Spider-Man E3 2017 Gameplay - PS4 - 2018

Can't say I was too impressed with the gameplay. I like the seamless transitions from cinematics to gameplay, but it all felt like an elaborate game of simon-says. It was suffocating in button prompts.

Combat and stealth look like Arkham rotoscoped. Traversal looks really good, expanding on the already strong traversal mechanics of Sunset Overdrive (the wall run animation looks identical) with web swinging and grappling. I really want to see some free roam gameplay, I really just want to be able to swing around New York and stop petty crimes.

Wait that's what the teaser meant ?

Spiderman is miles ?

Well that's awesome, because that means I can skip this game then. The QTE fest already put me down but if this isn't Peter I can cross it off instantly :D .

No one can say it's Miles Morales based off him showing up for 3 seconds at the end filming the scene...

I don't disagree, but I wouldn't say these QTEs are done right. Manually swinging through a city chasing down a helicopter is much more exciting than calmly pressing a designated button once every five seconds while a cutscene plays.

You do manually swing through the city to chase it down though.

And the swinging is all physics based with webs that attach to buildings :)

This looks phenomenal. And at this point it looks like people don't know what they want to complain about. Of course it will show scripted events, it's a demo

I am more interested in the moment to moment gameplay, and if the world is constructed as well as an Arkham game for example. But that doesn't really translate to demos

There's a difference between being scripted for a demo and being scripted as part of a game. Last of Us 2012's demo for example of course was rehearsed, but when you get the game into your hands it still offers a unique experience. Probably not going to the case here in some of those sequences.

nobody has said spiderman is miles yet. He might just be in this game universe as another character.

but if he is miles awesome, I'd be fine with not playing as Peter.

You do manually swing after the city to chase it down though.

And the swinging is all physics based with webs that attach to buildings :)

Can we hope for an interview or more gameplay in the near future to showcase/discuss the free roaming side? Would probably dissuade fears and hype up the game.

"We will be playing the demo LIVE on the show floor all week. It's actually a bit longer with more combat."

"Plus our demoers all have their own ways of traversing the city, they can catch the helicopter really fast hah. Gotta hold back :)"

How can this be game of the show? Game of the show was obviously God of War, it's not even close

Also are and cutscenes basically same shit

He calls himself Pete while he's trying to stop the back of the helicopter

Rewatch it and listen to the audio closely. :)

I admit, if there's a switcheroo with Miles and they kill of Pete, I'll be a bit peeved. I've wanted a really good Peter Parker simulator for so long.
Goods times. Great times.
The moment I found out about "What If?" mode over 10 years later was pretty mind blowing.

I hated fighting Sandman in the second game.

New Spidey clearly isn't getting speed from his swinging but I suppose they nerfed that so he wouldn't overshoot the chopper

Also IIRC Classic Spidey has his stats maxed, so it's not really reflective of standard play. Considering that, I still prefer it.

Yup thought both looked amazing. I hope there aren't too many QTEs in Spider-Man. I could just swing around in that city for hours.

I'm wondering if they are using photogrammetry tech, the texture work looked fantastic.

I think the QTE's will be kept to a minimum. I think they wanted to show a spectacular set piece, which usually end up with a substantial amount of QTE.

in spiderman 2 you could press a button to fucking do jet boost with no physics whatsoever, making you fly like a god damn canon.

Like I get people want to zoom past half of the city as spiderman, but sticking with more physics based swinging where he isn't going to speed up in mid air for no reason is fine.

It's not like there's no magic thrust being applied here either. It wouldn't hurt to crank it up a little to make things faster.

I just wonder if you're supposed to time the presses to the circles syncing up, because I've been conditioned to hit those prompts as soon as they pop up, so if hitting the prompts too early fails you, that might be stupid and annoying.

Anyway, this looked alright.

Oh yeah the man himself is here.

Keep grounding those doubters :p

Not actually that important
I'm glad you guys liked the showing, to me unfortunately it looked like Arkham with a Spidey skin + QTEs a go-go.
Where the heck was the focus on the swinging. Why didn't they make it more organic, and let you use momentum to enter an area/arena and wreck the enemies?
Looked so scripted and linear, devoid of the freedom you'd (I'd?) want from a Spider-Man game, almost robotic... very lackluster for me, disappointed but still hopeful.
I'm obviously judging it just from what has been showed so far, of course I'll keep my mind open in any future showings/final release. Too bad it didn't go in a new and original (and thus, imo, more exciting) direction instead of working with Rocksteady's blueprint.

There was a lot I liked in Overdrive and SM has the same game director I believe?

Graphically speaking SM looked awesome, the lighting and shader materials were top-notch although I did seem to notice quite a downgrade-y transition from in-engine QTEs/transitions to proper gameplay.

Still good luck to Insomniac, wish those guys all the best and to hopefully make me change my mind when the game's out in the wild.

Well, that's the problem. You have to push the boundaries and do what's never been done before. That's how games progress forward. QTE just feel like a cheap bandage to the problem. Maybe it would help to just get rid of the prompt and have something else like a movement that signals you should act? Shoving a button prompt on screen feels very cheap.

making games aren't simply thinking something and doing it.

giving players freedom in some of these moments can prove tricky or extremely difficult to do.

there isn't a game out there that can pull of some of the shit done in this demo without QTEs. If there is feel free to post it.

It looks great, and while I understand the concerns of too many QTE's, there's literally no other way to make set pieces in Spider-Man games without making them insanely complex.

My only concern was the movement. A lot of it reminded me of Beenox rather than Sunset Overdrive. Don't screw this up Insomniac.

Best wishes.

Is this all combat in spider suit? It looked okay but nothing mind blowing. Seems like the safest way to do a Spider Man game.

The Miles tease was weird and I have no idea how it's supposed to fit.

From Insomniac's site:
This is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City. At the same time, he’s struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of millions of New Yorkers rest upon his shoulders.
Not sure what role Miles will play, but from this it looks like the Spider-Man we've been seeing so far is Peter.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

You are assuming a lot from that demo.

I felt Enter Electro was pretty lame in comparison to the first game. Could never put my finger on why, just felt off to my childish self.

The first game had MONSTER OCK, motherfucker!

You were slow as shit when you first started off in the PS2 version, hopefully their are swing upgrades like that one and a greater sense of speed is achieved.
They usually use the God mode in these trailers to show the game at its best. So I really doubt that this wasn't an upgraded version of his swing.

To all of those complaining about the speed of Spider-Man's swing compared to Spider-Man 2, it's very possible that one of the upgrades Spider-Man can get in the new game are speed increases, along with tricks unlocks while swinging/combat upgrades/etc. It was a thing in Spider-Man 2, and I'm sure it'll be the same thing here. Just look at Insomniac's other "superhero" game series (inFamous). Lots of upgrades to go through, that enable you to move faster/traverse things easier/etc.

I'm an idiot, confused them with Sucker Punch. I still believe in Insomniac!

I trust Insomniac, that they will release an amazing (pun intended) Spider-Man game. Everything I've seen so far, especially this E3 demonstration, only solidifies that belief.

....I'm not a game dev or a creative person in general. I'm just a consumer and I can tell you that pressing QTEs is just not fun for me and many others. Like I said, replacing the button prompts with other cues would help. Button prompts just look cheap and lazy as hell.

There will be a time when the QTE problem is replaced with something better. It just sucks that this game might not be doing that because Spider-Man has tons of potential as a video game.
