I don't really think Sony needs to counteract Scorpio or Switch with anything beyond what they have honstly...
More software maybe? They already have contracts in place for every major game through this year for marketing rights, the momentum and the software sales driving them as well.
Your on the money.
Let's face it, when it comes to the holidays, it's Sony that's in the position to lose it with some huge fuck up.They already tied in the biggest games in the industry with their platform thanks to exclusive marketing deals and dlc. Most of not (hopefully) all of them are slated to come this year.
I disagree with the analysis sales have passed their peak simply due to the fact some of their biggest ips have not yet been released on the PS4. GT, GoW and TLOU are system sellers.
Cod has finally returned to its WW2 roots after more then half a decade, which will drive up consumer interest in a big way.
Destiny 1 shifted units and is one of the biggest, if not biggest, franchises this gen. Desiny 2 will move a ton of units for ps just as D1 did, this time around however the anticipation I dare say will be much higher and the thirst that much more real, from all segments from the market.
Battlefront 2 is tied to the biggest fucking sci-fi ip ever, an ip that has made well over a bil, or two, at the B.O within a few years and is coming out with an incredibly anticipated film. It'll basically print money for Sony whilst shifting a shitton of units.
Let's also not factor out the spectre that is RDR2. It's the game coming out of the team that has made one of the best selling games of all time and already has been proven to shift copies and consoles years after it has been released. The first one sold over 10 million copies without the breath and focus of the new deal Sony struck with R*. If it hits this year, Sony has holiday sales win in the bag. Only thing that can countertact this is a switch Pokemon release.
I haven't mentioned Spider-Man, simply because there is no confirmation or rumour it'll be out this year. But yeah, it's spidey, it's the one marvel super hero that's more popular, still even after all those huge films, then iron man and cap, sells the most mercy too. Or is considered to be one of the top. Marvel is red hot in popularity and profit and will be for some time. having an exclusive game will make consoles fly of the shelves.
Some of said that the games I mentioned above are multi platform, that's true but that won't matter much, consumers will virtually see the PS logo front, left and centre on tons of marketing material across all types of media for the biggest games this holiday. Average Joe will just think de facto platform to play it on. It worked for D1 and Battlefront, and to a decent extent cod too.
One important thing posters are missing in this thread is some has something to other 2 consoles makers don't have, price flexibility. They can price the PS4 slim, and even the PS4 pro, at must have, not to be missed prices. Like they did this year with horizon PS4 slim bundle in the uk. Ice white PS4 slim, 2 controllers and a copy of horizon was just £200. Insanity. Sony will do even better deals this holiday thanks to the ever cheaper costs to manufacture the cost of the slim and pro, and vr headset. They can price the pro this year to mainstream price and get that mass casual 200$ price point with the slim. All this with very attractive games bundled in. Yes yes ms can do the same, but they did this last year with absolutely fantastic deals and still lost.
Only 2 things can stand in the way of Sony netting holiday 2017, switch getting Pokemon out this year and/or ms spending more then we have ever seen a company do getting both home grown exclusives and 3rd party exclusives ot dlc out this holiday. We have had no reports ms is doing what I mentioned.
I simply don't see how anyone else but Sony, with the games and hw they have, can win this holiday. They have out ninja'ed the other two for the prime position. The peak will, I reckon, be reached this year.
