I am not 100% on this, but if everything is set to auto, and you get RGB when playing SDR video, then YUV422 during HDR content, then everything is kosher.

The difference for me at least is pretty subtle. I noticed it in FFVX at most during a sunrise or sunset looking into what was normally a dark horizon, and noticing new details.

Watching Grand Tour on amazon prime gives me a pretty dramatic color difference, but the effect so far has been extremely subtle in the games I've played. I'm waiting a really gaudy game to go overboard on the effect to put my doubt at ease.

YUV422 is 10 bit colour, YUV420 is 8 bit colour. Massive difference in the colour range that can be transmitted.

I screwed up when I bought my HDR tv and mixed up the HDMI cable that came with the pro with the one from the OG X1. Oddly enough, both HDMI cables 'worked'. i get the HDR video playing message for both cables, but i cant help but feel i am missing out. I am going to go home and check the YUV settings regardless.

Just got my TV a week ago and have been running it in 2160p RGB.

I had to do updates to my Receiver and enable UHD Color on the HDMI on KS8000 as others have said.

From there its just worked. I guess it is doing 4:2:2 when it goes into HDR but it is definitely getting HDR as I can visibly see the difference and the TV informs me when the HDR signal is there.

No issues with color phasing or banding but apparently Samsung is aware that there are odd issues with new firmwares.

Contact lens solution is what I've always used on my TVs including this one.

I'm reticent to reply and give a completely incorrect response, but I find that that is... sort of my experience as well.

Last time I tested, it seemed like YUV420 made colors pop and thus made it seem like it was 'correct' to what my preconceptions of what HDR content would look like, but I think it's just displaying an oversaturated version of the color spectrum.

I THINK the idea is that proper RGB/YUV422 will look a little duller, but have a greater range. You can compensate for this by setting dynamic contrast to 'low' or 'medium' (a highly controversial option).

Mostly I've been terrified to get into the rabbit hole of no longer trusting my eyes, as theoretically everything should work out, so I'll just believe what I'm seeing is the way it's meant to be.

Thank you two. Guess I have to give up with HDR for now. I can't possibly see it. I should probably get Horizon.

Your television should tell you that HDR content is playing. Is it that it's not notifying your or can you simply not tell a difference? It was very noticeable for me playing ME:A and RE7 on PC and FFXV on PS4 pro.

I get the notification. I have set it up 100% correctly and it's running. I just can't see the difference or at least I can't remember how it looked without.

Wait a minute. I was told when I bought my TV (many pages back) to set the PS4 Pro to auto and forget about it, and it defaults to RGB. Now people are saying YUV 420. These options I have never fiddled with but I see a clear difference between them when changing. Any "correct"/"easy" answer? It looks to heighten the contrast to hell when I switch to YUV420 and play Horizon.

Always RGB, always YUV420 or change depending on if I'm gonna play something with HDR?

I have mine in auto and it switches depending on if I'm playing HDR or not.

Ahhhh I see. Thanks :)

Is there a consensus on Smart LED being Low or High? I've read that it definitely needs to be turned on for HDR but I'm seeing conflicted responses and some being very adamant against setting it on High.. due to something about white spots on the TV?

I've had it on high since that's what Rtings recommends..

Then again they also recommended color space to be Native but apparently that has since been patched and auto is the way to go now?

Right now for the HDR related options I have Backlight at 20, Contrast at 100, Smart LED High, Color Space Auto. Anything else I'm missing?

Yeah those settings are good. I'd turn dynamic contrast off personally, and if the picture is too dull turn gamma up to 2 or 3. Dynamic contrast on low or medium will brighten the picture up however, but lose some of the hdr benefits. Some people complain about blooming with smart LED on high, which is a glowing effect around bright areas, but I've not had an issue with this. Smart LED high means the TV can reach it's peak brightness on light areas.

Auto colour space is best, it displays what is coming from the source. Native tries to enhance the colour, but often oversaturates and makes them look garish/unrealistic.

Only other things i can think of is to make sure you have UHD colour turned on for your HDMI ports, and I'd also recommend tv brightness at 45.

8 bit colour can display a range of 256 colours per channel (RGB), per pixel, whilst 10 bit can do 1024.

Welp I've just learned more in one post than trying to google around the past few days since I've gotten this TV.. thank you sir!

I have brightness at 45, contrast at 100, backlight 20, sharpness 10 (have heard 0 or 10-20 is good.. no idea how much of a difference it really makes), color/tone at 50, smart led high, dynamic contrast off, color space auto, gamma 0, white balance at default (2 point is all 0s), and UHD on for my Pro.

I can tell the settings are working because when I'm playing Horizon it displays UHD/HDR tags (and 3840 x 2160 / 60p for resolution) under source on the TV. Under my PS4 display settings it shows that same resolution and YUV422 for HDR (and says 2k/4k HDR supported).

Do you manually turn down the backlight/contrast and turn off smart led when not playing HDR games/content?

No problem.

When in game mode (or any other 'special viewing mode') you have to change it manually. Personally I put backlight down to 10, but it depends how bright your room is. If not in game mode it should change automatically, basically keeping it's own set of settings as if it was another source.

Color I have at 55, but that can vary panel to panel and is whatever looks right to you. Sharpness I personally prefer at 0, particularly for 4k content, but it can help the picture 'pop' it more. It basically creates an artificial border around things to try to make them appear sharper.

I keep hearing conflicting reports about HDR and what level 'Backlight' and 'Smart LED' should be set to. I was playing Ratchet & Clank yesterday with 'Backlight' on 20, and 'Smart LED' set to low, and the colours looked really desaturated. But I read somewhere that when using HDR, it's recommended to have 'Smart LED' set to low or even have it off altogether.

If your settings are based on movie mode try something different. I find that some games show up incredibly dim specifically when set up with movie mode, like the backlight isnt being fully engaged or something.

Think you are confusing smart led and dynamic contrast. Always have smart led high for hdr content. It's suggested to turn off dynamic contrast. Some like its effect, but it causes loss of detail in bright areas.

Try just upping the colour setting. Definitely want smart LED on high, this only affects the backlight though, not colours.

I think I might have them mixed up, actually. Smart LED is set to high, but DC is always set to off when playing in Game Mode.

Jim my set did that for 2 days (the flicker) and then it croaked. Hope yours doesn't do that!! Day 3 it just wouldn't power on. Getting a new one delivered today. (I had bought the Amazon cables too)

I bought a new surge protector, and was about to buy the cable gutterboy suggested.... ugh

Anyone have a problem with a line of stuck pixels? I get 5-7 stuck pixels only when I use my PS4 and it goes away if change the input to something else and then back. It occurs quite a lot though and I'm wondering if I can fix it - or should I just call Samsung?

That is odd. Try a new HDMI cable and see if that fixes it.

Yikes, good luck.

By "flickering" I mean losing signal and showing a black screen only when using RGB/Auto PS4 Pro setting. Apparently not that uncommon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6ny04oFQSg). Not sure it's the same thing, but there's one type of mission in PS4 Watch Dogs 2 that always left a row of pixels on the left-hand side of my screen - but only for a moment.

The mission ended with a few lines of warning text. The top was red and the bottom was white.

The pixels on the left were red and white. Right on the edge of the screen and in an inconsistent pattern, but always red and white. They ran for about 1/4 of the 55" screen.

When the warning screen went away, so did the pixels.

Unfortunately, it happens during different games and it doesn't go away until I switch the input.

So I recently found out that nearly all 4K blurays are in HDR. BvS, Harry Potter, nearly all the recent 4k releases are in HDR. For someone starving for HDR content, that was surprising since very few digital vendors actually offer HDR movies which led me to think that HDR was a rare thing, and those that do offer HDR streaming charge $30 and offer no rental options.

I dont have a 4k player but i might pick up a used X1 Slim if i can get it for around $200 which i can subsidize by trading in my OG X1. has anyone found some good deals on any X1s. I dont want to wait until Scorpio comes out.

I might have found a couple of places that do 4k rentals.

https://www.store-3d-blurayrental.com/ - These guys offer a rental for $8 which is kinda expensive but still better than paying $30 for a shitty collection on TV apps. Their subscription plans are pretty decent though. Reviews weren't that good though.

Looks like Amazon might be offering some 4k HDR rentals for $8 but i cant find anything.

There is also a video chain called Family Video in my city that might be renting out 4k blurays.

Where does everyone get their 4k HDR fix? You cant all be buying $30 discs right?

Is there a specific wall mount that's well suited for this TV (65")? I've never mounted a TV before so I don't know if there are brands to stay away from things like that. Will be in an average bedroom (no bed), with a couch about 6' away. Mainly gonna be used for gaming/movies/Netflix, etc.

Cool, i've set sharpness down to 0 to test it out.

Personal question (since this seems to be more of a preference), but what do you have set for the color tone? I had my TV on warm1 and PS4 Pro on standard. I'm trying PS4 at warm1 as well for the moment to see how it compares.

I've settled on Warm 1 for everything. I think you just get used to whatever you have it on anyway.

Reporting back in. Thanks Jim.

Mine flickered almost as if it was resetting the input, going black and quickly back to whatever was on screen with the input #.

After one afternoon, the new set has shown no signs of the first one's issues. The picture is gorgeous. I used rtings' picture settings and the ps4 video settings are on auto.

I still think this could be cable issues more than anything. If setting YUV420 which uses less bandwidth fixes it then that again points to a cable issue.

If switching to YUV420 fixes it it's probably low quality cable responsible for that.

What picture settings do you guys use for Cable/Satellite viewing?

I am using settings pretty close to Rtings.com. Xbox One and PS4 look great when playing games or streaming video. I have FiOS and it just doesn't look to great with the settings I am using. Any tips?

I used to have Directv and the picture quality itself was better than FiOS. So I am aware the quality from FiOS isn't to great. But I feel like it looks a bit washed out when I watch.
