Pokemon Ultra Moon and Ultra Sun for Nintendo 3DS

So will Pokemon be following us in this version? If not, I wonder why they bothered to make the walking animations for every single Pokemon for Sun/Moon and then never implement them for use.

Lots of things in games are done and not used, but left in the code. It's pretty standard to happen.

Just seems like it would have been a lot of effort to create walking animations for every single Pokemon only to end up never using them, is all.

These things happen unfortunately. 3DS isn't powerful so probably couldn't handle it and that hasn't changed.

If it's not happening woth these games it'll most likely happen on gen 8 at least. And think how cool it will look on Switch then. Also, since now the Pokémon are 3D there won't be any reason for them to drop the feature in following games. It kind of was justified in BW because the proportions of the overworld sprites were different than HGSS and they knew they would be dropping sprites very soon anyways so it made no sense to remake them

Figured that if I do have to play another 3ds pokemon game then I might as well do it the best way possible. So I just preordered a new 2DS XL. Nintendo you clever bastards.

Also just booted up my new 3DS for the first time in months. Bloody hell I'd forgotten how small those screens were. The switch has spoiled me. :p

It is a LOT of unusued content though. Also, the overworld seemed to run without any hitches no? Doesn't seem unfeasible for them to add it. I'm not sure it's about that it was too draining on the 3DS hardware. Rather then it caused too many glitches they couldn't resolve in time.

Sun and Moon were bad enough the first time. No buy.

After sleeping on it here are my thoughts.
I really hope this game has a significant amount of new content, Sun and Moon were the first main series games that I have had to drive to replay.
I hope we get new alolan forms and megas that are well designed to make up for those tragedies that are going to be on the boxes.
I really hope Necrozma gets something for itself and isn't just shafted by being nothing but armor to power up two Pokemon that were already more powerful than it.

It would sell but it would very much look like an upscaled 3DS game and that could give the wrong impression of the Switch power-wise. You don't want your flagship, best-selling title making your platform look bad.
That is so surely not the reason and you know it.

If anything you make your platform look bad by not putting a much desired instalment of one of your key franchises on the platform when you bloody know it would play just as well on the system.
Especially when the system isn't exactly drowning in games.

Damn Shofu, perhaps a Switch verision incoming :D

Then why wait to announce it?

Best case scenario we get some Pokedex Switch App that teases possibilities like Pokedex 3D, or has limited integration to your 3DS game in the vein of that Animal Crossing Plaza on Wii U.

Pokémon is not a Nintendo franchise, for fucks sake.

It absolutely is. That's like saying a child is not your son or daughter because you only have joint custody over them.

If you're putting stock into that 4chan thing you're fooling yourself. If there was a switch version they would have announced it already.

So I noticed something weird with the Japanese press pack

The screenshots included are at the unusual 384x230 resolution rather than 400x240. Unfortunately, due to JPEG compression I can't pixel count them to see if they've been resized or not.

It makes me wonder if this was an error on the part of their PR, or perhaps it's going to run at a slightly lower resolution for a slight increase in performance.

Also, for what it's worth, Mega Evolutions aren't going anywhere. They don't need to add new ones to keep them. Removing them would be an incredibly odd decision. They're essentially new forms of Pokémon which, to The Pokémon Company, are new Pokémon in themselves. They wouldn't remove new Pokémon.

Not sure if I should be like "sub 240p lul" or just be happy they're addressing the performance issues. Though I feel the framerate is really bad I still think looking good (as good as it can look on a 3DS) is more important for a turn based game.

Surprised at the latent Sun and Moon hate. I thought it was a refreshing campaign. Weak post game, though.

SuMo appears to be the most love it or hate it Pokémon game. I, personally, loved the campaign and the characters, but I hated the PokéDex. So even within the group that likes it, there's still dichotomy.

It's still my favorite since Platinum, though.

Shofu knows nothing. Outside what everyone can know.

Switch game is coming.

Its most likely not a port of this game.

"It's time to *Switch* over to your Nintendo 3DS to enjoy the all-new, next chapter in the beloved Pokemon series"

I wouldn't put it past Reggie to say this when he's inevitablely asked about a Switch port at E3. Dude is the master of hilariously on-brand / synergistic pivots that reeeeeach.

Sun and Moon were great, a vast improvement over X and Y. I'd go as far as to say the best Gen openers since Gen III.

Some best characters too. Lilly was great.

Trying to play XY after SuMo is like a baseball bat to the face.

I don't understand how anybody can complain about Hau and Lillie, two of the stronger characters Pokémon has delivered, after the inane entourage in XY. I hate those friends. They are so stupid.

Yeah, Lillie is terrific. I love the fact that SuMo actually has character arcs. It's like somebody finally took College Writing 101 at Game Freak and realized characters are supposed to do more than just "be there."

I say that snidely but I really mean it. It makes a huge difference to the game.

That would be such a Don Matrrick 'we have a product for people that...' moment. Legendary E3 stuff.

Do we have any idea how different the story will be?

Maturity, bitches.
X&Y wasn't a great experience and was the point where I wondered if Pokémon games just weren't my cup of tea anymore. So much so I didn't get Sun or Moon day one, a first for a Pokémon game. I got it later for a Christmas present and what I found was a refreshing experience.

I only really play for the story though, so anything about training and levelling doesn't really have an affect on me.

Su/Mo had a greater emphasis on story and characters than before. That's probably why it's polarizing. The series has spent 20 years teaching people that Pokemon is all about catching, training, trading, and battling Pokemon. Skip the flavour text, it's not really important anyway. It's still about that, but now there's an adventure and cool friends and shit, gawdamn.

I'll skip Ultra Su/Mo though. Not that I'm done with 3DS. I'm still buying games for it and am excited about Atlus's announcements yesterday. I'm just done with Pokemon on 3DS. Whether this is a 3rd(&4th) version or a sequel, I don't need it. I didn't need BW2 either. The next Pokemon game I buy will be on Switch.

E3 surprise maybe. Nintendo and the Pokemon company are unpredictable. Anything is possible.

Willing to eat crow, but ... its too early. Better cash in with Ultra and than announce a Switch game when you can actually show something off.

Greater emphasis than Black and White? Idk about that since Gen V was what started focusing on story and character development, and if I'm being honest, it did a much better job that SuMo did.

It's a Pokémon game. The story was never going to rise above trite cliché. Lillie being moderately less bad than XY's entourage still doesn't lift her out of the realms of being shite; and there's way more dialogue with her than I ever wanted.

Fundamentally, all I ever wanted from a Pokémon game was to explore the world with my monster friends. The more dialogue there is, the less interest I have. I feel like Pokémon is currently stuck in the Skyward Sword phase of just too much tradition and just too many layers built up over the generations. It needs the weight loss and streamlining of a BotW title.

I genuinely like Lillie and Hau.

I'm a jaded and cynical wannabe who finds little joy in the wonders of life.

But I love Lillie and Hau. They are both well-characterized, they both have fully developed arcs, and I (by some incalculable miracle) do not find them annoying. I find them charming.

Remember Tierno from XY? Got, I hate Tierno. "It's okay that I'm a bad Pokemon trainer because I like to dance" is not a character. What an impotent goon. He is a harasser. My disdain for him is like a toothed worm that ever wriggles in the flesh of my brain. I'm often able to ignore it - long numb to its presence - but when it bites, the effects are extraordinary.

Some say I'm being dramatic. I say, "get out of my brain, Tierno."

Hau's snarky remarks and interactions with Gladion amused me greatly. Hoping those two get more screen time together.

Probably the laziest names for third versions, would've preferred Lunar Eclipse / Solar Eclipse, I think the appearance of Solgaleo and Lunala communicate that well.

Well if you guys like to double down on disappointment...

My entire life consists of doubling down on disappointment.

On a serious note, I'm really curious to see more about the Ultra games! I wonder if the "follow" Pokemon will be in this version. I feel like seeing that would help prove definitively (to crazy people like me) that Switch won't get a version of Sun/Moon. We've been under the impression that 3DS can't handle that.

what was Haus fully developed arc? what makes him well characterized?

Hau is characterized by his optimism in the face of difficulties and challenges. He is humble and greets every new face as a friend regardless of how they treat him. Although tropey, his love for simple things like desserts depicts him as a young man with simple, grounded pleasures. He is self-actualized and comfortable as himself, and this shows in his moderate aspirations. Although it seems clear to others he will follow in the footsteps of grandfather Hala, he is content to take his journey at the pace that suits him.

Hau's arc is that he continually has his positivity challenged until he is met with something that genuinely makes him sad: Lillie leaves Alola. While not explicit, there is implication he has a crush on Lillie that is not reciprocated. It is very difficult for him to say goodbye to her. For the first time, he shows sadness and can be seen moping on the pier.

This is Hau's defining character moment. We see him sad, we see him crying, and we see that Hau has feelings and emotions he does not always let out. With Lillie's departure fresh on his heart, he can either relish in his depression or he can continue staying positive and be excited for his friend. Hau stands up, wipes away his tears, and puts on a smile.

Hau's character is a construct of positive attitude. He is meant to illustrate that how you look at things affects how they affect you. Even when it is difficult to do so, Hau seeks optimism.

I first played SuMo in November 2016. You can probably imagine why a character like that would be comforting to an American like me.

You really missed out on a gem. Most content in a Pokemon game, top 3 campaigns and Pokemon World Tournament.

I know the chances of this are extremely slim, but shofu's vid makes me wonder if US/UM will introduce new pokemon

The only thing I would anticipate are new Alola Pokemon, but I would be cautious of even that. Most likely, the only new Pokemon will be variations of the legendaries.

I would love Alolan versions of Pokemon from other generations. Even just Generation II would make a big difference. It's kind of a bothersome coincidence that, in universe, only Pokemon from Kanto have adapted to Alola since it was settled even though the island was settled by Kanto and Johto people alike.

One of these days I'm actually going to go back to my copy of Black 2 and finish it. I honestly wonder how well it stands up nowadays. Until then, I must push forward on Moon.
