ARMS U.S. commercial: We've downgraded from rooftop parties to garage parties

Price drop on 1st party Nintendo software? Where have you been, breh lol.

Amazon PRIME pre-order or BBGCU are your best medium range bets.

Mario Kart and Zelda dropped over here at amazon.de to 50 and 55 Euro respectively. You can also get ARMS and Splatoon for about 51 Euro incl. shipping from 365games.co.uk too.

Nintendo Games aren't that expensive, at least not the Switch ones, I have yet to experience a higher price than what we've seen with the WiiU(or Xbox One/PS4 for that matter, heck, even Steam, Nier Automata cost me 50 Bucks too for PC and I didn't even get a disc), even though the Switch uses superior cartridge tech over stupid optical media that is prone to scratches and fungi ^^

Why exactly do you feel that way?

Should I start working on the Wall of Shame?
Please don't do a wall of shame. I don't think Arms is going to bomb but I also hate the idea that people should be "shamed" for having a wrong prediction. The Horizon one in particular was basically just Sony fan gloating and I found it super gross.

I didn't know what ARMS was until this thread. It's ... Wii boxing?

I'm not a fan of waggle-based gaming. I am not the target market for this game.

I guess you also aren't a fan of the Switch or Nintendo if you had no clue about this game.

It would kinda help somewhat if people would actually give some reasoning behind their opinion instead of just "this game will flop."

I own a Switch, and so far, it's great. The only Nintendo console I haven't owned, going back to the NES, is the Wii U.

I don't watch OTA TV, so maybe I missed the commercials.

I've seen the threads go by, but I literally had no clue what this game was about.

you can play it without motion control, and it plays very well with it

Ok! That was not obvious. I played Wii boxing and really, that's what this commercial makes ARMS look like.

Game is so good it should sell millions, however in this shitty world it will probably just do "ok"

You could litterally try it for free this week end and next week end as well.

The eyeroll comes from how some people insist that motion control = waggle (which sounds rudely reductive).

There's literally no waggle in that commercial. But hey, if it's not for you, it's not for you.

You can try it for free the next weekend during the second weekend of network stress tests. Check out the OT for it for when you can play: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1380408

Additional, Nintendo's youtube offers a direct dedicated to it, so you can watch it to see if it appeals to you.

I would have thought if you were interested in the Switch, you would have at least seen it in the January presentation.

There is the ARMS Global Testpunch again next weekend where you can download a demo of the game and try it out playing people online.

It may look like Wii boxing on the surface but it's more like an arena fighting game. Try it out and judge for yourself. It even is playable with traditional controls if you prefer, but given the control you have over your punches with motion controls, you should at least give motion a shot.

Wish they would just do commercials from the gamecube or DS days that were super weird but got you interested cause of how ridiculous it was.

I get that the Switch has a marketing focus on groups of friends to show off being a hybrid system but it doesnt do the games justice. I wouldnt wanna try the game from this commercial.

Ok, thanks. That thread is way more compelling that the commercial, btw.

not to imply that motion controls are not good especially in this games, but what is with Nintendo pretending that motion controls are the only method of control on essential all pieces of PR of this game, or rather pushing the use motion controls in this game so hard? b4 the testpunch we had no idea how the different methods of inout would work! could it be possible that Nintendo has some sort of internal data that proves people are still heavily interested in motion controls? or is it simply their way of showcasing the switches many different technologies? personally I get the sense that as beneficial as motion controls can be in certain games (splatoon) there is still a deep seethed bias particularly in the gaming community that it is an overall inferior method of input on most front. in fact, i got the sense that Nintendo was less interested in motions controls than ever prior to the arms announcement. but even if i'm complelty wrong i still think its shocking that Nintendo would shun essentially all mention of traditional controls from 99% of PR.

what say you neogaf? are they turning off many low information customers? or am i overthinking things?

I agree, and it's especially frustrating when these posts are usually drive-bys where the poster never comes back to explain their point.

Having said that, I don't think walls of shame are much better because it basically equates to "haha I was right and you were wrong, suck it nerd"

First tragedy, then farce.
I personally think it would've been better served by more clearly showing the way you can curve a punch before and after it's been thrown. More emphasis on the dashing, jumping, and air-dashing would've been great to differentiate this, as well.

I think this is Nintendo trying to move the Switch into the old Wii casual appeal. I think the portable nature of the system may be ripe for that sort of thing too.

Not really needed since children look up to young adults/teenagers anyway.

Yeah but if Nintendo had made a game like ARMS 5 years ago, this commercial would have been all children playing and like maybe one scene with a father playing with his son. It just further shows how they've changed their marketing.

This looks like a clear demographic shift - these young, attractive people seem more hip and athletic than Karen's group. Maybe both groups will clash for dominance over the watering hole in a future commercial.

Edit: Also, GET THAT OPEN CUP AWAY FROM MY SWITCH

I don't think ARMS will flop. It's only the third high profile release for a massively successful console. If it had launched late in the consoles life when there are lots of other releases to choose from I'd be concerned but I think it'll get plenty of attention

True i'm super glad it's changed honestly the Wii U and some of the Wii commercials were really bad. Sure you can have kids in ads but it should not get too cringy imo because they are targetting more audiences than just kids.

That's why i think the change in marketing is a good one for Ninty it's on par with xbox and ps now imo.

Nintendo finally learned that you can advertise to children without actually having children in your ads. As you said, children tend to go off of what teens and young adults are doing anyway, so you need to appeal to those groups, and the children will follow suit.

They're targeting the CW cast demographic

Good analysis. But what if the ballers show up (fresh off some NBA2K) and dunk on all of them?

Boring.

Slow music didn't work. Game soundtrack is much more hype. The ending of the direct video achieved that. This commercial was totally meh.

They also didn't show handheld mode or pro controller, which is a mistake imo.

Waggle is not the way to market the game.

Plenty of games in the Wii era didn't show waggle in commercials, but would have still been classified as imrpecise waggling when played. It's not this guys fault that motion controls now have this stigma around them.

It's going to be an uphill battle for Nintendo to prove that these controls work. In the mean time they really need to indicate in some way that standard controllers work as well.

I know that technically "motion controls" are not strictly just Waggle, but the commercial didnt show at all how this wasn't just wii sports boxing 2.

Look at the last 20 seconds of direct trailer to see how to hype up the game.

Good music, cool stages, different modes, etc.

This commercial sucked. And somewhat got paid a shitton for such generic garbage.

I mean, didn't a shitload of people love Wii boxing? I can totally see why they'd go for the motion controls party angle.

I'm guessing it's to appeal to the mainstream/casual audience. Comparisons to Wii Sports is a good thing as far as they are concerned.

The core audience likely knows more about the game already.
