Jefferies Equity Analyst: Mario Kart 8D a "mega-hit on a different scale altogether"

Drive by post?

Of course it's about meaningful release are platform exclusive/Nintendo games not meaningful? Is Mario Kart not a meaningful release? If you took Zelda out of the Switch's launch without another major Nintendo series in its place would the Switch had sold nearly as well as it did in its first month? If your answer is "no" then people bought it for one game instead of waiting for the library of Nintendo games to get bigger. Buying a new platform on the *promise* of what's to come is incredibly foolish, I've learned that from past experience. Why would anyone in 2017 buy the dead system that is the WiiU or hell the last two or three years buy a WiiU for Zelda when the writing was already on the wall for the console and that Nintendo was probably going to pull a Twilight Princess with it? How am I trivializing game sales by calling Mario Kart a meaningful release? I'm calling this guy's hyperbole dumb and it is. It's fucking Mario Kart and they always sell really well.

You seem emotionally invested in this.

Yes, people buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games, this is well established.

Except for the WiiU it seems, how many of those 8.3 million people who bought a WiiU after MK8 and bought the game at the same time? It looks more like most buy the platform for other things and then get Mario Kart because they're typically really good while for some it may be a tipping point to buying a Nintendo platform. I know I bought Mario Kart with the last Nintendo platform I bought but I didn't buy it specifically FOR Mario Kart.
This is Nintendo handheld all of which that have sold 70+ million. That's the long and short of it. Unlike consoles Nintendo handhelds have always been popular which why people are buying these games to play on this system rather than that of the wii u. if this was released on the wii u 2 we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I love it. I wish they port more Wii U games to the Switch to fill in the holes between new software releases. A lot of the people I know who picked up a Switch skipped the Wii U.

I want a Dragon Age trilogy port, I want a Mass Effect Trilogy port. I'd buy Dragon's Dogma for it, I'd buy the Batman series on it. I'd buy GTAIV and V. I'd buy RE4,5,6,7 for the thing, and the remakes.

A handheld console with that kind of lineup would be my favorite system.

More ports please.

This is why I think anybody who says the outcome of MK8D is "obvious" or "of course it's selling this well because..." is straight up lying. It's outpacing MKW while Wii was in its prime and had an install base an order of magnitude higher than Switch. Nobody predicted that. If fact in that thread I linked up the page (dated April 28, launch day), there were people suggesting that MK8D's sales would be negatively affected by Switch stock shortages.

MK8D is great - I have it - I also owned 8, 7, Wii ect. I'm a pretty reliable Nintendo consumer.

But even I know 1 week does not equal a trend or "outpacing."

MKWii sold something like 35 million copies including bundles. The Wii moved about 100m units. About a 35% attach rate. Everything will depend on the Switchs install base for MK8D - I expect it to be around the same attach rate if the Switch sells well (with lots of casuals), and a higher attach rate, albeit with less overall copies, if the Switch sells less, just like MK8 sold 8m copies on the WiiU's 14m userbase.

I mean this thread is literally about MK8D outpacing it, it may no longer do so in the future, but right now it is, thats fact

I'm gonna go ahead and make a bold prediction- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will outsell Mario Kart Wii, which as of now has reached close to 37 million units sold.

Three reasons:

1) I believe MK8D will be both bundled with the Switch and supported with DLC fairly soon, as in maybe even as soon as holiday 2017. 2018 for sure. The Wii sold the majority of its hardware in years 2-4 so if the "standard" bundle of the Switch comes with MK8D that will greatly inflate its numbers.

2) I believe there will be no MK9 on the Switch, at least this iteration of the Switch. Which means at least for another 5-6 years there won't be a MK9.

3) I believe the Switch can sell as much as the Wii, though likely in a larger amount of time (i.e. not in 5-6 years, more like 7-8). That will also include revisions where someone will likely already own MK8D so they won't need to rebuy it.

I think if the Switch does sell like the Wii MK8D might wind up doing around 40 million in 10 years time, again largely due to being bundled.

One things for sure if it does happen I'm sure you'll be about the only person who called it. That's a crazy optimistic prediction. I don't want to say it's impossible because that's a quick way to end up looking stupid but it's incredibly unlikely.

I like how you think. God speed.

Literally no-one I've talked to considers the switch the next handheld release from Nintendo. This is a hybrid console that does either tv or handheld really well. In fact, I'd say it does home console better due to the battery life and size of it.

I'm actually quite surprised at how small the Switch is, considering what it can do.

I just wish I could afford one. I fucking hate being poor.

Literally everyone I've talked to considers it a handheld with an elegant TV out capability.

It has comparable battery life to the 3DS and is the biggest jump in graphical prowess traditional handheld gaming has even seen. If it's going to get Pokemon it's Nintendo's main handheld and consumers will treat it as such.

Every console sells well at launch and Nintendo hardware has some hype/resell value currently thanks to NES Classic and launch shortages.

Not to say that the Switch won't be successful, but it's a bit premature.

Even Nintendo enthusiasts have to admit the software line up is lacking at this point so major titles like MK8 should be selling well when there is not a lot of options.

I'd trade a 20-game launch window for the the quality of the "two" game launch of the Switch every day of the week.

Both games made for the previous console. They don't deserve success, they deserve to to fail for the lack of SW and charging for the same games over and over.
Never I hope.

There are plenty of port houses that can use the money and experience and I can always use more games.

Bring on the Uncharted trilogy @ 1080/60.

I can also use a few XB1 "exclusives" remastered to 1080P like they did with Plants vs Zombies.
I said "wow".

Yeah. Not every console launches with the best Zelda and best Mario Kart ever.

This thread shouldn't be going this way but considering both games are on the WiiU this is slightly disingenuous.

On the topic at hand, very good to see the success and hopefully this means good things for the Switch.

Not really, there are just no games to buy for it. Kind of surprising however as these games are also available on the WII U.
Most PS4 and XB1 games were available on last gen consoles outside of games like knack of course. A tiny percentage of people actually care.

This is in general and will happen time and time again.
