2017 Microsoft E3 Conference [Over]

What shirt should Phil Spencer wear today?

The guy is weak. He doesn't have the clout or charisma necessary to get the backing and funding the Xbox division is clearly in dire need of. Meanwhile he just spits out PR coated lies on Twitter on a regular basis.

It's looking more and more to me like MS leveraging Xbox to just promote their other products to a younger audience.

Xbox Play Anywhere makes no sense when you are way behind in the one market you have been able to break in to in the last 20 years. It does nothing but devalue the image of your brand.

Using Xbox games to show faux support for PC gaming in order to get people to upgrade to Windows 10 is typical MS. Not allowing the games on Steam causes backlash from the majority of the audience and creates more negativity for MS.
The amount of people buying games on the Windows Store is negligible.

Great show for games, not a great show for Microsoft. In terms of all of e3 history it was probably like a 7/10. We've had some real stinkers in the past.

As someone who doesn't have a 4K gaming computer but a 4k TV I'm looking forward to X. Already plan on trading in my S for the X. I'm disappointed that halo 5 isn't getting the 4k update.

Just started getting my Mixer Mixpot rewards. Saw a ton of shit in my queue downloading for all the Rare Replay titles and the Warthog for FH3.

And I thought it was a pretty good conference. Definitely picking up an X.

The Xbox BC made me consider picking up a Xbox One S. Hopefully Otogi support will come. My OG Xbox had weird disc reading issues that resulted in bad skipping in Crimson Skies and Otogi 2, so I never got to finish Otogi 2.

If Xbox One S hits 199.99 this christmas, then I'd consider it to pick up Rare Replay and Sunset Overdrive... not sure the console offers anything I can't find else where.

That was a good show. Question though, for all the "exclusive" games, they are all also coming to PC, correct?
And most of them will also come to PS4 and maybe even switch.. there use of the word exclusive in this conference, does not put a lot of trust in me for them.. do they really think people are that stupid, that they can't see through the meaning of "console launch exclusive"? Or are they really going all in on the mouth breather demographic?

I would not have come out of the conference with such a bad taste in my mouth, if they had just been more upfront about it.. but instead they just whent all the way with shady tactics.. they had this booming voice saying "exclusive" every time a new game was shown.. but if you actually read what was on screen you would know that it was a lie... someone have been reading the Trump business manual..

The YouTube/Keighley panel was not too thrilled with the conference. I believe the 4 panelists gave it: B-, C, C, C+.

Meanwhile, the IGN crew seemed quite positive about it. And they were gushing about Sea of Thieves...which I was not super into.

I'd give the conference a 6/10 personally. HUGE disappointment considering the stakes for Microsoft.

As usual, MS are all over the place...expensive console with no meaningful content. Typical.

One chance to excite gamers with games on a clearly exceptional piece of hardware. Is that so hard MS? Maybe the game creation got a back seat while they spent all their cash on Scorpio R&D....

I can't believe they spent 5 mins on the horrible looking state of decay demo and gave Crackdown 3 2 mins and no gameplay demo. Da fuck? Anthem looks awesome but it's not exclusive so I don't know what the point of closing their show with it was.

Some of the multiplatform stuff looked really great Metro, Anthem etc.

But man Crackdown looks bad! Bad as in looking last gen compared to the other stuff.

Full list of Mixer goodies (should be given to everyone by end of week)

Full games:
Rare Replay
No Time to Explain
Final Station

DLC:
Minecraft Redstone Specialists Pack
Halo Warthog car for Forza Horizon 3
Halo Wars 2 Kinsano Leader Pack, 3 Blitz Packs
HAWKEN Starter Pack

Nice nice

Did anyone see 343i? Thought they were supposed to be present in a small way...

This conference was pretty much my worst case scenario I predicted back at e3 2016: A bunch of meh games that, try as MS might, simply do not justify the purchase of a $500 double dip console to anyone who isn't already a hardcore Xbox fan.

On one hand, it's cool that they gave the spotlight to a lot of these smaller titles. On the other, I was really hoping to be surprised by first/second party announcements, and we didn't get much.

OG Xbox compat is great.

and many of the big third party games look great, but I'll just play those on my PC.

I really want to see a shift in focus from them. Giving us new and exciting first/second party experiences against the competition.

-Anthem looked incredible, MS needed an exclusive like that, (and they know it) it would have made everyone buy their console...

-Xbox one X, I might buy it, so many third party games at 4k hrd, imagine anthem... But I wish they had more games of their own to showcase

-Ori and The Will of The Wisps=Tears

-Sea of thieves= Had the best showing out of their exclusive open world games, with a great sense of fun adventure.

-Crackdown 3= looked very janky, not impressed

-State of decay 2= come on, there was barely anything new, i loved the first one, so here is still hoping they will deliver.

-Forza 7= Stunning racer, great content, great showcase, 4k graphics..

-OG backwards compatibility: MS cares for their consumeres, unlike another company..

Assasins Creed: Interested, Shadow of war: Interested

Ashen and black desert online interested me as well

I liked how they had so many games to show, trailer after trailer after trailer.
All the timed exclusives definitely makes the platform more attractive. Also good and great diversity of games.

As conferences go I'll give it a B-

It's just after One X it mainly felt like a third party showreel and not a MS one thanks to the anemic 1st party line up on offer. Like 90% must have been multiplatform in one way or another. Great pace and content, just massively lacking true exclusives. Which is what they majorly need. But it's not happening for at least another year.

And after Spencer's promising trip to Japan, he brought back Code Vein and DBZ? Do they have marketing for it? As in still trying to chase the Souls/anime market despite them mostly being on PS4. Seems like a waste of marketing budget that could have gone to something else.

He seemed like he was trying hard to show off a diverse lineup. The most diverse in the history on Xbox conferences apparently but in the end it just felt like a multiplatform show that I can play anywhere. But still a good presser overall for delivery outside the One X reveal and Forza. And that price.

Moon Studios is Microsoft's most talented studio by a wide mile. Those fucking guys understand what makes a video game unique and special. Microsoft basically needs a AAA version of Moon, a team that can constantly tinker with great game design like Sony and Nintendo's first parties. But seriously kudos to the devs at Moon.

Microsofts fight is no longer about having the biggest and best exclusives.

It's about having an ecosystem they can keep people inside.

Xbox BC and Game Pass is about that. Also, if you look for the details in this keynote, they were pushing the Windows/Xbox Stores more than ever before.

What's actually going with Microsoft for them to be struggling this much to put out first party IPs?

Sony gets criticised for perhaps a few premature announcements, fair enough, but at least I know the games are coming, I know they have enough first party studios and partners working on games that are releasing at a steady pace, thereby justifying my PS4 Pro purchase.

Now, I know that just because Microsoft is a massive company that they won't necessarily give the division a blank cheque to fund games, but the past few conferences have me questioning how much they are willing to fund. From what I understand, Xbox struggled to be profitable for some years, but I thought that was in the past. So why is Microsoft so lacking in their first party output, and why is it that they continue to insist on maintaining such a small number of first party studios?

Anthem looks intriguing, needs to be GOAT to make up for the death of Mass Effect.

Crackdown 3 concerned me greatly. Trailer looked meh and no live gameplay demo for a game that should have been a bigger part of their show.

Sea of Thieves continues to look great.

Forza is Forza

Ori 2 is exciting considering Ori is my 2nd favorite game this gen.

State of Decay 2 looked like what I expected.

Shouldnt have let all those rumors build my hype, this conference was a big letdown for me.

More likely to finally invest in a ps4 or switch this fall than upgrade to a xbox one x as of now.

I am going to give this conference an A. 9/10.

Xbox One X is an incredible device. It looks amazing and somehow is the smallest Xbox yet. The Surface team know how to make high end designs.

$499 is stupid and you know Phil wanted nothing to do with it as he very quickly said the price and didn't even show it on the big screen. To me, this is about profits and X should have a sweet profit margin compared to the S. I can see X selling slightly better than the Pro did in the US this holiday thanks to more marketing so the revenue/profit will be huge, but January on the console is going to suffer. MS have probably set it up so that if they really need to drop the price, whether it be because of needing supply to move or to just energize the market around a software launch, they can drop it to $449 or bundle in a game like Crackdown 3 or Forza 7. If it were $399 or even $449 with a game bundled I would give the X an easy 10/10, but price brings it down.

Most of the games were great. The amount of third party announcements was exciting and completely surprised me. Metro, DBZ, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, The Last Night, Black Desert, and more were amazing. Getting dates for Cuphead, Ashen, and Tacoma was nice as well.

First party was decent. Forza was Forza, Crackdown looked like Crackdown, and a complete lack of Halo was surprising, but Sea of Thieves, Ori, and State of Decay 2 looked great. The Minecraft section was probably the best it could ever be.

That conference had me anticipating every new announcement after Metro and I was not disappointed with anything I saw.

The pacing between each game was also very fast. Barley any talking, and just enough time between each trailer for audience applause... except for every time Phil came on. Like really, it wasn't necessary for him to come out and announce the next few games would be Japanese, or talk about indies. Let them happening naturally as they are surprises. Let Battlegrounds play with no introduction, let DBZ play and surprise everyone, no need for Phil.

Also best announcement of the whole show, Xbox BC announced. That was fantastic.

They really improved the presentation this year and the announcements were all good. I actually have a lot to look forward to in early 2018! Xbox One X was never going to be a day 1 purchase for me but it looks like I'm waiting even longer for that.

7/10.

They showed a lot of games, but considering they are trying to sell me a $499 console, the lack of actual exclusive games (especially first party wise) was a huge deal breaker. Also, I am not against indies, but it felt like half of the games they were showing were indies and low-mid budget games. Why would a buy a top-hardware console to play these games? The only game that actually felt like "wow, this is the monster upgrade they keep talking about" was Anthem. But that shit is (if we are lucky) a Q4 2018 game. And it is multiplatform. And by that time PS5 rumours will be everywhere.

I think Xbox One X is not going to turn the wheel as Microsoft hoped it would. I am not seeing any market for it right now tbh. Especially at $499.

It wasn't a bad conference at all IMO. It had a lot of games, some really interesting indie ones, and exciting ones like Anthem, but it failed to convince me that I need to buy an Xbox One or an Xbox One X to play them.

Meanwhile, the IGN crew seemed quite positive about it. And they were gushing about Sea of Thieves...which I was not super into.

EZA is also particularly positive about Sea of Thieves in particular, even though I don't see the extensive hype either. Then again I'm more of a single-player gamer admittedly.

Also didn't Phil Spencer say he is done with 3rd party times exclusives lol. I guess he just meant he is done with the word timed exclusive and replaced it with console launch exclusive
